 How Does the lock know when the/\s/door is open or not? The August Lock comes with/\s/ a door sensor that is technically optional/\s/to install, but you really should install it. Now The last auto feature this lock has is called/\s/auto unlock which is a pretty cool feature,/\s/ though one that hasn’t been as useful for me as I/\s/would have originally thought. What This feature/\s/ does is put a geofence around your home and then/\s/when the app recognizes you’ve, left your home and/\s/ have come back, it’ll combine that data and/\s/wait for your phone’s bluetooth signal to/\s/ come within range of your smart lock and/\s/then your lock will automatically unlock. However With homes like mine where you/\s/walk up some stairs, I’ve found that/\s/ by time I get up the stairs, the lock has/\s/either relocked already with this feature,/\s/ or it hasn’t actually unlocked and takes too/\s/long, resulting in my just using a regular key

 However, in my experience,/\s/ it's been more like six to eight weeks of battery/\s/life. And When you compare the estimated battery/\s/ life of the 4th Gen lock with the previous/\s/generation which August estimates will 6 months/\s/ to a year of battery life,, the third generation/\s/lock’s battery life seems like a much better deal. So The battery life has been a bit of a/\s/downside with this Smart Lock In my experience,/\s/ and another related downside are the batteries/\s/it takes. The 4th Gen takes the CR123 sized/\s/ battery which are easy enough to order from/\s/major retailers here in the US like Amazon,/\s/ and I’ve linked them in the description/\s/below, but they’re far less common and thus/\s/ more pricey than the AA batteries the previous/\s/generation of the August smart lock required

August Wifi Smart Lock Review - 6 Months Later

Man, you made further than me. I gave up trying to setup my August Smart Lock Pro in the Home app. And, within August’s own app, it’ll just tell me that the lock is paired with another home already for HomeKit… which is impossible since I’ve reset the darn thing countless times to try to get this to work.

I don't understand what I'm missing here -- I see all these glowing reviews of the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock, but I cannot for the life of me get mine working reliably with HomeKit. 

First of all, **August's HomeKit setup instructions flat out do not work**. They instruct to set up the lock through their app, and then to enable HomeKit through their app -- not the Home app. Since the lock apparently only works on HomeKit over Bluetooth (sounds like this is an Apple-enforced thing), I've placed my hub, a HomePod Mini, right next to the lock when trying to pair per August's instructions. Without fail, attempting to enable HomeKit via the August app gives a 'Failed to Pair' message. I don't believe I've even once gotten 'enable HomeKit' to work through the August app.

I've had sporadic success getting the lock to pair by instead adding it through the Home app and *then* viewing its HomeKit settings in the August app. When I'm able to get this far, the lock state seems to be successfully communicated to the Home app (sends notifications when locking, unlocking, etc).

**Problems begin, however, when I try commanding the lock through the Home app.** In my experience this only works about 10% of the time -- the other 90% of the time, it just hangs on some kind of 'sending command' state. Worse yet, most of the time when it hangs like this, the lock state ends up being incorrectly reported in both the Home **and** August apps. **The lock will be physically unlocked, and both of these apps will report it as being locked.** This is a huge security problem! Once it's in this state, the lock fails to respond to any further commands from both the Home and August apps until it's manually turned to match the state the app thinks it's in.

I don't understand how something as basic and critical as "reporting the correct lock state through the company's own app" can be this broken on something this well reviewed.

I have done so many resets, factory resets, re-calibrations, and have removed/re-added this thing to HomeKit so many times, and I'm just about ready to return it and give up on smart locks entirely until there's something that's at least as reliable as my Philips Hue lights.

From what I'm seeing, this is a pretty common experience with this product. Has August/Apple just broken the software recently? Is this just the current state of HomeKit smart locks? Is there an alternative out there that just works?

UPDATE 2: Ran into more problems when trying to set up a second one, so I&#39;m just returning all of my August stuff and switching to Schlage Sense locks. Hopefully Schlage&#39;s software is less garbage than August&#39;s.

