So I'm excited to get to experiment with these more over time and experience everything they have to offer.  Hey what's up guys, Austin here. So I just recently got some new in-ear monitors that I'm pretty excited about.

 Now they're not custom, I wasn't quite ready to venture into that world yet,

 but these are arguably one of the best universal fit monitors on the market,

 and that is the Shure SE846. So let's take a look at them and see what they're all about.

 So these are the top of the line in-ears that Shure makes and it's pretty clear from their

 presentation that these represent the pinnacle of Shure's engineering and expertise. They're

 the only model in the SE line that features quad drivers with a frequency response from 15 hertz,

 which is quite low, up to 20k, and Shure describes them as an earphone with true subwoofer performance.

 So after my initial listening sessions, I think it's safe to say that these are definitely the

 best sounding in-ears I've ever experienced. They're actually quite neutral out of the box,

 which is great for me since I'll be using them a lot for mixing and monitoring,

 but one of the cool features about these is that you can alter the EQ slightly with these

 removable filters in this interesting tool. They ship with the neutral filters pre-installed,

 but you can swap those out for the white ones, which boost the high end by 2.5 dB between 1 to 8k,

 giving you a brighter sound, while the black ones cut the high end by 2.5 dB,

 resulting in a warmer sound. So having that ability to alter the sound signature a little bit

 is really a unique feature that you don't see in any of the other SE models.

 They also include a ton of accessories, such as this large hardshell case,

The noise cancelling however isn’t as great as the more expensive headphones and same goes for comfort. They are very light but not as comfortable as I would like them to be. But yeah I’d say close to audiophile level sound (I own a pair of Shure SE846 IEMs and Audeze LCD1 open backs so I think I can tell what sounds good).

Moving along, Shure includes an inline volume adapter that connects to end of the cable and then to whatever 3.5mm jack you wish, a &frac14;-inch headphone jack adapter, an airline jack adapter, a shirt clip, a cleaning cloth, a small zip-up case, and the large, clear plastic hard shell case. Notably, none of the included cables has an inline remote control or microphone for mobile devices. That is listed in the cons above, because I had to think of something to put in that space&mdash;but most of the people reading this review won't likely be buying the SE846 to make or receive phone calls

 The SE846 wins our Editors' Choice, meaning that if you have the money, you now have some tough decisions to make between this model, the fantastic Sennheiser IE 800($549.99 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) (read on for a head-to-head comparison), or a custom-molded option. Nice problem to have, my friend.

 Notably, none of the included cables has an inline remote control or microphone for mobile devices. I wouldn't think it would be a deal-breaker for anyone serious about potentially buying this pair.

The SE846 has a more dizzying array of accessories, and its cable is fully detachable, while the IE 800's cable has a disconnection point, but each earpiece's cabling is hardwired until the cables combines at the disconnection point. The earpieces for the IE 800 are smaller and lighter, however, and armed with some of the best eartips we've ever seen, with a secure fit and a mesh filter that makes them very easy to clean&mdash;they can even be cleaned in water. Still, the SE846's fit, while it may feel almost invasive compared to the casual, secure fit of the lightweight IE 800, seems to achieve a more palpable bass response, and I think a little of this has to do with how much more intensely it seals off your canals&mdash;you feel its presence, while with the lightweight IE 800, you forget it's there.

 So when I wrote the written review on this thing, I admit I definitely went about it the wrong way. I went for the balanced nozzle and the silicone ear tips, thinking they would give me kind of the most neutral, unaffected view of, you know, the tone of the SE846. But that is completely antithetical to the point of the SE846. You're supposed to be mixing and matching everything that they give you in there

 Aside from that, the SE 846 second generation features four balanced armature drivers, a frequency response of 15 Hertz to 20 kilohertz, and a pretty low impedance of 9 ohms. This distinct ovular shape of the buds that you see actually serves a pretty impressive utility, providing up to negative 37 decibels of passive isolation. I have to say it's pretty noticeable once you get the fit right. The exterior and interior box alike have a professional audio look that reminds me of the microphones that sure sells a little more than the headphones

 I think that's extended. That's like one kilohertz to eight kilohertz gets like a little boost. So yeah, using the extended with these yellow foam tips, that was a very big difference from how I was listening to these for the written review. So if you get this, have fun with it, because it's through the mixing and the matching that you're going to come across a sound that you really, really like

 The bass was there, but it was a little more growly. It was a little more concentrated in the mid bass, kind of the case of a bass that you can hear, but you don't really feel these foam tips really brought the rumble out of these.
