 I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade.

5)  I’m pretty much still a beginner, and I was concerned about this too when I got my first real mountain bike. I also wasn’t too sure what kind of riding I wanted to do. I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade

All your suggestions for bikes, things to look for or stay away from in a bike are welcome! Trying to make this a post that can be referenced off of for others too. 


1. How can I know what makes a bike valuable? Is there any easy way to guage how good a part/specs are of a bike? (Besides rhe frame material, thats a given)

2. Can you build bikes yourself like computers to be cheaper or is it a completely different story?

3. I know I don't understand wtf the differences between certain parts are, but what about bike lines? For example Trek Roscoe vs Martin ect. What makes all of the bike lines different, and how can I "know" what they are for? (I can assume the numbers mean how top of the line they are, but also is there a certain point that the best of one line wouldnt be worth it compared to another lines lower model?)

4. This one will be a no brainer for you guys, but because I am a noob I have to ask: How does a $500 hardtail compare to a $1000 hardtail? Sure the parts are better, but *what* makes them better?

5. Branching off of #4, what would be the price range for a beginner? From what I have heard I dont like the idea of a super cheap bike, but I dont know if I can take full advantage of something $1500+

6. Obligitory one: at the moment I like flowy, easy-to-go-fast-on trails/parks. I also think offroading in more technical trails is interesting, but I like the roller coaster feel of bike parks better. I have really thought about the Roscoe 7 but then saw the Stance 29 2 and still dont know which is better for my needs as they both are about the same price (lets ignore my point in #5). People say the Stance is good for beginners but is not meant to be "sent" with, can this be bad? I dont want to break a bike for going too crazy lol.


P.S. I think its also worth saying I have a bike, but its really old with spring suspension and rim brakes. So it was good for the time but I cant adjust the suspension down a lot since I am a lightweight. I have thought about upgrading it, but wanted to see my options of getting a modern bike.

New MTB lover here, I have questions that are asked not so often. (And some that are)

 and then you're gonna have these Bontrager XR Endurance Comp Grips which I really like because they've got a flat portion to them. Nice ergonomic shape to be able to keep your hands nice and comfortable. For breaks this is set up with Tech Rose HD em 276 and then for shifters. this bike is set up with Shimano Psaltis Em 315 7-speed shifter

6 seat post and this Bontrager Arvada saddle and then on the cockpit we're gonna have a 31.8 handlebar. A nice wide handlebar. It's gonna run an alloy 31

 This is also an upgrade over the 2020 model with having the M3 15 rather than the M3 10.  I could have purchased a much, much nicer full suspension for the money I have put down, though that's just my own experience and will not be like yours necessarily. If there's a Marlin 6 available go for it (since it has an air fork), otherwise I'd highly recommend a Vitus Nucleus.

I was thinking about Trek marlin 5 but i figured out i cant do jumps on it. I saw B'twin rockrider st 520s, actually its looking good. So i wanted to ask you before making a mistake. Do you have any mtb suggestions? Do you suggest B'twin 520s?

I'm trying to decide my first mtb.

As the bike is still almost new, it has a "rattling" noise in the front wheel that probably requires some minor adjustments (hopefully at the store they'll be able to check and fix that).

I'm using my Marlin 5 every day for exercising, it makes my daily routine much easier and enjoyable. I have also used it to go biking on some trails, so much fun! 

A significant step up from my previous rides

 I got a M frame and it has the 8x2 gears. Also the hydraulic disc brakes are super efficient.

 But you do get that 32 tooth capacity on this long, caged derailleur and it definitely looks nice, not quite the lightest, though, with that our front derailleur. This is where you can definitely see that Tigra has gotten a pretty big upgrade. You'Ve got the long lever arm and that lever arm. There allows you to really be able to get additional leverage over the front shift and then the wear plate you can see inside it's actually plastic

 With things like the extended arm on the front derailleur down to the real thin and slender lever shape to the Tigre shifters, you can see that it's got a lot of trickle-down technology. That really helps it be a great group set now in this review. We'Re going to take a look at all of the parts here, you'll notice that we don't have brakes, but we do get the chance to take a look at the derailers. The cassette crank set as well as shifters, now to start off with the shifters

