AKG K701

Before Summit-fi was as much of a thing as it is now, the DT880, K701 and HD600/650 were compared as the High-end Trio, now more like the Mid-fi trio or dynamic trio. During this period, Beyer was the clear choice for those seeking a V-shapped sound, Sennheiser was the choice for those seeking a mid-centric sound, and AKG was a little adrift looking for an identity. Their wide soundstage was their selling point, but it wasn't still beyond reproach.

I was quite keen to check out the much vaunted and praised 701s from AKG. I've been using Audio Technica ATH-50s through a Benchmark H1 Headphone amp and have been more than happy. But the reviews of the 701 suggested I was missing something extraordinary, so my curiosity took hold, and made me pick...

Tonality: I dont want a really cold headphone. I want more of a warm or neutral sound, but i want headphone to be more on the bright side. Source: I dont have an amp and i know that K701 needs it but i dont really know if i would have enough money to get an amp. But i might also use the hedphones when i will go on walks so i dont really want to get an amp but if the sound is much better i will probably get one.

I hadn't even heard of the company. Currently I own DT770 Pro's (daily "drivers" for 10 years), and AKG K701's. I don't yet have an amp, but am considering the Shiit Magni Heresy or 3+. From what I have heard listening to them so far these are spectacular, and even compared the 701's completely blow them out of the water.

Grey foam turned a dark yellow over the last year. I dont even wear them much and they live in a pet free smoe free recording studio with clean air. I have short hair and shower every day so its not me! Also, there's no serial number to match with AKG and they look a bit suspect ... I called AKG and...

I upgraded from my Audio-Technica ATH-M30 (cost about 60$ to 80$) to a pair of AKG K701 headphones ($550 at launch, about 200$ to 250$ now) and so far, I'm not disappointed. Love these headphones. They are some of the best I've heard. The thing is, everyone's ears are different - and so are the characteristics of music styles, the WAY albums are recorded, how instruments react to a recording and the speakers presenting the sound... So with that said, these are fantastic...
