Finding the Right Backpack
For extended trips into the backcountry, there's no getting around the fact that you'll have to carry life-sustaining supplies on your back. Here are some things to keep in mind when shopping for a backpack:

Internal vs. External
Up until late 1970's, external frame packs--which consist of an exposed, lightweight metal frame attached to a fabric pack-bag--were the only thing going. In recent years, though, packs that place the support structure of the pack inside the pack, known as internal frame packs, have boomed in popularity.

 The good news about internal frame packs is that they hold the weight of your load close to your body, making it easier to maintain your balance on uneven terrain. Meanwhile, internals provide stiffness and support, but they are not completely rigid, which makes them more flexible when you're doing active sports. With the added flexibility comes a high degree of compressibility, meaning you can use the pack's compression straps to cinch down your load and keep items from shifting and throwing you off balance. Internals also sport slimmer shapes that allow for more arm movement in all directions--another big plus for off-trail bushwhackers, skiers and climbers. Last but not least, internal frame packs offer a greater range of adjustability in the shoulder harness and hip-belt than external frame packs.

 There are some negatives for internals. First, once packed, it can be difficult to grab needed items out of them quickly. And because internal frame packs consolidate the load into a single, body-hugging unit, proper packing is very important. To distribute the weight properly, you should pack your heaviest items close to your back and in the middle portion of the pack-bag. Plan on getting a sweaty back with an internal, too, given the fact that they are pressed right against you. Finally, internal frame packs are priced higher than external models.

 External frame packs are very good at focusing the weight of a load directly to the right place: your load-loving hips. While internals, when properly packed, do this effectively, too, you can always rest assured that an external will distribute the load evenly, no matter how unevenly packed it may be. Externals also offer easy access to your gear via multiple, easily-accessible compartments. Plus, because externals don't situate the load directly against your back, you'll enjoy far more air flow. Finally, if you're on a budget, or you're buying for a growing child, externals are more affordable.

 If you plan on hiking on easy to moderate trails and you don't need a lot of body movement, you'll probably be fine with an external. But because externals are so rigid and inflexible, challenging trails or any kind of off-trail pursuit can become painful and frustrating. Also know that your balance is far more compromised with an external frame pack during activities like stream crossings and hops through talus fields.

Packs for Shorter Trips
In addition to backpacks designed for overnight trips, rucksacks are great for day-trips, warm-weather one-nighters, single-day ski trips, or fast alpine assaults. Some rucksacks blur the line between backpack and rucksack with integrated internal supports and sophisticated hip belts and shoulder harnesses. Choose a pack in this category based on your intended use. Short day hikers don't need an internal frame, while climbers and skiers with heavier loads likely do.

Sizes and Capacities
Packs in the 3,000 cubic inches and lower category are good for day hikes or overnighters in warm weather with minimal gear. Packs in the 3,000 to 4,000 cubic inch range are good for one- or two-night trips in colder weather. If you're going to be out for up to three days, look for a pack in the sub-4,000 cubic inch range. Choose a pack with 5,000-6,000 cubic inches for week-long outings. And finally, for trips lasting a week or more, you'll need something in the 6,000-plus cubic inch category. Keep in mind, though, that bigger packs weigh more, and since every ounce counts, you'll want to choose a pack that offers just enough space for your outings and no more.

So a 10 liter difference, or basically the amount of food and clothing that you'd usually bring and never end up using to begin with anyway, so you can get a good understanding on how large each one of these packs actually is. I'll perform a simple test, All right. So for this test, I'll be packing the Explorer 4000 full of items that I'd usually bring on a two or three day backpacking trip

 I got good news for you and I got bad news. The good news is that I've hiked over 100 kilometers with each one of them. And the bad news is that, well, I've hiked only 100 kilometers with each one. Many people have used these packs for years, which means that they probably know all the little quirks and flaws in these packs, some that only develop over time

 Not too much, but if you're trying to keep the base weight down, it's actually pretty significant in size. The Explorer 4000 is a bit longer and a bit wider. On paper this one is 65 liters and this one is 55 liters. So a 10 liter difference, or basically the amount of food and clothing that you'd usually bring and never end up using to begin with anyway, so you can get a good understanding on how large each one of these packs actually is

 I'll perform a simple test, All right. So for this test, I'll be packing the Explorer 4000 full of items that I'd usually bring on a two or three day backpacking trip. So I've selected a tent, a winter sleeping bag, a winter sleeping pad, a sleeping pillow, a rain jacket, thermal clothing, a fleece, jackets, first aid kits, dried meals for three days, trekking poles, saw your pouches, water bottles, some cooking stuff, a wallet, a power bank, water filter, bug spray, head lamp, and sunglasses. I Do want to take just a second to say thank you to Teton Sports They were in a giveaway on their social media Facebook and Twitter and I answered their question and they selected me to win this backpack. So that is a big push for bad night to start this new adventure of backpacking

