 I really would love to ski these in some fresh snow and just see how they fare there, because I think they would be really fun for more of a big mountain environment given that they're nice and stiff underfoot, but light in the tip so you can float. So I definitely would not ski this if you are a beginner skier. If you like a ski that's quick edge to edge, this is not going to be your best bet. If you like to take sort of longer, lazier GS turns kind of down the hill, these are going to be a good option for you

 All in all, these felt really good once you had them engaged and in the turn. They do take some work to get from edge to edge, but again, once you engage in the turn, they're really happy to just keep on carving for a long time. It's definitely a lot of work to get them to do shorter radius turns, so just keep that in mind. But yeah, they felt really stable once I had them on edge

 If you like a ski that's quick edge to edge, this is not going to be your best bet. If you like to take sort of longer, lazier GS turns kind of down the hill, these are going to be a good option for you. If you want something that's going to be fairly versatile in a higher snow area like Colorado, Utah, Pacific Northwest, these are going to be a good option. I don't think that these are going to be great in the east and on ice in general, just given that the tips are so soft and floppy

 It's definitely a lot of work to get them to do shorter radius turns, so just keep that in mind. But yeah, they felt really stable once I had them on edge. They're not the most playful ski. They're not really a freeride ski in my opinion

I definitely agree with much of what you said, I think the Dynastar M-Free 99/108 needs to be mentioned when looking for skis better than the BC100's, they're better in every way imo

It's not in my nature to single out a target for criticism, but I just can't help myself given the unwarranted popularity of this, in my opinion, highly mediocre ski. So here's my screed - with a caveat or two. Feel free to reference this post the next time some comes asking "Should I get a BC100?"

The BC100 is unusually light for its size: at 1700g for a 180cm ski, it would easily qualify as a touring ski. The ski's shape is fairly similar to the original BC, a 120mm waisted ski that is fantastic in powder. Sounds good right? Here's the problem: at that weight and shape, the BC100 is absolute garbage on firm snow. It edges as poorly as anything I've skied. I have a full rocker Chipotle Banana that is better on ice. Light skis fare much worse in 3D snow - especially if you ski marine snow pack. Dense snow + light ski = more deflection. The experience of dropping in on a BC100, for me, was almost like putting on snow blades. The tips chattered all over the place. I strained to engage the edges. Turning felt more like a loosely-controlled drift than a carve. The faster you go, the worse this ski gets. 

Atomic sells this ski as a "one ski quiver" offering, and in part, this category of skis is victim to the inherent compromises that ski designers have to make. That being said, there are a bunch of skis that excel over the BC100 in virtually all categories: turn initiation, stability at speed, edging, float, etc. etc.

If you're thinking BC100 for an all-mountain \~100+mm OSQ, and my comments register with you, here are some other options to consider:

* Nordica Enforcer 104 - for better carving, lots of fun, adequate float for virtually anything except Japow or AK
* Blizzard Rustler 10 - more rocker than the Enforcer 104, extremely solid underfoot. Does not launch you from one turn to the next, but still a joy to carve.
* Salomon QST 99 or 106 - my most intermediate-friendly recommendation, for accessible, fun, easy balance and still plenty of power
* Armada ARV 106 - for a more a freeride-oriented / playful style, but enough oomph to stick your drops
* Moments, 4FRNTs, ON3Ps, J Skis, Sego for you indie heads
* Literally any other ski (ok that's an exaggeration)

I'll caveat my critique with a concession. If you primarily ski park, and take that level of playfulness to the mountain, the BC100 is probably one of your best choices. If you are a terminal intermediate - you don't carve and you don't wish to progress - the lack of edge hold will feel really forgiving and "easy." This forgiving quality may help some folks feel more confident in bumps and tight spots. I'll also admit that this year's top sheet is beautiful, so I expect this ski will sell well again. And I'll keep my grumpy comments to myself on the slopes: skiing is fun, and I would hate to take the shine off of somebody else's fun. I just hate seeing folks put their leafy green folding dollars - especially at full retail - into a ski that made me a worse skier.

The BC100 is a noodle-y park ski that sucks on ice

 So pretty interesting. You know I think a lot of skis and a lot of manufacturers are kind of doing the opposite by trying to build more torsional stiffness into the forebody of the ski and then a looser tail and these kind of have the opposite concept going on. And I said that carries over to its shape and it really does. So up here in the tip of the ski we get all that rocker

 Now it's not the easiest in softer snow conditions or off piece technical terrain but it certainly can do it. This tip shape again really helps a lot. Any forgiveness that this ski has, any kind of ease of use in situations like that is coming from this tip shape. It really lets you kind of steer the ski where you want to go without it feeling catchy and too aggressive in how it's kind of turning through technical terrain

 So if you want easier edge release that kind of surfy feel you might be better off in the M free line but those skis can't really touch the overall power of the M Pro. So it's a real skier ski. This is a real deal ski here. You have to kind of give it that input

 So not that it really changes how you're controlling your skis but it certainly adds a very very strong finish to a carve in particular. So say you're skiing pretty fast, you're laying over some big arcs, that tail just has a ton of stability to it and this is really a ski that you can trust at high speeds under a powerful aggressive skier. Now it's not the easiest in softer snow conditions or off piece technical terrain but it certainly can do it. This tip shape again really helps a lot

I've been skiing Dynastar Cham 97's for the last several years. I love them, but they're getting close to the end of their life. It looks like Dynastar discontinued them though.

From what I've read, the Dynastar Legend X 96 is probably the closest ski Dynastar currently makes, but it is a bit different.

