CR’s take: The retrofit August Smart Lock Pro offers a ton of smart features, including auto-locking and unlocking, voice control (via Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit/Siri, and Google Assistant), access logs, electronic keys, a door sensor (to tell if the door is closed, not just locked), and compatibility with Z-Wave Plus smart home hubs. The lock has remote access features, but you’ll need to buy it with the August Connect WiFi adapter, $79, to get those features as well as voice control. It earns an Excellent rating for convenience in our tests and is very easy to set up. If you’d like to use PINs with this lock, August sells a separate wireless keypad for $60.

CR’s take: The August Smart Lock Pro is one of only two locks in our ratings to earn an Excellent rating for Smart IQ because of its impressive array of features, including electronic keys, an access log, remote control, remote alerts, and voice control. But the remote features and voice control via Google Assistant require an August Connect WiFi adapter, $79, to connect the lock to the internet.  This lock is a retrofit product, meaning that it replaces only the part of the lock that’s on the interior side of your door. The exterior part of your deadbolt will remain on the door. This means you can still use your keys but also lock and unlock the door from your smartphone app. Because the August is a retrofit model, how well it withstands kick-ins or drilling depends on the deadbolt you have.  No workee. Mess with this for an hour, still no workee. At this point, you might ask why I chose the black skill instead of the Res skill. The answer is that the Red skill requires you to say "Alexa, ask August to lock the front door" and the black one allows you to say "Alexa, lock the front door

  It turns out the to LOCK to door, you must use the Red skill, since the lock function is not supported by the Black skill. So you cannot say "Alexa, unlock the front door." You must say "Alexa, ask August to unlock the front door." Oh yeah

  TLDR: The bluetooth lock functionality works fine. Everything else is half-baked at best.

After 30mins on the phone with August customer service verifying my purchase/lock serial number I got the lock factory reset and I was able to register it to my home. 2) Manually rotating lock feels as if there are some sand grains or a chipped gears inside, it’s not glide smooth as August Support said it should be

 I can park in my driveway, come to the porch and try to push the door to find out it's still locked. And then a few seconds later it often unlocks itself. I just have to wait. And sometimes it doesn't unlock itself or you need to wait a little longer

 We sometimes want to lock the door right away without it waiting for couple minutes to auto-lock it. And it often just couldn't connect to the lock from HomeKit so we sometimes drive away leaving our place open assuming it will auto lock in 2 minutes. We don't have August's bridge, but we do have AppleTV as home hub. And HomeKit usually can connect to our smart switches so in this situation leaving the house we can turn off all the lights, but lock usually can't connect

Great idea, not so great implementation

Typically use Yale but unfortunately they don't male a landlord friendly smart lock such as this, so I had to try this out, it works fairly well but does occasionally refuse to respond and so far has gone through 4x the ammount of batteries as a Yale lock installed at the same time and is used just as frequently. My yale lock is still on its first set of batteries so it's hard to say just how bad the battery life is, but it's already not even close. - 1 star for battery life and - 1 star for the occasional connection issue.  Update: 15 months later, i have discovered that this lock only has connection issues when paired directly to z wave if you pair it to its hub and then connect it over wifi it works extremely reliably and also gets slightly better battery life

Battery life is very low compared to Yale smart locks

So I have been using the August 3rd gen Smart Lock Pro for a bit over a month and I have to say I love it. It is exactly as expected and works with Bluetooth on my sons phone perfectly when he arrives from school. Here is the reason for the 3 stars instead of 5. Price and requirement to buy additional Connect bridge to work with my smart home

I have a Wink 2 hub and have all my lights and gadgets connecting to it just fine. With August, they require you to buy the Connect bridge device that sits between my Wink 2 hub and this lock

Works good after you understand you need the Connect Bridge to function in your smarthome.

Few months from using the lock, here are some pointers: - Easy install and battery replacing. - It needs more calibration times than battery change (and the device doesn't send a proper notification just a "stock" message) - Continue using manual key seems to reduce time cycle to calibrate lock (more key usage more calibrations needed on a period of time) - I purchased the model needing the remote access bridge, it needs one for each lock (not efficient enough when working with two close doors). - Supports seems to be lazy when thinking about solutions to work on the app (they seems to disable a feature instead of improve it).

Half way what I was expecting!

We bought this lock after seeing it on an episode of This Old House. We wanted to have control over our garage door for our young son so he couldn't run out without us knowing. Installation was a breeze but the app and adding users is a joke. You cannot do this easy and I couldn't imagine having this on an Air BNB house

this thing is a pain in the ass

 Had to take it off and put back in the old lock before I could leave for work. Can’t imagine how it would have ended up if there had been a fire.

 Turns out they may have been looking for me on Skype using the email address I registered with at August. I incorrectly assumed they would call me on my registered phone number and then move over to Skype/Facetime.  The Z-Wave issue is in fact a problem with the Wink app. August Support indicated this is being worked on, but until Wink issues an update, here is how one gets their August Smart Lock Pro to appear in Wink connected via Z-Wave

 - Once Z-Wave connections have been established with the hub, the August app will continue to ONLY communicate with the lock via Bluetooth (when close enough to the lock). The Wink app can lock and unlock remotely (as well as locally even with no internet). - Hopefully when Wink successfully integrates their platform with August over Z-Wave, the August app will be able to communicate with the lock via Z-Wave allowing use of the enhanced access features.  History  So I got this Smart Lock Pro used from Amazon Warehouse

 Even went so far as to delete five other Z-wave devices from my hub to make it as simple as possible. as well as refreshing and then resetting my Wink Z-wave. Tech said they would call me back to Facetime or Skype to get this working, but it never happened (more than 48 hours ago).  If they know they need to provide expert assistance to get this working (see Jan 4 review), then they need to admit this up front and make it happen, rather than wasting a lot of my time and lower level tech time

SOLVED: Z-Wave and Wink requires some extra steps  No thanks to Amazon Warehouse or help from Wink