 So this piece is re replaceable. So that way as you've ride and no doubt are gon na cross gear, you don't wear out the entire derailleur. You can actually replace that part now, taking a look at the crank set. The crank set goes to their new asymmetric four bolt, but on the back side, you'll see you get the chain rings that are stamped and then have this kind of plastic insert that's in there, which is where you're getting all the shift grams

 So, instead of the stock 50T large chainring,  consider a 46T, which will be a better fit for knobbies and the typical places you'd want to ride them. At typical cross race speeds, you'll get a lot more use out of a 46T ring than a 50T, and having a 46T large chainring will make this a much more capable machine on road rides than it would be with a 1X, because of the smaller gaps on this cassette as compared to the one you'd probably use on a 1X set up.

I'm trying to figure out exactly what I need to purchase to convert [this bike](https://salsacycles.com/bikes/archive/2019_warroad_carbon_tiagra_650) to a 1x setup.  Right now I'm eyeing SRAM Apex but honestly don't know if that is the best way to go or not and what exactly I need to purchase to get the job done. 

For instance, do I need new brake levers, or will what I have on there now (Shimano Tiagra) still work?  Do I need a whole new bottom bracket?  Etc.  I'm lost. 

If it helps, I'm planning on using this bike for Cyclocross and Gravel riding.

Converting Salsa Warroad 650b Tiagra 2x to 1x

 So I have you guys, tried the new T: Agra 4700. I know it's been out for about a year or two we're only just upgrading it now and, like I said, we're pretty happy with it, but I'd love to hear what you guys think is this the best value in quote: unquote: adventure road shifters on the market.  I will take a 36 tooth in the back. I think overall, I'm generally really pleased with this new shifter and rear derailleur. I think it adds a lot more usability to the warbird. It'S kind of transformed the bike from less of a pure gravel racing machine into a exploratory bike, packing machine now that it has lower gearing

 So what this means essentially is now you can run what used to be the standard mountain bike, a set in the rear, but have rode shifting. Of course now you know the big rage is getting up to a 42 tooth cassette, but hey. I will take a 36 tooth in the back. I think overall, I'm generally really pleased with this new shifter and rear derailleur

If you're looking for information and inspiration all about bike touring by packing in bike fishing and definitely subscribe, this channel is for you so about a month ago I upgraded our shifters and rear derailleurs on our salsa warbird, the 2016 warbird to respect with older tegra. I don't know if you remember them, but they're, big and bulbous. They also had the cables that kind of popped out the sides down to the front of the bike

This bike took a ton of work and knowing what I know now, I probably would have just waited for bikes to come back in stock rather than starting this project last summer. There are some blemishes here and there, but the coolness factor mostly covers them up, so I’m pretty pleased with the result. I’ve learned a lot along the way.  All these issues might sound pretty trivial, because, basically, all components have those things that i just mentioned, but coming from someone with 10 year old components, those things made a massive difference. My old rear cassette was a 12 to 25 to 8 speed, sun race cassette, and this new tiger one goes from 11 to 26, with pretty much the same intervals. But on top of that it's got a low 30 tooth cog and a 34 tooth cog got two lower gears just to help me get up those steep hills which is just so nice the gear changing on it is so precise. It'S mental i've never experienced anything like it before you just press the lever and it's almost like a button

 I had to get them in different places because you can't seem to get the full group set at the moment. I don't know why, but everywhere seems to be sold out, so i had to get each component from a different shop. So i can't really give you an accurate price, because you really have to shop around to get the parts and the prices seem to very massively. I think the recommended retail prices would be somewhere around the 550 mark, but i know that wiggle and chain reaction we're selling them at 290, but they're completely out of stock everywhere

 So, like the levers, the crank, the rear, derailleur and i just think that looks so much smarter and just looks way more, like professional, a lot less like beginnery really. I suppose i also really like the fact that the up and down shift is on the levers here so like that, because before on the old levers, i had they had these weird little tabs up here on on the on the shifters themselves and if you're on The drops and like you were breaking at the end of the hill and you wanted to change up or down gear. You had to like, take your hands off the drops and put them back up here, and so that means you can only really break with one hand for that split moment and even hands up there. It'S always so awkward as well, and i think it was actually probably safer to have the gear changes on the on the down tube compared to up on the top
