 The other dilemma: what if you need the operations points (and it's the max amount), but the event is yours and also really good? The game is a game of compromises, and balancing.  Think - if people played this, and were used to a give-and-take with their opponents, compromising and yet still achieving, how would discourse look between people? How would politics look? If only we realized, as you must in this game, that the ideal and the perfect are out of reach and aiming for them ends only in disappointment. Instead, we must work together and do our best. And this game - despite you and your opponent being enemies in the Cold War, teaches you to work together even which fighting each other

  The actual method of doing that is more complex. You have a deck of cards. Cards are essentially of 4 types. Soviet events, US events, Neutral events, and Scoring

 You have to do things which benefit your enemy. And yet, you still have to find a way to mitigate, and hopefully come out on top, even as you play the event that brings your enemy to the brink of victory. Have I played turns where the US player had entirely Soviet events, and the Soviet player had entirely US events? Yes, yes I have. Those are the most interesting rounds, and the most entertaining

 Instead, we must work together and do our best. And this game - despite you and your opponent being enemies in the Cold War, teaches you to work together even which fighting each other.  Again, it takes some time to learn. But every person that I've taught the game (you don't need to read the rule book to learn the game if you play with someone who knows it already) has enjoyed it and become hooked, even if they weren't previously incredibly interested in detailed or complicated strategy games

Excellent Game: Win by Compromise

 I wanted to play it but had two problems: I have never been a boardgamer before so I was worried about the complexity and who on earth was going to sit down for a 3 hour boardgame with me?  Ultimately, I took the plunge and ordered the game. I informed a friend that he was drafted into playing it with me several nights during our yearly get-together.  The instruction manual was more of a reference and left us both confused about the game. Eventually, we just started following the example game and learning as we went

 We started learning the cards and playing more strategically interesting hands. The gameplay itself lead to a lot of passionate gameplay leading to cries of anguish (such as when my friend thought he had me with Blockade in the mid-year when I had been holding a card worth 3 ops for the last several hands as I knew Blockade was out there), fear (every time DEFCON went to 2) and joy (Beartrap, China Card, Ussuri River and Nixon Plays the China Card all in the same hand as the US player).  We definitely look forward to playing it again and figure that is two absolute newbies to both boardgame and this game can figure it out in 3 plays, then anyone can do it!

Took a few play attempts to learn but loving it

 There are a few nuance rules. Obviously, but you look at the map. You have the entire world before you just like in the Cold War, you have spheres of influence, you're trying to get people to side with you and just like in the Cold War in real life. You have things like China, who is kind of a wild card and jumps which means Chiang kai-shek and Mao all these different things happening throughout the Cold War history

 This is not the actual starting game set up, but these are some just some representatives how the game looks because you look at this and you think how in the world does this game have all this theme and this tightness that you're talking about packed into it? I'M you're talking about just a whole bunch of cards, a couple dice that are used and these tokens these war game tokens that you could probably use tweezers for if you were old enough to want to use tweezers for and all that kind of stuff. But let's take a look at the board first and see this is the map the mounted board, that GMT talks, about which any other company would just call that a board, but apparently sometimes they release paper mats in anyway. So US starts here. This is the US

 You wouldn't have to agree the u.s. player and you would, if you can only do it for one or the other, but if you're playing the opponent's card you get the operations points that they get to do whatever the card says. So you have that push and pull window I'll play this card to play

 And so it's a real push and pull of. When you do things, how you do things and here's the deal, these are just the early war card, the cold war drags on into this 40-year conflict. You get mid war cards and late work cards all adding to the complexity of the game. Some cards give you victory points when you score you'll score, and do this tug-of-war thing too, then, at the last round, at the end of round 10, whoever's ahead wins

Twilight Struggle Review - with Bryan Drake

 It captures the theme beautifully, as the USSR and the USA play tug of war with the world as the stage and ultimate prize. In your twilight struggle, you must manage crisis, take advantage of beneficial historical events, spread your influence, and try desperately to stave off nuclear war as the DEFCON rating drops and threatens armageddon.  A word of warning to new players; the USSR starts off stronger than the USA, and this can be discouraging to new players. As the war progresses, the USA will regain their ground and give the USSR a real run for their money, so don't lose hope!  If you are a strategy fan this is a must buy

one of the best 2 player board games I've ever played

Bad artwork definitely stopped my group from playing older classics: they didn't want to play Teotihuacan which was visually okay (not good, not bad), they sure as heck don't want to play Burgundy, Dominion, Twilight Struggle, Power Grid...  

Personally, I don't know if I've ever decided that a good game is any less fun because the artwork doesn't appeal to my style (thinking of Root and Terraforming Mars specifically-- fun games, but aesthetics are only okay to me). And then there's Photosynthesis which had beautiful artwork but played very slow for me, but I don't mind that it's still on the shelf since at least it looks nice haha. Curious what other people think.

Can good artwork make up for a meh game? Can meh artwork ruin a good game?

This game is pretty rule heavy, so I wouldn't recommend if you are new to board games or if you like games that you can learn in 15-30 minutes. That being said, this game is great if you are a fan of longer war games (think Risk, Axis and Allies, War of the Ring). My favorite part about this game is that the event cards are all reflective of important political events at the time. You don't need to have a lot of history knowledge to enjoy the game, but the facts and tidbits along the way keep the game engaging when it gets drawn out

Innovative, engaging, and educational

Intricate with a bazillion little easy-to-lose pieces for any age, this Cold War game looked like a winner, but just ended in mutually assured destruction. My sister was reading the instructions out loud for literally 45 minutes while we tried to set up the game. Never got to play it. We gave up

Unbelievably Complicated Set Up and Learning - Wasted My Money and Time!

