 Hey, what's going on everybody? So today I'm going to show you how to set up a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X from scratch for use with your home network. So first off, the EdgeRouter X is not like your typical home router that you would buy from Walmart or Target or whatever. You can't just bring it home, plug it into your modem and then your desktop and everything. Be good to go right out of the box

 Please don't plug anything emitting power into 1, 2, or 3. It'll probably mess it up. I haven't tried it. I don't want to gamble with my money

 It's just not plug and play. So first off, the router I'm going to use in this video is just the regular EdgeRouter X, not the SFP version. So if you don't know the difference between the regular 5-port EdgeRouter X and the 6-port EdgeRouter X SFP, the regular EdgeRouter X only has the copper ports and it is only able to accept power over ethernet and pass it through. It doesn't create it itself

 So let's just go back to the main page, which is the dashboard tab. And let's also open up another website just to see if the internet is working. Let's go to walmart.com

Edgerouter X First Time Setup

I'm using a Ubiquiti Edge Router X w/ Smart QoS and it's a plug 'n play solution if you don't want to deal with a more of a technical fix.

I've been having issues with my internet with xfinity for a while. I have 100/5 right now for 35$ and when my wife for example joins a zoom call that does about 3MB/s up and down at the same time while i'm playing - lets say Rocket League, it throws it off SO bad. I legitimately have to be connected directly to a modem because you'd think being on ethernet is good and all until someone else decides to use the internet.

Another instance is I get random desync while gaming on other games (DayZ) where I would be playing with a buddy, pinging the server on cmd would be fine but the latency is just through the roof. I am unable to decipher the root of the cause.

Why does even a little bit of uploading eat my gaming performance?

 A reboot fixed that. But a couple of days later, it hung for good. The router booted, but wouldn't hand out IP addresses and you couldn't ping it. Reboots and then a factory reset didn't fix it either

 Somewhere in between a consumer router and "to complex for the average joe" IT admin wanna be. It does some pretty good deep packet inspection and the NAT/Firewall rules are flexible enough that you can do your own hairpin NATs - or just the builtin port forwarding feature. It gives you quite a bit of traffic flow info to track the NAT/Firewall rules. It's a bit more in depth on the GUI but still has the ease of use that you get in a consumer grade router GUI

I'd give this a 2 star rating if it wasn't for my experience with Ubiquiti products. This router keep freezing the GUI (cleared by clicking the reload button) and the router itself hung on me the first week (no routing, couldn't ping it). A reboot fixed that. But a couple of days later, it hung for good

 I have enough faith in Ubiquity products that I just sent it back and ordered another one. I've been running their radio panels for several years now and they just work - period. No reboots, etc. Set and forget

Failed on me which is rare for Ubiquiti

I've always liked the Ubiquiti stuff - at home, I use their AP's (and have for businesses in the past) and used to use a USG-3.  However, when connection speeds increased, the USG-3 was not cutting it - Smart Queues (fq_codel) was simply not able to keep up (I have a 350mbps symmetrical FTTH connection). I sold it, and much to my dismay, continued to use my ISP-provided modem.  Fast-forward to today - I just moved (same ISP) but the router they provided me has a lot of bufferbloat - 90ms+ when downloading

 So, due to Ubiquiti's lack of a suitable offering in the range I'm willing to spend, I buy the ER-4.  Overall, this thing is great - I've never used an EdgeMAX product, but I setup UNMS and I'm happy with it. Overall, it just works - a great device. Setup was a breeze

 I sold it, and much to my dismay, continued to use my ISP-provided modem.  Fast-forward to today - I just moved (same ISP) but the router they provided me has a lot of bufferbloat - 90ms+ when downloading. So, due to Ubiquiti's lack of a suitable offering in the range I'm willing to spend, I buy the ER-4.  Overall, this thing is great - I've never used an EdgeMAX product, but I setup UNMS and I'm happy with it

 I can get it to work, but the limit on mine seems to be around ~300mbps of actual throughput - a sizable hit, and not one I'm willing to make.  The next thing I want to do is setup an OpenVPN connection, to use over a VLAN, to my lab network. This, while it works, simply is a pain in the ass - I personally don't know why I didn't test this more, but I hate having to manage VPN functionality that fully exists in the CLI. It's lazy

A great box if it fits your needs

 The "wizards" don't reflect current configuration, and they all have the same UI (and silently ignore things they don't want to pay attention to, so you'll think you've set things up when you, in fact, haven't). Also, the wizards do only very minimal setup---you have to drop down into the utterly non-intuitive CLI to do anything useful. The router is lightning fast, though. Has no problem handling GBit fiber

