 I am 5'10" and wear a 32" waist. I have to wear these very low on the waist in order to sit comfortably, to prevent a death grip on my crotch. I would return them but Dickies are the only high-rise shorts I know, but those are thick and not suited for warm weather.  The description says the cargo pockets fold out and are 3D, but there is only pleating on the bottom

This review is for the big people who are not full-time outdoor hipsters.  I've been doing more outdoor activities over the past year and have been learning about all the happening fabrics and "light this, light that" that seems to be part and parcel of the outdoor enthusiasts world. A few outings in thick cotton shirts and shorts (that never dry from sweat) motivated me to try these shorts.  First the good

 Also before the day is over, your crotch area will feel, eh, yucky, compared to jeans or other cotton. Again, not big issues - just be prepared if you perspire easily. Good for outdoors use - kinda "matty"where they don't need to be.

 They are comfortable while standing, but they get too tight when I sit down.  The right cargo pocket has two design flaws. First, it's rotated around so far to the right that you end up sitting on whatever is in it. Second, it's got this oddly placed single Velcro closure; it's only on the left side of the pocket flap and doesn't keep it shut

  Having said all that, these are still the best cargo shorts I've found. I had gotten some other cargo shorts from Duluth Trading that I liked a couple years ago, but they changed the design and the color choices so now they don't come in black, really show sweat badly, and aren't really quick drying. The original design of those shorts was better than their new one, but these Columbia shorts are much lighter and quicker drying (and cost less).  I have looked around at a bunch of other shorts and can't find any better than these Columbia shorts

 The very first time I wore these, the rear pocket stitches, both rows of them on both pockets, broke. When this happens, you have big holes on the edges of the pockets rendering them useless. As mentioned, this was the very first time I wore them.  I believe the problem is that the fabric has some stretch to it, but the thread does not and is very weak

Great fabric ruined by terrible construction.

 Better to keep your wallet, etc. in your front pockets or the single zippered one. That being said the fit is as expected and they look great.

 Extremely lightweight. My only complaint is the flimsy Velcro closures on the pockets. Curious since the rest of the garment is a quality build. They offer exactly zero security and will come undone at the slightest friction
