By cinching and uncinching the laces, these shoes are quick to put on and take off, convenient to swiftly shake out any intruding sediment, and easy to manage when getting in and out of a tent. We love how confident our footwork feels thanks to the deep-set lugs on the outsole and what a difference solid waterproofing, thanks to a Gore-Tex membrane, can make to our hiking comfort. For all of these attributes, it is surprising that the X Ultra 4 GTX shoes come in at such a low weight, a measly 1.76 pounds. This new iteration of a well-known and well-regarded classic shaves off nearly a quarter pound per pair. As a bonus, the price tag is moderate compared to the other options available. 
We quite like the convenience of the Quicklace system, although we recognize that it is not everyone's cup of tea. When stowed away in their pouch, they give much less tripping hazard than laces, though we sometimes found ourselves lazily tucking them back into the laces. Over time the tab extending from the ankle of the shoe wears down, and it is a bit annoying to constantly pull it back out once we pull the shoes on. Additionally, the first time we wore these shoes, we noticed that the ankle cuff is slightly higher than on most hikers in our line-up. To reduce ankle rub, we wore thinner socks and then had no further issues. Compared to the top shoes we've tested, though, our testers are convinced that this is the most full-package, low-cut hiker on the market and readily recommend it as the best option available.

 We guess the reason behind that is the long period of abuse of the X Ultra 4 on the hard surfaces all the time, whereas the XA Pro 3D was being used on the road or sidewalk and has smaller lugs.We found that the Salomon XA Pro 3D is as heavy as hiking shoes.  The only issue that i have with the highness hiking will do, if i go backpacking here in arkansas, is because it can get pretty rocky. This does not have a ton of ankle support and for a lot of people, that's not an issue if i'm not backpacking or carrying a heavy load. It'S really not an issue for me, but i have twisted my ankles too many times to count just in in hiking, and so what i'll do is typically i'll have either an ankle brace that i'll wear with it or i love high-top shoes and i'm going backpacking Big time, but other than that, these these are going to be my go-to hikers. Even if um, i usually have done like the lone peaks for, like the trail running shoes that i've been wearing um, these are kind of a good fit in between, like a good heavy hiking boot versus a trail running shoe, which is much lighter

 This back here make sure that usually, when i get a lot of low tops here, i get a little bit of dirt will get in because of it, but also it prevents rubbing on the back of my achilles a lot um. They they're super like non-stick slip. They they do such a good job at not slipping on stuff. I was like impressively, i guess i'm so impressed with them uh and then another feature that i really didn't test that much at the badlands, where we were able to when we got back was the waterproofing

 They even have when you see here a little place where you can tuck the laces in after you get them pulled tight. They fit so snug and i have a narrow foot and that's usually a big problem that i have with getting shoes like this is because they don't fit snug.  I don't know what the 4s are made of, but they have a horrible smell. I don't usually have smelly feet. My 3s never smelled. My 4s are shoes that I don't want to keep indoors when not on

I have had three pairs of X Ultra 3s before this pair of X Ultra 4s. In numerous ways, the 3s are better than the 4s. First and foremost, the 3s are more comfortable than the 4s. Both start out stiff, but after a month or two, the 3s become flexible and are far more comfortable

I have been wearing the Salomon Ultra daily for years now. My old ones were getting very worn so I ordered the new X Ultra 4 GTX. The fit is terrible. I cannnot believe that they have actually built these as a product

 Very narrow and the arch is in the wrong position. I have been using Salomon for years now. The new Quest 4 and Mid fit fine but something is fundamentally wrong with the new design of the shoes. I have now gone with Scarpa and Keen which are great replacements

Devastated - Awful fit, bring back the old design!

 Those shoes are comfy, give good support and will stay on your feet very snugly. They are completely waterproof, but also breathable enough, and also the outsole gives a lot of grip and comfort on dry terrain. On the flip side, construction of the outsole, also it's not optimal for wet stones, so keep that in mind. Cost of the profitability is that the durability might be potentially reduced, and that is something to keep in mind

They really keep your feet snug in the place without over tightening

If you ever had been descending the mountain and had to do heel lock with your laces to protect your toes, then you know how big relief it is to take them off. Those shoes never gave me any problems like that

 I didn't had any issues with that after initial break in which took me one or two trips, they become really really comfortable and i could easily use them every day for anything on first use, the feeling of putting your feet into them was like orthopedic shoes, but That quickly have molded to my feet and since then they are absolutely delightful to use a lot of people, i know, buy the hiking shoes, half or full size up to protect their feet and especially toes on the standing of the mountain. Those shoes are half size up, as i said before, even without over tightening them, they've been really comfortable, not only when i was ascending, but also when i was descending the mountains without getting too much into technicalities, the outsole is made of contact grip ma, which is Technology developed by salomon and i felt safe in those shoes on all kinds of terrain, on doing scrambling and even very, very technical, scrum. Well technical. For me, those shoes were very good: they've been holding to the rocks or sand or wet grass or mood very well

Good shoe but very slim fit

Overall -  Could be a great shoe but build quality and design improvements requirement.

Pros - good support, good heal lock, relatively light weight, great sole and grip in a variety of conditions with self cleaning lugs, quick lacing system very convenient.

Cons - build quality not up to the mark, outer fabric developed a whole after 5/6 weeks of use along the flexing point, gore-tex not that breathable during spring walks, some water ingress after walking through wet grass, the housing to store the lacing system on the tongue needs to be better design to make more useful with less conflict with the laces when the shoe is in use.

Potentially a great walking show

On a positive note, these are great winter shoes. Good grip on ice, waterproof and keep my feet warm and dry.

 This pair seems to be rather large. I have to crank them as tight as possible and they still feel a little too big. Would like to try a half size down.

 While these shoes look great, these are rebranded Merrells, which always run narrow and never seem to fit my feet well. The insoles are also hard with little padding, although you can replace these. I had worn them on a few hikes, but with Eddie Bauer's guarantee policy I was able to return them for a refund. Not saying these won't work for someone else, but the didn't work for me