I have to add that since becoming a parent I discovered the review site [Two Moms Game]([URL REMOVED] These two provide some outstanding game reviews, and always include a few additional points about how easy or difficult the games' setup and tear down is, and how easy or difficult the game is to walk away from mid-game as happens while managing children at the same time. I'm about 18 months into the hobby, it has become one of my favourite things to do with my wife and I feel like I have a decent mix of good games.

We are awaiting our baby's arrival any day now and our ability to play has massively reduced. Very understandably, my wife finds it hard to have the energy to play games at the moment but we are getting the odd game in.

This made me think, does anyone have any advice on how we can still keep this amazing hobby part of our lives with a new baby? Are there any types of game you'd recommend? Do I just need to park it for a while?

Great Game

Clicked after a while: **Mottainai** This game took a couple of plays for the rules to stick, and then even longer for me to really understand how all of the pieces fit together. There's a lot to this game in a really tiny package, and I highly recommend it as a heavy filler game. There's a PnP version on the kickstarter page, so it is risk free to try. Adore this game for being pretty thinky and very tactical

Never Clicked: **Twilight Struggle** and **Watergate** these games are pretty similar and I thought my problem with Twilight Struggle was that it was pretty long and just too big for me to really get it after a couple of attempts to play it. Tried playing Watergate a few times and I bounced off of it because I never felt like I could do what I wanted and was mitigating more than playing. Ultimately, didn't enjoy either game enough to really give them another shot, but I can respect them as games.

 There's a PnP version on the kickstarter page, so it is risk free to try. Adore this game for being pretty thinky and very tactical.

For me it's:

1. **Clicked immediately - Auztralia:** I loved this game from the first play. The rules are lean, the turns are simple but very deceptively deep. The mix of themes (infrastructure building &amp; war against Lovecraftian Old Ones) is so unique as well. The semi-random map setup mechanic makes the game very replayable, and gives you interesting choices even during setup when you're deciding where to put your port.
2. **Clicked after a while - Jaws of the Lion:** I had to drag this one out a few times in order to "get it". For the first few times I felt like the mechanics were just too heavy and fiddly for not much payoff - just get a couple of coins or XP, no real story...that's it? But in my last game something happened and suddenly I can't stop thinking about it. The way the different enemies behave, the way the cards synergise with each other and between players, the legacy elements...it's suddenly rewarding.
3. **Never clicked - Eldritch Horror:** I've tried so many times to enjoy this game but I think I just...don't. I thought buying all the expansions would help enrich the experience and they did a little bit, but there are some underlying factors that just make the game not fun for me. I hate how you can get to a clue encounter and even if you succeed you don't get the clue so you might just camp there for 3-4 turns. I really dislike how swingy and unfair it feels - get the wrong tentacle card at the wrong time and that's two hours of game down the drain. And finally, winning is so anticlimactic it's not rewarding at all: "OK then I do this...and...I guess we won? OK let's pack up I guess".

What's a game that clicked with you immediately, one that clicked after a while, and one that never clicked?

First let me say that this game is heavy and you really need to sit on the toilet and read the instruction manual. You play as either the Russians or the US during the cold war. Everything is based on real events that have happened during that time period. Game is made well and was worth it when learned

 You should play a few practice rounds and maybe watch a youtube video which will give you visuals. Enjoy and win the space race.

Bower's Game Corner

 With a board game that requires parental oversight to be usable, it's either too guided to learn by trial-and-error, or it becomes frustrating quickly and the kids give up.  I hate that this review sounds so harsh since I truly love what this game is trying to do but I just don't see it working well because of how much parental oversight it requires. Note: I had my daughters try out web-based computer teaching games and they took to it much quicker and could solve problems they struggled with on the board game.

Good if you have the time to work with your kids on it, not so much for self-play

 But anyway getting off on a tangent those are the real cons I have not going to be for big strategy gamers or gaming groups or anything like that this is purely for kids. Moving on to the pros though Robot Turtles I saw it on Kickstarter which it absolutely tore up Kickstarter and they instantly appealed to my heart I'm a preschool teacher they said this is for ages 3 and up and I was like I'm getting a copy of this game I got it I brought it in my classroom and let me tell you this game went over like gangbusters they loved it they went crazy for this game it got to the point where I said alright I'm not bringing it in for a week because I'm sick of playing it with you guys because they wanted to play it so much. They're all aged from 3 to 5 and you can definitely see one thing I loved about this game was you can make it more or less complex based on how advanced the children are but a lot of the times I would have 3 year olds playing and I would have 5 year olds playing and I could set up the 5 year old side of the board to be more tricky and I could set up the 3 year old side of the board to be pretty clear and it really adds a nice deal of customization there so you can really play this with children anywhere from I'd say ages 3 to 6, 7 and you're kind of pushing it. They're going to have a lot of fun with this game

 Next, you are going to have stone walls and you are going to have ice walls. Now the stone walls, once you set them there, they are an obstacle. You slap and you say bug and that means that you get to redo your maneuver so let's pretend you turn this way you get to redo that so you move it back and then you can take the yellow card and move that. But any who you are going to try and get to your gem and once everyone has got to their gem you can all have a big old hug and say hooray Billy you got your turtle to your gem because turtles need gems

 Today I'm checking out Robot Turtles from ThinkFun.

 Ages three and up, it'll take about five to fifteen minutes to play, and in Robot Turtles

 players will be steering around turtles, shooting lasers, melting ice, trying to get the jewels.

 Alright then, we're going to take a look at what you're going to get inside of Robot Turtles.
