If you are hoping for a more affordable rooftop option, the Smittybilt Overlander is a great choice. It is one of the most spacious and comfortable tents we have used and has enough overhead space to allow campers to easily change clothes or comfortably sit up and enjoy the view from one of its many windows. Included perks like an LED light strip and hanging boot bag on the outside of the tent make it more livable and pleasant to use for longer trips. The ladder is extra wide and feels sturdy when bringing gear, kids, or pets up to roof level for the night. And don't let the lower price tag fool you into questioning the quality of this tent. The Overlander is built with durable 600D polyurethane material to weather gnarly storms.
The lower price tag is likely due to a do-it-yourself assembly and installation. The initial installation of this Smittybilt is more complicated than average. The tent itself is pretty heavy, and it only comes with a very basic tool kit. Most of the components come unassembled, and the whole thing just takes more time to complete. Once you have the tent properly mounted, converting it from travel mode to camping mode also takes longer than average, although luckily, it is not too difficult. Our final gripe with this tent is that there is no convenient place to store the travel cover. It removes completely from the tent, which means you must find a place to fold and store it instead of rolling it up and letting it hang from the side of the tent as in other models. However, if you are prepared to devote a little more time to set up and tear down on each trip, the Smittybilt Overlander is an excellent way to adventure on a tighter budget.

Though the Smittybilt Overlander is a more moderaly priced option for those on a budget, but it still comes with several included extras. It arrives with a very cool LED light system that includes 12-volt extension cords that go all the way from the tent to your 12-volt cigarette lighter or an external USB battery pack. Another added feature is the included rubber boot bag that hangs outside of the tent, which is very convenient in poor weather conditions. It also has the widest, sturdy ladder of any tent we tested.
These perks aside, the Smittybilt does have a few weaknesses. It's cumbersome &mdash; weighing in at 144 pounds, it is substantially heavier than many of the tents we tested. You also may need to drill holes to get your ladder in the proper location, depending on the height of your vehicle's rooftop. Drilling metal isn't the easiest task to take on, even if you have the correct tools, and taking power tools to a brand new product is a bit unnerving. Also, the cover must be removed entirely to convert the tent from travel mode to camping mode. With all of the other models in this lineup, the cover either rolled up or was able to be tucked out of the way. Still, while this tent might require a bit more effort, it will save you a sizeable amount of money and still perform at a very respectable level.

 Today we're going to be talking about rooftop tents and more specifically the Smittybelt Overlander XL. There are so many tent options from swags to ground tents, even sleeping in a hammock when you're going out and camping and overlanding, but nothing really is as comfortable in my opinion as a rooftop tent. Rooftop tents give you a nice flat surface to sleep on. Many of them come with a foam mattress, high-density foam mattress inside and the Smittybelt Overlander XL is perfect for us in our size family

 Just depends on your setup and how much you're opening up or not. The Smittybelt Overlander XL is a budget-friendly tent. Well, I say budget-friendly. It all depends on the budget that you have, right? So you can opt for a hammock or a ground tent

 So that is a downfall to me. The next downfall is the retractable aluminum ladder. This thing is horrible. Now they have come out with a new telescopic ladder, which is so much better, but this one on this tent is ridiculous

 We'll start with what I like. I love that it's a rooftop tent. I don't have to worry about sleeping on the hard, uneven ground, worrying about sleeping pads, sleeping bags and animals, insects, all that kind of stuff. Being able to sleep up high on a flat, comfortable surface with a five-inch mattress is super, super nice

 it can be hard to maybe decide which one to choose. Today we're going to be doing

 a long-term review of the Smittybelt Overlander XL rooftop tent. Stay tuned.

 Hi my name is Aaron and I want to welcome you to this episode of Big Man Overland. Today we're

 going to be talking about rooftop tents and more specifically the Smittybelt Overlander XL. There

 are so many tent options from swags to ground tents, even sleeping in a hammock when you're

 going out and camping and overlanding, but nothing really is as comfortable in my opinion

 as a rooftop tent. Rooftop tents give you a nice flat surface to sleep on. Many of them come with a

 foam mattress, high-density foam mattress inside and the Smittybelt Overlander XL is perfect for

 us in our size family. This tent sleeps four to five. Now I wouldn't say that it sleeps four to

 five comfortably, but it does sleep four to five. When we have our tent set up it's really just me

 and my wife in the tent and then Smittybelt does have an annex that can attach to it and that's

 where our children sleep. The Smittybelt has a nice aluminum durable platform that attaches to

 a roof rack system. It's also made of a very durable 600d waterproof ripstop poly, comes with

 a rain fly, as well as a retractable aluminum ladder. The Smittybelt Overlander XL tent does

 have two mesh windows and two mesh entrances. However, the back entrance or what I call the

 rear entrance acts really just as a large mesh window that allows for really great wind flow

 cross breeze through the tent. Now this tent does include a two-inch high-density foam mattress. Now

 the foam mattress is great. However, it's not that comfortable so we opted to add another two and a

 half inch memory foam mattress topper to it. This gives us almost five inches of mattress plus we

 lay down sleeping bags, blankets, whatever else there might be. So it really does allow for a

 really comfortable sleep at night which as you know when you're out camping sleep can be very

 hard to come by. So this is almost like sleeping in a hotel which is so nice. Setup is really easy.

 It probably takes five maybe ten minutes maximum when you're staking the fly down and things like

 that. When you put it away, it takes about the same amount of time. Just depends on your setup

 and how much you're opening up or not. The Smittybelt Overlander XL is a budget-friendly

 tent. Well, I say budget-friendly. It all depends on the budget that you have, right? So you can opt

 for a hammock or a ground tent. You're going to spend 100 bucks or less. This you're looking at

 around $1,000. Now in comparison with other rooftop tents, that's actually really affordable.

 Other rooftop tents can go to $2,000, $3,000 and up. It gets pretty dang pricey. If you're only

 going camping two, three, four times a year, this is a really great option for you. However,

 if you're going more consistently and going for longer periods of time, you may want to go for

 a different tent, hard shell that sets up and tears down anywhere within 60 to 90 seconds.

 Now here's what I like and don't like about this rooftop tent. We'll start with what I like. I love

 that it's a rooftop tent. I don't have to worry about sleeping on the hard, uneven ground,

 worrying about sleeping pads, sleeping bags and animals, insects, all that kind of stuff. Being

 able to sleep up high on a flat, comfortable surface with a five-inch mattress is super,

 super nice. It feels like you're sleeping in a hotel when you're out in the middle of the woods.

 Another thing that I like is that it sets up and tears down fairly quickly. I mean,

 looking at around 15 minutes, which isn't awful, some ground tents can take up to that long,

 depending on the size of your tent. That is a really nice feature as well. Now what I don't

 like, I don't like that it takes 10 to 15 minutes to set up and tear down each time. That's so much

 in comparison to other rooftop tents. So that is a downfall to me. The next downfall is the