What the heck is going on with HomeKit integration on the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock?

 The Smart Lock Pro - Feels a little cheap. For $200 it should feel solid when turning the cylinder to lock and unlock. However, it feels loose. I thought I might have just gotten one that wasn't put together correctly but found that the demo models in store felt the same way

 The lock that is paired with the bridge doesn't lose it's connection and thankfully, that's the door I use most often. So if you want to make sure you have a continuous connection to your lock, even when in your house and standing next to your door, you have to have the bridge. The Smart Lock - This feels like a legit dead bolt lock. It's easy to install and the set up was easy

 It also does not recognize that I have left the 200 foot perimeter. So at the moment, the auto lock / unlock feature is useless. The paired lock also works pretty well with Alexa.  I will be keeping the locks installed in hopes that the performance improves, especially after adding the second bridge

 I also have to restart my phone to re-establish the connection to the lock that is not paired with the bridge. I find this more than just a little ridiculous. The lock that is paired with the bridge doesn't lose it's connection and thankfully, that's the door I use most often. So if you want to make sure you have a continuous connection to your lock, even when in your house and standing next to your door, you have to have the bridge

This little puck is one of our most anticipated smart home products of the year. It's called the August Wi-fi Smart Lock and it lived up to our expectations. It's awesome. Let me tell you what

 You're not limited to bluetooth range when you want to control the device, You can lock and unlock your door from anywhere. Your phone has a data connection, which is really gonna come in handy when I'm allowed to leave my place again and that's pretty much what's new. but they didn't reinvent the wheel here. They just made a lock that kind of resembles a wheel and makes a funny sound when you're rolling onto more stuff

 Smart notifications which are flexible and intuitive so you'll know if you left the door open or if someone unlocked it manually or whatever other info you might want. Also, you can set up an auto lock when you leave and have it automatically unlock when you get back home. You can also control the lock with your smart speaker of choice. Here's an Amazon and a Google smart speaker

August Wi-Fi Smart Lock review: The best lock gets better

 The only issue I found was when pairing it to home assistant you have to use the secure pairing or it won't work.

I have an August Smart Lock Pro, 3rd gen. It supports Zwave and works fine with both Smarthings and Home Assistant (I am in the process of moving from Smarthings to HomeAssistant). 

What's the go to smart lock these days?  I want it to be SmartThings and Home Assistant compatible (unless one lock is far superior for some reason) in the event I actually move to control my devices with my HA setup.   If you like or dislike a specific device please include why to help me narrow down my options.

Which Smart Lock Do You Recommend AND Why?

-thermostat ( have had a Ecobee and Nest previously)

-speakers (have homepods so this isn’t much of an issue but if you have something that you love please share)

I’d like to be on one app (Home) to use everything. 

I do have the Starling hub FYI but if I can keep it clean with a native setup that would be ideal. One less thing to troubleshoot. 

Really appreciate it. Would love to get the builder a list of what to include when the time comes so your input is welcome.

HomeKit compatible (native) recommendations

 We have ours set to 2 minutes and with the magnetic sensor, won't try to lock unless the door is fully closed. If we need to run outside for a short time, we can leave the door ajar to prevent getting locked out. Auto unlock feature works pretty well. I can hear the door unlock when I drive into the driveway

  CON: I tried to install the Smart Lock on a Schlage double cylinder deadbolt that has a slight offset. Unfortunately, the plastic adapters were too short for the pin and I ended up replacing the deadbolt with a newer Kwikset single cylinder with smartkey features.  This is really an App issue that only allows two types of users, Owner and Guest. However, only Owner which has full access to control all lock settings, view all users security codes, etc

 The keypad comes in handy so that we can unlock in case we don't have our smart phone with us. It also allows us to press the iCon button to automatically lock door when we are leaving. I installed the August Smart Lock, model ASL-3B with the Smart Keypad and August Connect several months ago and wanted to provide some pros and cons. The locks are installed on the interior garage door and used as our main entrance, so gets extensive use.  PRO: Still on the original batteries. Auto Lock feature can be configured for immediately or after a delay of 1 - 30 minutes