Does anyone have any thoughts/experience on the Legend X skis?

Otherwise, what would be a suitable ski similar to the Dynastar Cham? I could do with something a bit lighter than the Chams, but otherwise love how they ski.

Ski similar to Dynastar Cham

 They fit right into that category of the vocal blaze that we were just trying and the Armada Declivity. Very, very similar skis in terms of their niche. One of these lighter, woodcore-y skis, not a lot of metal. But of the three, I say the Deon Star is absolutely handling the harder, icier snow better

 This is even more toned down. So we're evolving here towards more traditional geometry. And I think that's kind of the story you're seeing across the brands. As things continue, not as much funky, weird looking skis on the market today

 One of these lighter, woodcore-y skis, not a lot of metal. But of the three, I say the Deon Star is absolutely handling the harder, icier snow better. This ski doesn't feel nearly as intimidated or as skittish on the steeper, icier snow. So it's making me feel more confident and I like that a lot

 And so this M Pro 99 feels to me a lot like home, very reminiscent of that same feel. Ski likes to be kind of upright, likes knee angulation, and has a really nice little sort of tip to tail action. If you're that kind of skier where you like to get on your tips and then dive forward and finish the turn a little bit back, this ski really likes to make those kinds of turns. So for me, it's just fun, fun, fun

I've been skiing Black Crow Camoxs (182cm) for 3-seasons and I really like them, but I tried out my friends Volkl Mantras (M5, 177cm) at Mammoth this past weekend and their edge hold on icy hard pack, stability at high speed, and confidence on bumps took me by surprise — it made me feel like my skis have been holding me back (and I thought they were great). The M5s are certainly heavier than the Camox, but that only bothered me sitting on the lift, because while skiing they felt just as responsive and quick in the trees and on bumps as the Camoxs. 

Am I responding to the stiffness of the ski, or are there other features driving the performance difference I should be aware of? I've progressed from advanced-intermediate to squarely advanced on the Camox and I am curious what other all-mountain / freeriding skis I should look into for next season (and demo soon). 50% on-piste 50% off-piste skiing in the West (CA, CO, UT).

Volkl Mantras and similar skis

 So it holds the carve pretty well, but I'd say there's just enough tip rocker to release when you need it to. The speed felt really good. I was concerned about that because they took some of the metal out of the tip and they made it a little less stiff than maybe you're used to on the legend. But it felt very good, very stable, little bit of tip chatter, but nothing to write home about

 But I also do a lot of backcountry touring and that kind of stuff. And this blends the line perfectly for me. This was perfect on the groomers. It had just the right amount of edge hold to make me happy

 I'm not sponsored by any brand at all. Everything I say is just my unbiased thoughts about what I felt when I was on the slopes. So I was talking with the reps and this ski replaces the legend line. They said that this was supposed to be a little bit more forgiving, a little bit more fun, less demanding

 But when I got them in the bumps and in the trees, I could swing them around. It had very easy turn initiation. So this ski has a good amount of camber underfoot, which I'm happy about. It provides a lot of power in the turn, but also has that early rise rocker

I'm a bit confused by the opposing viewpoints. Do wider (like over 100) perform better when it's soft or just give the sticky stuff more to grab? Let's assume waxing is sort of equal. Does the width help float with mush?

The other view I heard is that a bit narrower (80s) will cut through and give a good ride.

<div class="md"><p>I&#39;m a bit confused by the opposing viewpoints. Do wider (like over 100) perform better when it&#39;s soft or just give the sticky stuff more to grab? Let&#39;s assume waxing is sort of equal. Does the width help float with mush?</p>

<p>The other view I heard is that a bit narrower (80s) will cut through and give a good ride.</p>

 They also wrap that poplar wood core in fiberglass, so it does make that central portion more snappy and energetic than without that fiberglass. On top of the ski they have their rocket frame tight mill layer. So if you can see this raised section here starting thin towards the shovel, expanding out full width to the edge and then tapering in just a little bit before it tapers back out to the tail, ending here. So we have this partial metal laminate, this shaped metal and what that does first and foremost puts a bulk of that edge to edge underfoot, increasing the torsional stiffness, carving ability of the ski, damping the front of the ski so it won't really vibrate a whole lot and then putting a bunch of business on the back end of the ski here

 Welcome to our 2022 ski test. We got a Dynastar M-Pro 99 for you. This ski is unchanged from last year and just was a really, really impressive ski when it came out last season and looking forward to it doing another year of the same thing. Construction wise, this ski has their hybrid poplar wood core, so very interesting and unique way that Dynastar is doing this

 They have a poplar wood core that runs through the central portion of the ski and then on the outsides they have a polyurethane or a PU material, which is not dissimilar from the plastic found in a 120 flex alpine ski boot. So a little bit different of a material than we normally see from a full wood core. This hybrid wood core definitely leans on that polyurethane material to give the ski its smoothness, makes it very quiet, very predictable and intuitive. Pretty impressive use of that material

The shop didn't have everything I wanted to try, but they also had stuff I didn't have on my list, namely the Dynastar M-Pro 99, which is what I ended up loving the most, with the Black Ops Sender second. Had I only stuck to my list, I would never have found these. So while I was bummed the shop didn't carry any Blizzard skis, it all worked out.

5’10 180 pound male looking to get his first pair of planks. I ski on average maybe 10 days a season and have just started doing black runs, but I wouldn’t say I can do them comfortably. There is so much information and knowledge to take in, it is a bit overwhelming. Any advice or recommendations on what to buy would be great!
