 I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade.

5)  I’m pretty much still a beginner, and I was concerned about this too when I got my first real mountain bike. I also wasn’t too sure what kind of riding I wanted to do. I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade

All your suggestions for bikes, things to look for or stay away from in a bike are welcome! Trying to make this a post that can be referenced off of for others too. 


1. How can I know what makes a bike valuable? Is there any easy way to guage how good a part/specs are of a bike? (Besides rhe frame material, thats a given)

2. Can you build bikes yourself like computers to be cheaper or is it a completely different story?

3. I know I don't understand wtf the differences between certain parts are, but what about bike lines? For example Trek Roscoe vs Martin ect. What makes all of the bike lines different, and how can I "know" what they are for? (I can assume the numbers mean how top of the line they are, but also is there a certain point that the best of one line wouldnt be worth it compared to another lines lower model?)

4. This one will be a no brainer for you guys, but because I am a noob I have to ask: How does a $500 hardtail compare to a $1000 hardtail? Sure the parts are better, but *what* makes them better?

5. Branching off of #4, what would be the price range for a beginner? From what I have heard I dont like the idea of a super cheap bike, but I dont know if I can take full advantage of something $1500+

6. Obligitory one: at the moment I like flowy, easy-to-go-fast-on trails/parks. I also think offroading in more technical trails is interesting, but I like the roller coaster feel of bike parks better. I have really thought about the Roscoe 7 but then saw the Stance 29 2 and still dont know which is better for my needs as they both are about the same price (lets ignore my point in #5). People say the Stance is good for beginners but is not meant to be "sent" with, can this be bad? I dont want to break a bike for going too crazy lol.


P.S. I think its also worth saying I have a bike, but its really old with spring suspension and rim brakes. So it was good for the time but I cant adjust the suspension down a lot since I am a lightweight. I have thought about upgrading it, but wanted to see my options of getting a modern bike.

New MTB lover here, I have questions that are asked not so often. (And some that are)

 and then you're gonna have these Bontrager XR Endurance Comp Grips which I really like because they've got a flat portion to them. Nice ergonomic shape to be able to keep your hands nice and comfortable. For breaks this is set up with Tech Rose HD em 276 and then for shifters. this bike is set up with Shimano Psaltis Em 315 7-speed shifter

6 seat post and this Bontrager Arvada saddle and then on the cockpit we're gonna have a 31.8 handlebar. A nice wide handlebar. It's gonna run an alloy 31

 I could have purchased a much, much nicer full suspension for the money I have put down, though that's just my own experience and will not be like yours necessarily. If there's a Marlin 6 available go for it (since it has an air fork), otherwise I'd highly recommend a Vitus Nucleus.

I was thinking about Trek marlin 5 but i figured out i cant do jumps on it. I saw B'twin rockrider st 520s, actually its looking good. So i wanted to ask you before making a mistake. Do you have any mtb suggestions? Do you suggest B'twin 520s?

I'm trying to decide my first mtb.

As the bike is still almost new, it has a "rattling" noise in the front wheel that probably requires some minor adjustments (hopefully at the store they'll be able to check and fix that).

I'm using my Marlin 5 every day for exercising, it makes my daily routine much easier and enjoyable. I have also used it to go biking on some trails, so much fun! 

A significant step up from my previous rides

 I got a M frame and it has the 8x2 gears. Also the hydraulic disc brakes are super efficient.

 The first part that hits the oncoming air specialist has redeveloped its aerofly bar system, so this is errorfly 2 now and although it doesn't look hugely different to the first generation, if i'm honest um specialized does say, has worked hard on the integration of the cables and To keep that as slick and seamless as possible, and actually one thing that is really nice while we're talking simplicity here, is that this is a two-piece system, not a one-piece bar and stem. So it's essentially the same as a standard, traditional handlebar and stem just with a neat way of integrating all that cabling. In fact, if i just flick that top cap off there, you can actually see underneath there is yeah, essentially just a standard bar stem setup, but with all the aerodynamic gains, obviously elsewhere for aerodynamics up front, then we've got new tube profiles for the head tube and The fork blades and new frame shapes as well that specialized says has been the result of countless iterations through cfd and also wind tunnel testing to really refine those shapes down and find that balance. But hey you know: if that's not your bag, then there is a more corporate red version of this in the dura race: di2 [ Applause, ], spec, [, Music ]

 In 2015, when specialized developed the avenge virus, an even faster version, which it claimed at the time, was a full two minutes quicker than the tarmac over 40 kilometers by 2018, though, the gap between those two key models had definitely started to narrow, whilst the venge had Got faster, it was also significantly lighter and also more comfortable and was starting to become a bit more of an all-round performer. Meanwhile, the tarmac sl6, a bike which had no problem at all, hitting that uci minimum weight limit of 6.8 kilos was definitely more aerodynamic, so it seems almost natural progression, then that we've ended up here. New Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL7 2021 Review