So if you need to do port forwarding and such, different firewall policies, NAT, NAT groups, this is where you do it, services, VPNs, IPsec site to site, QoS, which is quality of service, users, yeah, you know that already, fig tree, even I don't know what that is, that looks pretty complicated. I'll have to do more research on that later, and wizards, that's where we started. So while we're at it, let's also just make sure that the router is routing correctly and the internet is working, so let's just try various websites, so Google, yep, that loads, YouTube, yep, that seems to be loading too, let's see, let's go back to Google, let's do a speed test, oh, that's more like it, I mean the 56 download looks right, but the upload, that looks kind of pathetic, it's supposed to be up to 10, I'm not sure why it's so low, anyway, yeah, so I just bought a new internet for my place, and yeah, it was around 50 download, and it's supposed to be up to 10 upload, but oh well

 But I decided, just me personally, I want to be a little more complicated and I want to use this more for experimentation. So I'm not going to have that enabled. But if you just want one range of IP addresses, then yeah, you would have that enabled. So the secondary LAN, ethernet one, this is the range of IP addresses, DHCP is enabled

x. And yes, DHCP server. Now for the user setup here, we can change the default password. So I'm just going to create a secure password here real fast

Ultimately, it lacks the ability to have a separate management IP address (or even change it), which would allow you to continue to use the Ubiquiti Site CloudKey Network Application's current configuration with the UMD Pro

 All of those are easily configured to suit your existing network. Keep that in mind as you read on..

For what it's worth: I've attempted to find the product manager to determine that they might have on the road map to fix this, but Ubiquiti makes that more than a little difficult as well. The Dream Machine Pro has serious flaws and is not ready for Prime Time

 -Very easy to setup and manage. -All software components work well, including L2TP/IPSEC VPNs, SSL VPNs with RADIUS, traffic management, filtering/blocking apps and websites, hell it's even got an IDS/IPS system built in, etc. Great "all in one" solution for many small businesses out there. -I purchased a 8TB Seagate Skyhawk drive, popped it in and it works perfectly with no issues to record video from unifi protect and various unifi cameras

  THE GOOD: -It's cheap -nicely built and the software is flashy and works well. -A very nice platform to use if you buy all of their hardware for your network. -Very easy to setup and manage. -All software components work well, including L2TP/IPSEC VPNs, SSL VPNs with RADIUS, traffic management, filtering/blocking apps and websites, hell it's even got an IDS/IPS system built in, etc

If you want to expand your network so you've got switches in a few key spots where extra devices are desired plus add phone and security camera functionality while isolating IoT devices onto a segmented and firewalled network and building traffic profiles for all of those devices and ensuring network uptime with redundant paths while preventing packet storms, the prosumer level gear will let you do that. It's got a pretty full suite of network functionality - maybe not as great as the biggest vendors on their latest platforms, but it's pretty full.

I'm interesting in buying a router and a couple of WAP's to go with my 1Gb network.

My question is should I be buying a commercial router like a Ubiquity Dream Machine Pro or a Gaming specific router like the Asus GT-AXE11000?

Are gaming routers a scam?

I bought a UDM pro and a unifi 24 port POE switch, unifi 6 LR AP as well as 3 unifi cameras and a unifi doorbell camera. So far, I'm loving it! Setup was insanely easy, I did it all from my phone in under 15 minutes. Cameras are easy to use, and record to a 8tb hard drive I threw in the UDM pro.

I am looking at my next home network upgrade, and seeking advice!

I currently have a pfSense running on a zotac, I liked it so far, but it’s time to refresh the box as it is not keeping up! Restarts are becoming more common but after 5 years run not abnormal!  And after upgrading my internet connection, I realized that I am loosing 20% of my bandwidth, even with only the firewall feature enabled!

My search led me towards[UniFi Dream Machine Pro/UDM](https://unifi-network.ui.com/dreammachine), performance and UI looks superb, but all I have seen is YouTube video’s and some how-to guides!

Can anyone share their experience with UDM? Hopefully someone who did a move like the one I am planning!

I have a 1 Gbps Internet, I should use the ISP’s router which has 1Gbps Ethernet Interface, as UDM has 3.5Gbps inspected traffic IPS throughput my assumption is that I will get the full 1Gbps out of UDM (all inspected and clean), can someone share if they are in practice seeing what I assume should happen?

I have TP-link Deco in Access Point mode (they set behind my pfSense which also acts as DHCP/DNS), and are Ethernet back-hauled (via a Gigabit Ethernet Switch), anyone doing such setup with UDM who can tell me if I will regret this UniFi/Deco coexistence or not?
