Were I starting over now I would probably go TP-Link for everything except my router. My router would be OpnSense on hardware I purchased. That being said, my EdgeRouter X has done a fine job for me and since I already had on AP AC Lite I just added another and repositioned the original one as it works fine other than a few spots in the house.

I read a lot of posts about Ubiquiti products and they range from, they are junk and all hype to they are the best.

I did read a decent amount of posts that say their products are not that good and there are better options.

Does anyone know the honest truth? I need a wifi 6 access point and was thinking of getting the access point U6 Lite.

I have also read that their switches are junk. I was thinking about buying one of their smaller poe+ switches to power the wifi 6 access point. 

Thanks if anyone knows the truth and if I should consider another better product from another manufacturer? If so what manufacturer is better?

What is the truth about Ubiquiti? Hype or is there better options?

 So in a nutshell, this is the Edge Max Edge Router. I'm running the V19 firmware. Great little device, definitely happy with it. Performs really well for $49

11 and it's the default password. And the first thing it's gonna do when I log in is wanna know if I wanna run the wizard. Now, if you don't wanna run the wizard, you're gonna have to open up the command line and start configuring the interfaces. Run the wizard unless you wanna jump right into that and you're familiar with how to configure firewalls right from the command line

 Plug it into your ISP, plug it in this case to ETH4 and then there we go. So we're gonna apply, apply changes and reboot. System reboots, it takes under 60 seconds to get booted up. It's reasonably fast

 Great little device, definitely happy with it. Performs really well for $49. You can't beat the price. Firewall NAT services

 Okay, looks good. Let's plug in our UAP and it should power up just fine at this point since I'm using 24 volt passive. There we go, it's flashing yellow and in a second this should turn green. And there we go

 Okay, so plug that in there and let's power the Edge Router X with PoE. All right, so power's on the PoE adapter. The lights are coming on the Edge Router X. It looks like it's booting up just fine

 I'm going to unplug this guy. So that was with the included adapter, which let me double check the specs on that. I'm actually going to pull the plug on it. And yeah, it says it's a 12 volt

 This is just a standard UAP from Ubiquiti and this is, yeah, 24 volts.5 amp PoE. So let's plug it in and see if it'll power it right off the bat. Oh, this is plugged into the wrong one, let's go over here

..UNTIL NOW! 1) You have to do your initial setup connected to the WAN port (eth0), then run a setup wizard, then move your cable to your lan port (eth1) to continue? Makes perfect sense. Just run the wizard for me! This only takes about 3 mins, but when you lock yourself out of the stupid thing 5 times during the setup, the physical cable manipulation, 35 reboots, and 15 mins of setup wizard are more than enough for me to throw this thing in the garbage can

  In the end, I guess it is in fact a router...and it does in fact support pretty high throughput for its $$

 It was not much larger than a deck of cards.  I'll spare you the details of my setup process, but here are a few key points:  - I agree with the other reviews: this is not targeted at your typical consumer. It's not plug-and-play or idiot proof. There is a lot of power in this tiny box

Great product, great value

 So for home users, this is still an excellent device. I think it's an excellent purchase. And, you know, you combine that, because this is just the router, with like one of these UniFi APACs. And this is, depending on where you find it on sale, between $50 and $60

 Maybe one day I'll do a video where I combine both together but or put them in a playlist and just watch both. It's pretty straightforward how to set them up once you kind of get the idea of how these work. But they're both excellent products and really, you know, big fan of a lot of the UniFi platform we deployed a lot of our clients. And we've used these other clients that don't need QoS, they don't have any VoIP systems or anything special

 They just need, you know, a lot of our small businesses are just a couple few computers. This is way better than the crap that you get from the cable providers here in America, you know, between Comcast and Wide Open West, the two popular ones here. They give you kind of crappy modems that just don't, yeah, they're not that great. Bridging them over to this, easy peasy solution

 And, you know, you combine that, because this is just the router, with like one of these UniFi APACs. And this is, depending on where you find it on sale, between $50 and $60. I've seen them for less, I've seen them for more, depends on the price, when you're checking it, but roughly in the $50 range. And this is roughly in the $89 to $100 range

After issuing a support ticket, where I was told to just change the LAN IP range, which didn't work, and wouldn't having been a solution anyway, I'm giving up and returning the UMD Pro.  Ultimately, it lacks the ability to have a separate management IP address (or even change it), which would allow you to continue to use the Ubiquiti Site CloudKey Network Application's current configuration with the UMD Pro

 All of those are easily configured to suit your existing network. Keep that in mind as you read on..

  What a disappointment.  For what it's worth: I've attempted to find the product manager to determine that they might have on the road map to fix this, but Ubiquiti makes that more than a little difficult as well. Not to mention that almost all of their development happens in the Ukraine and Latvia, making it even more difficult.

The Dream Machine Pro has serious flaws and is not ready for Prime Time

 -Very easy to setup and manage. -All software components work well, including L2TP/IPSEC VPNs, SSL VPNs with RADIUS, traffic management, filtering/blocking apps and websites, hell it's even got an IDS/IPS system built in, etc. Great "all in one" solution for many small businesses out there. -I purchased a 8TB Seagate Skyhawk drive, popped it in and it works perfectly with no issues to record video from unifi protect and various unifi cameras

  THE GOOD: -It's cheap -nicely built and the software is flashy and works well. -A very nice platform to use if you buy all of their hardware for your network. -Very easy to setup and manage. -All software components work well, including L2TP/IPSEC VPNs, SSL VPNs with RADIUS, traffic management, filtering/blocking apps and websites, hell it's even got an IDS/IPS system built in, etc

Nice product - though severly lacking in features it SHOULD have

If you want to expand your network so you've got switches in a few key spots where extra devices are desired plus add phone and security camera functionality while isolating IoT devices onto a segmented and firewalled network and building traffic profiles for all of those devices and ensuring network uptime with redundant paths while preventing packet storms, the prosumer level gear will let you do that. It's got a pretty full suite of network functionality - maybe not as great as the biggest vendors on their latest platforms, but it's pretty full.

I'm interesting in buying a router and a couple of WAP's to go with my 1Gb network.

My question is should I be buying a commercial router like a Ubiquity Dream Machine Pro or a Gaming specific router like the Asus GT-AXE11000?

If anyone knows why would you choose one over the other?

Are gaming routers a scam?

I bought a UDM pro and a unifi 24 port POE switch, unifi 6 LR AP as well as 3 unifi cameras and a unifi doorbell camera. So far, I'm loving it! Setup was insanely easy, I did it all from my phone in under 15 minutes. Cameras are easy to use, and record to a 8tb hard drive I threw in the UDM pro.