What specialized has done is merge the venge, its long-standing aero bike, with the tarmac, it's all-around road race bike, so you're getting the aero qualities of the vengevis according to specialized. The new tarmac is just as fast as that bike, but it's a whopping kilogram lighter, which is crazy. Other details that are critical to the bike, of course, are the wheels and the cockpit so especially did something unique with the rovol rapid rapid

 The handlebars, the aerofly 2 we've seen on the vias before, is a in my world, a goldilocks solution to having the benefits of an aero handlebar while still having some adjustability we've. Seen. The 4810 is not quite as big as a 5311, but it's still, i found plenty fast

Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL7 Review

 It is a fantastic riding bike, a few blemishes, perhaps not quite perfect, but very, very impressive frame set and handlebar setup and a bike. I reckon that could last you for a good few years anyway, that has been my review of the brand new specialized tarmac sr7 comp. Hopefully it's in stock. Now i don't know if it is but i'll, put a link to her website down below and don't forget to check out the giro clothing at the link down below as well and get 30 discount on this fantastic, looking clothing

 It'S not a bike for riding. Slowly and taking the view around, you is to get your head down pushing hard on the pedals and really going as fast as you can. It clearly borrows heavily from an avenge you replace and feels almost as quick in my testing and definitely feels faster than the old sl6. My small hands much nicer, slightly more ergonomic, so it's a real achievement in my book

 So nice tires fast, grippy and durable. A really comfy power saddle love the shape of these saddles and a nice compact shaped alloy handlebar, a shame, perhaps not to have a carbon handlebar, but an easy upgrade down the line either a carbon round handlebar or an aero handlebar. Getting more speed out of this bike - and i mentioned for a super - cast bar tape, which is really thin but grippy, my preference for a thin bar tape, lots of feel through the handlebars but nice and grippy when you're not running with gloves for reference, then this Is a size 56 i'm about centimeters and, apart from a stem being a bit short and a bit too high, it fits me like a glove. If i buy on the bike i fit along a stem, i slam it a little bit

 That'S the only change i make to summarize my thoughts on how the tarmac sl7 rides and performs and handles. I think, in my opinion, it steers closer to an aero road bike like the old venge. It feels much more like that bike in terms of speed and a stiffness and the handling, and sadly it's lost some of the smoothness, some of the compliance of the old sl6, which will matter or not, depending on what you want from your race bike. If it's pure speed and aggression you'll love this bike, if you want a smooth ride, there are better options in my opinion, but it's still a fantastic bike

Specialized Tarmac SL7 Comp Review: The Budget S-Works

 The other way you can get an s-works is to buy a frame set, which costs three thousand. Seven hundred and fifty pounds, but of course there are cheaper ways to get your hands on an sl7 tarmac, i'm going to take you through the range and in time on a tradition, because i can't keep that many numbers in my head at once. I'M going to refer to my notes: the cheapest tarmac sl7 is the expert model which costs 4 750 pounds and has a shimano ultegra di2 group set. It'S got alloy wheels and it weighs a claimed 7

 I suspect that many of you will want a pro model and maybe make selective upgrades to bring it up to spec, but if you want to have the best, obviously it's going to have to be the s works right now there isn't what you might call a Cheap sl7, however, the old sl6 tarmac is sticking around as a model. For now, the cheapest model is the sl6 sport with a shimano 105 hydraulic group set and that costs 2 500 pounds. Finally, the tarmac sl6 comp with altegra is 3250 pounds, so there you have it. The tarmac sl7 is a very serious bicycle for very serious cyclists

 The seat stays the head tube and the fork legs, as a complete package specialized, was really keen to make this bike as light as the outgoing tarmac disc, but as aero as it possibly could be. The result of all this work is that specialized claims that this bike, as a complete package is 45 seconds faster over 40 kilometers than the old tarmac sl6 specialized claim that, despite all of those aero advantages, this frame weighs the same as the outgoing tarmac disc, 800 Grams, that's compared to 960 grams claimed for the venge. Now those weights are for painted size, 56 frames. Apparently i'm sure some of you will be saying, but isn't the trek of under sub 700 grams? No, it's not because that is an unpainted weight

 Seat stays are almost a given on a bike like this. These days it seems, although some like tracks neomonda, don't have drops each days. A lot of manufacturers like this design feature because it's an easy way to add rear end lateral stiffness with some vertical compliance, and also there may be an arrow advantage depending on how they go about it. You will feel the road there's, no question: i'm running a specialized roubaix as a long-termer at the moment, which has the future shock at the front and a massive amount of compliance built into the rear end, because the seat post can flex a huge amount and the Difference is pretty stark between the two bikes, i'm not criticizing the sl7 for being uncomfortable, but if you're thinking of buying a bike like this don't go into it thinking
