You’re better off getting a used A4 laser printer from the past 5-6 years + and a new A3 ink tank printer for your son. For the laser Ive found the Brother HL is decent and the WiFi connection to print docs from Mac and IPhone via AirPrint has been problem free for me.

Therefore, if is smarter to avoid the cheapest printer to avoid getting robbed blind on per page costs. For example, the Brother HL-L8360CDW costs $698 and the consumables are $178/9000pg (black) and $298x3 / 9000pg (color).

I bought this for my office in May 2019. Worked really well, if really slow to print. Print quality is great. However, about 4 weeks ago, after warranty expired, while printing on regular paper, there was this grinding noise and it suddenly started leaving deep impressions down one side of the paper...

Brother HL-L8360CDW R1.59 (0.079GBP). I then threw the Epson L120 into the mix, currently in SA it's the cheapest Epson Ecotank, that worked out to R0.12/page (0.006GBP). I can't honestly say that laser is cheaper, it's definitely faster and more convenient for some jobs.

This printer disconnects from the network everytime it goes to sleep. You cannot re-connect without unplugging the printer and restarting. You cannot turn off the sleep mode so it disconnects multiple times during the day. Not very productive to restart the printer every 45 min.

It was so easy to connect to wifi and printed from any wireless devices. I was only print the most 20 pages since I bought it. I found out last month, it was no longer connected the the home wifi even though it said it is connected. No matter how many time i reseted it. Very disappointed ☹️

This printer will not duplex properly when you print wireless. Had the same problem with my old brother. Plug the printer in direct and it works fine.