Now why I do not recommend wifi/bluetooth locks - security. I am not saying those locks are not secure. In fact most of locks are secure enough as next to the lock there is usually a glass window or 'paper' doors but - any kid with laptop technically could try to break it (not saying it will be easy but simple laptop will have technical capabilities to do so ) or hack it wifi/bluetooth locks. Sniffing those aint quantum physics

I'm outgrowing google home/increasingly frustrated with it and am working on setting up home assistant. At the same time, I'm in the market for a smart lock. Reading recent reviews (by professional reviewers), the ultraloq u-bolt pro looks great. Reading user reviews paints a different picture. 

And this is basically my issue everywhere I turn - yale, august, schlange, eufy, wyze, et cetera. Something looks good, but on closer inspection user reviews are littered with frustration and aggregated ratings (overall star rating on amazon) show strong signs of review manipulation. For some, there are reports of serious security issues - from locks that can be defeated with simple brute force attacks over bluetooth, to locks that can be defeated with a screwdriver or magnet. 

I want a smart lock for literally one reason: when my partner rolls over in the middle of the night and asks if I locked the back door, I want to lock it or check it from my phone instead of getting up. My ideal smart lock would be equivalent to a 'dumb' keypad lock, with the exception that it would be able to lock the door remotely over a bluetooth or wifi connection. For security reasons, I would prefer if the network-connected/remotely operable parts of the lock were physically incapable of unlocking the door (i.e., can lock the door only).

I guess I wonder if any of you have any suggestions. Are all these smart locks on the market trash? They seem it. Has anyone here had a positive experience with a smartlock *and* owned their lock longer than a year? I'm open also to DIY options.

<div class="md">I&#39;m outgrowing google home/increasingly frustrated with it and am working on setting up home assistant. At the same time, I&#39;m in the market for a smart lock. Reading recent reviews (by professional reviewers), the ultraloq u-bolt pro looks great. Reading user reviews paints a different picture. 

And this is basically my issue everywhere I turn - yale, august, schlange, eufy, wyze, et cetera. Something looks good, but on closer inspection user reviews are littered with frustration and aggregated ratings (overall star rating on amazon) show strong signs of review manipulation. For some, there are reports of serious security issues - from locks that can be defeated with simple brute force attacks over bluetooth, to locks that can be defeated with a screwdriver or magnet. 

I want a smart lock for literally one reason: when my partner rolls over in the middle of the night and asks if I locked the back door, I want to lock it or check it from my phone instead of getting up. My ideal smart lock would be equivalent to a &#39;dumb&#39; keypad lock, with the exception that it would be able to lock the door remotely over a bluetooth or wifi connection. For security reasons, I would prefer if the network-connected/remotely operable parts of the lock were physically incapable of unlocking the door (i.e., can lock the door only).

I guess I wonder if any of you have any suggestions. Are all these smart locks on the market trash? They seem it. Has anyone here had a positive experience with a smartlock and owned their lock longer than a year? I&#39;m open also to DIY options.

another smart lock question

 I can also unlock the door from anywhere on the planet via WiFi. This is very handy if I want someone to have access while I'm away from home. This came in handy last year when I needed a repairman to fix my air-conditioning when I couldn't be home.  I just installed this 3rd gen lock on another door

 It is taller (4.8") and more narrow (2.6") than my older 2nd generation, round Smart Lock. Also, the housing is not as thick

 The August tech rep told me that the DoorSense feature will not work with either a metal door frame or a metal retractable screen frame such as I have.  I wish I had know that before I drilled out the hole. Hopefully this review will save someone else from making this mistake. You're welcome!  Other than that hiccup, I'm please with this new 3rd generation Smart Lock and would not hesitate to recommend one

6") than my older 2nd generation, round Smart Lock. Also, the housing is not as thick. Not counting the deadbolt switch, it only sticks out 1 3/4" compared to 2 1/4" on the older unit. Hope this helps you