 So things that I have a 15 degree sleeping bag and a stuff sack, a set of clothes, a gloves and glove liner, rain gear, a hydration pack which we haven't even opened yet self inflating um camp pad or sleeping bag I can't pillow Trekker has to go mascot has to be with you GPS and compass and some camera gear and I had to see my backpack so flipper so we're gonna put this on the pack and then fit the pack to me. cigarette forfeiting. We followed the instructions on the frequently asked questions on Teton Sports fitting guide so we did a measurement of my back following those instructions and the measure movie came up with was 17 inches and so this is super flat rope strap and yet this is very easily moved up and down and then adjusted here. I Needed 17 inches so I went from the middle of Whoops Little a back strap down to the middle of the waist belt and then you just recover and then we're good to put it on

 It's got padded shoulder straps as well as a padded waist belt and padded lumbar on the side. Here it has zippered pockets on both sides and in quick access pockets as well. On the front, it has a quick access pocket here and a sleeping bag pouch down here at the bottom. It also comes with a range shell

 It's got most of the uh things that just they're not very good quality. The pads are reasonably comfortable, they're fairly thick in size, but the belt. The waist belt at the bottom is simply a strap and that just doesn't work. Just doesn't Uh, doesn't seem to work for transferring the weight from the pack down to your body, to your legs and your hips

That's right, Backpacks Probably one of the more important pieces of gear you're going to buy for your hiking kits, so let's get into it. Okay folks. So the first backpack I bought was this me way 42 liter backpack and I added on those two green pouches here on the sides and I added these two pouches here on the front and I added a water bottle holder on the side and all totaled

 Still a great pack and one that I imagine I'll continue to use for a couple more years before I plan on upgrading.

 I really wish they made those pockets expand more. Also this size will make them impossible to carry larger circumference bottles in them. They really need to make the elastic water bottle pockets a little larger.  Second is the front mesh pocket

I purchased this pack when I was just getting into backpacking and didn't want to spend a ton of money as I wasn't sure how much I would be doing this. Well I've now done over 100 miles with this pack over several trips and I love this pack! While I've changed and upgraded other gear, I have no thoughts on upgrading my pack any time soon. It just is solid and while on the heavy side (the only reason I'll probably upgrade at some point) the features you get are perfect for my use personally.  I've used this pack now in all seasons and from overnighters to six day five night treks

.  First the side pockets for water bottles are simply too small. When my main compartment is full, only a smart water bottle sized bottle will fit and even then it's a very tight squeeze. As I utilize my side pockets and they are stuffed, they get in the way of a one liter bottle a little

  And so, without trying it out beforehand, I pulled the trigger on this before a recent trip.  I don't regret it. This is a solid pack that was pleasantly comfortable and versatile, and it is just a bargain.  The good: * Solid construction

 * Even though all the zippers are solid and work smoothly, the odd curved zip opening for the side pouches and sleeping bag compartment means that using the zips can be awkward and clumsy. Special tip: rub the zip teeth with some candle wax to help it move more smoothly. * Other than the two side bags, there aren't any other exterior pouches. In place of a front pouch there is a very small mesh holder that's really not suitable for anything of substance at all

 Some folks reported problems with poor stitching, loose clips, faulty zips, and other things. As soon as the pack arrived I did a close inspection and all seams, straps, zips, clips, etc are solid and secure. * The pack is quite comfortable. The adjustable torso length makes this very customizable, and the thick padding on shoulders and hips means there is little strain

  The ugly: * No side compression straps. This is not only baffling, but does matter if you have a loosely packed bag. Compression straps do wonders for keeping things in place and quiet. Not having side compression straps just doesn't make sense

 * The pack is quite comfortable. The adjustable torso length makes this very customizable, and the thick padding on shoulders and hips means there is little strain. Add load lifters at the top and some cinch straps on the hips and this bag can be fine-tuned so that a three day trip with over 20 miles of hike was quite easy. * The 55l volume (not including the sleeping bag compartment) is ample

Great pack for the price, but lacking a few really important features.

 So that will get you between two and four days roughly of backpacking is what your expectation is. There is a hydration sleeve and it's hydration ready, but there is no hydration reservoir that comes with it, but you can add one here if you want a deck that'll get you up to 3 liters in that hydration sleeve. I Go with a 2.5 that seems to work for me
