 I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade.

5)  I’m pretty much still a beginner, and I was concerned about this too when I got my first real mountain bike. I also wasn’t too sure what kind of riding I wanted to do. I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade

All your suggestions for bikes, things to look for or stay away from in a bike are welcome! Trying to make this a post that can be referenced off of for others too. 


1. How can I know what makes a bike valuable? Is there any easy way to guage how good a part/specs are of a bike? (Besides rhe frame material, thats a given)

2. Can you build bikes yourself like computers to be cheaper or is it a completely different story?

3. I know I don't understand wtf the differences between certain parts are, but what about bike lines? For example Trek Roscoe vs Martin ect. What makes all of the bike lines different, and how can I "know" what they are for? (I can assume the numbers mean how top of the line they are, but also is there a certain point that the best of one line wouldnt be worth it compared to another lines lower model?)

4. This one will be a no brainer for you guys, but because I am a noob I have to ask: How does a $500 hardtail compare to a $1000 hardtail? Sure the parts are better, but *what* makes them better?

5. Branching off of #4, what would be the price range for a beginner? From what I have heard I dont like the idea of a super cheap bike, but I dont know if I can take full advantage of something $1500+

6. Obligitory one: at the moment I like flowy, easy-to-go-fast-on trails/parks. I also think offroading in more technical trails is interesting, but I like the roller coaster feel of bike parks better. I have really thought about the Roscoe 7 but then saw the Stance 29 2 and still dont know which is better for my needs as they both are about the same price (lets ignore my point in #5). People say the Stance is good for beginners but is not meant to be "sent" with, can this be bad? I dont want to break a bike for going too crazy lol.


P.S. I think its also worth saying I have a bike, but its really old with spring suspension and rim brakes. So it was good for the time but I cant adjust the suspension down a lot since I am a lightweight. I have thought about upgrading it, but wanted to see my options of getting a modern bike.

New MTB lover here, I have questions that are asked not so often. (And some that are)

 and then you're gonna have these Bontrager XR Endurance Comp Grips which I really like because they've got a flat portion to them. Nice ergonomic shape to be able to keep your hands nice and comfortable. For breaks this is set up with Tech Rose HD em 276 and then for shifters. this bike is set up with Shimano Psaltis Em 315 7-speed shifter

6 seat post and this Bontrager Arvada saddle and then on the cockpit we're gonna have a 31.8 handlebar. A nice wide handlebar. It's gonna run an alloy 31

 This is also an upgrade over the 2020 model with having the M3 15 rather than the M3 10. So now that we've taken a look at some of the features and designs of this Trek Marlin 5 let's go ahead and find out what this bike weighs.  I could have purchased a much, much nicer full suspension for the money I have put down, though that's just my own experience and will not be like yours necessarily. If there's a Marlin 6 available go for it (since it has an air fork), otherwise I'd highly recommend a Vitus Nucleus.

I was thinking about Trek marlin 5 but i figured out i cant do jumps on it. I saw B'twin rockrider st 520s, actually its looking good. So i wanted to ask you before making a mistake. Do you have any mtb suggestions? Do you suggest B'twin 520s?

I'm trying to decide my first mtb.

As the bike is still almost new, it has a "rattling" noise in the front wheel that probably requires some minor adjustments (hopefully at the store they'll be able to check and fix that).

I'm using my Marlin 5 every day for exercising, it makes my daily routine much easier and enjoyable. I have also used it to go biking on some trails, so much fun! 

A significant step up from my previous rides

 I got a M frame and it has the 8x2 gears. Also the hydraulic disc brakes are super efficient.

 When you're out on the roads now the fork, that's another change for this year. Typically, this has been a chromoly fork, but this year they've gone to an aluminum fork, so you actually saved some weight up front, but you still maintain all the mounting points for racks and fenders and things like that also on the fork. This has something that they call a through skew. What a thrill is is basically a skewer on the front that acts like a through axle, so it's closed on the disc brake side and that allows for the front wheel for the front wheel not to have the risk of ever coming

 The 520 is basically built as a tank to be able to hold up for long hauls, and it's got a whole bunch of features to it. That'S gon na make this a really durable touring rig. Now, if you look anywhere on the Internet, this is usually one of the first picks for somebody trying to get a touring bike and get into touring. So let's go over some of the features, that's involved on the 2019 version and talk about some of the upgrades

I suggest a used touring bike. They have a comfortable geometry but you get road handles bars to help keep your hands comfortable instead of flat bars with only 1 hand position. A used trek 520 can be around $400 but you can get them cheaper.

As a youngling I only ever had mountain bikes. Being honest with myself, I will mostly use this on paved paths and somewhat maintained trails. However, I don’t think I will be able to resist the urge to hop up on the occasional curb, etc. (think things that might tear up a road bike). I could possibly want to road race or bike more rugged trails in the future, but in either case I would probably just get another bike built for that.

I’m mostly interested in hybrid bikes with front suspension. In particular, looking at Trek dual sport and Giant Roam. However I’m open to other suggestions. I don’t know much about gravel bikes but they seem pretty popular now.

Budget is ~700, but obviously just want to get the bike I am excited to ride. Thanks!

 With this model, I know the newer models now are coming with a mix of the mountain and the road because they switched out the micro shifters, the barn shifters to STI, and so in order to do so, they had to make them rode. They don't have D or my the STI shifters, so they changed it to, I believe, Olivia, and so now it's Olivia in the back and saw in the front.
