The ChefSofi 6-Inch kept coming up in our research, so we knew we had to give it a shot. However, this mortar and pestle set even exceeded our expectations. With a beautiful unpolished granite basin with a two-cup capacity and a heavy-duty pestle with a wide bottom, this set was excellent at crushing and grinding anything we threw at it, from peppercorns to avocados. The textured granite makes for great friction when it comes to grinding, and the wide bottoms create a lot of surface area between the granite and whatever you're crushing. This set has a slightly longer pestle, which is excellent for making sure your hand never collides with the bowl. This set was also a great mid-range size, making it extremely versatile and practical, and the thick granite is very unlikely to break. 
The thick, widening shape of the pestle was not the most ergonomic we tried, and the pestle also had no sort of polish, which made it feel less comfortable in hand. Granite sets generally require a bit more maintenance &mdash; they need to be pre-seasoned and washed without soap, which can be a bit tough, as things can get stuck in the ridges. However, if you don't mind a touch more work for a higher level of quality, this set is an amazing all-around option for all your crushing and grinding needs. 

The ChefSofi Mortar and Pestle Set is a great all-purpose grinder for its simple, durable design, versatility, and ease of use. We ground all our spices, including tough cinnamon sticks and cloves. Its simple design is made of strong and heavy unpolished granite, allowing users to crush ingredients into the desired consistency. It's also easy to clean and care for. It doesn't grind quite as fast or fine as our best electric grinder &#40;most spices took between one and two minutes to grind&#41;, but it was competitive in all categories and created fine enough powders to include in most home cooks' recipes. The versatility of this set was attractive to us; it ground spices &#40;including cloves that cannot be ground in many electric grinders or grinders with plastic components&#41;, herbs, garlic cloves, and other wet ingredients. It also crushes nuts and grinds small quantities of seeds. We just rinsed this out with warm water and let air dry after we were finished, setting it on our counter as an attractive appliance until we needed it again.
Though we found this to be a great kitchen tool for grinding spices, it can be a little high maintenance at first. It requires users to season it to ensure no granite dust remains once you start using it for your cooking needs. Before you use the mortar and pestle for the first time, you should grind small handfuls of white rice several times until rice grinds white &#40;our rice stayed white the entire time, but we still ground three handfuls of rice, as per the instructions&#41;. After grinding the rice, the instructions give you a recipe of garlic cloves, cumin, salt, and pepper to grind in your new mortar to season it. After all this work, it is ready to be rinsed, dried, and used! This set is certainly an investment when you can get an electric grinder for half the price, but it is a long-lasting, durable and versatile tool for the home cook that likes to keep it traditional.

 I contacted the seller chef sophie via email on a sunday evening asking if i could obtain a pestle that matched better got a reply within an hour and at 3am the next morning. Another entire set was shipped out to me free of charge, excellent customer service brian. At chef, sophie will take care of you upgraded to 5 stars previous review, heavy beautifully, polished and very functional. I received this as a gift and it is lovely, but you need to know that this does not come as a matched set

 The pictured product is a matching set awesome product. My first ever mortar and pestle set. I absolutely love this thing previously. I had bought a similar one but made with metal, maybe aluminum

 It was awful ingredient slipped and did not mash things too well. This one is very sturdy. Ingredients do not slip and i can't crush spices to garlic. I don't use the quesad anymore, because this product is so much easier to clean

Well, specifically, i bought this to grind coriander and cumin seeds, garlic and zinger in a daily basis for cooking curry, because i, like the taste of fresh homemade spices instead of packaged powders. Also making tomato pickles is so easy and tasty, and this mortar and pestle. It is so bulky and durable also carved very smoothly. I am very happy with this small addition to my kitchen and bringing a genuine taste to the food highly recommended and a perfect gift for who is fond of cooking update

ChefSofi's Brand New EXTRA Large Mortar and Pestle set

It took a very long time to season it (I think it's called). Tried rice, which didn't work very well, but using water worked great. Once it was ready to use, it was great! Giving 4 stars instead of 5, because this is my first experience with a mortar & pestle, and don't have any frame of reference.

He told me that there was no need for me to return the broken bowl and that he would be overnighting a replacement (which I got first thing the next morning).  However, this popped up on Prime day and I could NOT pass it up any longer- NO MORE EXCUSES to upsize and upgrade. This particular one came with instructions (which were preceded by a detailed email with the same information) on cleaning and seasoning prior to first use. My first mortar and pestle was marble and did I don't recall any special prep. My now 12 year old daughter enjoyed doing the "seasoning"(she loves to help), and it was a great opportunity to further nurture her love of creating new meal ideas
