Disclaimer: I don't have first hand experience with what im about to recommend, but I've heard lots of reports that make me say this...If you want bells and whistles, good audio performance in your budget, your best option by far is the Denon dp-47f. It's a vintage table that can be had for around 500-600 usd.

Gift for boyfriend

I agree with the other posters. Lacking that info though, Just off the cuff I would recommend looking on ebay at used turntables because you can get much more and better quality than new for the money. My personal pick is a Denon DP-45F (the one I have and love), DP-47F, or DP-35F. Automatic, and direct drive are the main features I like.

What should I get?

My personal choice is any of the Denons. DP-35f, DP-45f, DP-47f, etc. Equally good are Technics SL-Q3, or 1200, and frankly most others you will find when you search for those. If you find one in complete, good working order you’re getting $1200 or $1500 worth of technology, style, and features for $350 to $500.

finally completed my setup (Denon avr-3803 and dp-37f)

Great table! I love my Denon table and it's a cheaper DP-23F. I was negotiating with someone locally on a DP-47F but turns out it had some Auto Start and Return issues and I didn't want to chance it with the Servo arm and electronic VTF and anti skate. I've finally come to terms with settling only for one if I manage to find a super deal.

Looking for an upgrade recommendation

Denon DP 35F, 45F, 47F,. . There are others as well but this is a good starter list, some are quite rare though. Unless you desire a belt drive I would go with direct drive, you get very accurate speed and generally quieter operation, basically reduced rumble as well as wow and flutter.
