Even a $99 AT-LP60X and a pair of powered speakers would be an absolutely **tremendous** improvement in sound quality compared to a suitcase player. Anything much above that will be spending more and more money for less and less improvement -- not to say that there isn't *any* improvement in a $1000 turntable versus a $100-$300 one, but it will be more subtle, not an obvious night-and-day difference, unless you really do have golden ears.

Maybe 5 years ago that would have got you a vintage and all of the accessories, but not now. If $100 is your max and you want/need a table now, then just spend it on a new table itself. At least you will have a better chance of covering most of your bases than just one. An AT-LP60X is inching closer to $200 every day now.
