For many, looks and aerodynamics are key purchasing factors. If you want an ultra-thin rooftop tent that still houses a super comfy mattress, we recommend the Roofnest Falcon 2. At only 6" tall in travel mode, this model is about half the thickness of every other model in our review and is as easy as it gets when converting from travel to camp mode. Open a couple of latches, and let the hydraulic pistons do the rest. When it comes time to switch back to travel mode, the Falcon 2 only takes a few more seconds to fold up than the fastest models we've tested. While in camping mode, this tent has tons of storage, including several pockets around the tent, a large pocket array on the roof of the tent, and two boot bags that hang outside to keep your grubby shoes out of the sleeping area. It comes with dual USB-powered LED light strips that fully illuminate the whole tent when plugged into a power source. If you so choose, Roofnest has optional crossbars available so that you can store kayaks, paddle boards, or bicycles on top of the Falcon 2. 
Because of the slim profile, there is a lack of storage space while in travel mode with the Falcon 2. The tent shell barely fits the tent and mattress, so you really cannot leave anything inside while traveling other than maybe a summer sleeping bag and a couple of books. This model doesn't even have room for its own ladder, so make sure to consider where you're going to haul these things if you decide to go with this tent. Perhaps the biggest drawback to the Falcon 2 is the price tag. If you want a low-profile state-of-the-art rooftop tent, it will take its toll on your pocketbook.

 I wound up having to climb on top of the tent and put my weight on it to push it together. It's not a huge issue — after all, the ladder makes getting up there easy — but it's certainly not the most dignified method. (Roofnest's explainer video shows an employee shutting it from the ground with ease, suggesting that either my example was an aberration or the company only employs people with super-strength.)

It's well-made. Roofnest's line of tents (they make two others, in addition to the Falcon and Falcon XL) are pitched as premium products, and they certainly look and feel the part, from the sturdy exterior to the thick waterproof canvas skin to the shockingly comfortable memory foam mattress. Roofnest claims it’s able to handle storms and cold weather alike; of course, my night in it was a clear one in balmy July where temperatures barely dipped below 70, so I’ll have to take their word for it.

Throughout testing, the Thule Tepui Kukenam 3 is the model that stood out as the best option for the biggest audience. Thule Tepui has a strong reputation for producing high-quality rooftop tents, and the Kukenam is no exception. The 600-denier cover and 420-denier rain fly &#40;with taped seams&#41; provide reliable waterproofing layers when packed up or deployed and this tent has survived every beating we gave it during testing unscathed. It is made for handling four-season use, and we found no reason to doubt that claim. The Kukenam nails the details, too, the ones that can help make the difference between liking and loving your tent. The memory foam mattress is top-notch, and the interior dimensions are among the most spacious. The attached telescoping ladder makes deployment easy, and the internal bungees are incredibly convenient when breaking camp, keeping the canopy tucked inside the frame nicely. Tepui also includes a ratcheting wrench with each Kukenam for installation atop your vehicle.
We have no major grievances with this model. Being 130 pounds, though, it might require up to three people to install this model on a rooftop. It also has no extras like a boot bag, lights, or an included annex, but these options can be purchased after-market. And while this isn't the most expensive option in our line-up, it does cost more than many. In our opinion, though, Tepui gets the details that most people will care about right. If a friend asks us which softshell rooftop tent to purchase, the Tepui Kukenam is almost always our first recommendation.

 When it is all packed up, it measures 48 by 56 by 12 inches. When it is open, it measures 96 by 56 by 52 inches. Once you get this mounted on your car, you can take it down but probably won’t want to. As you see, it’s quite heavy and large

 One issue that a few people have experienced is poor manufacturing and craftsmanship. In some cases, a piece or a zipper was installed backward. In other cases, there were many small metal shavings left inside the tent, which in turn, caused holes. Luckily, there is a two-year warranty included that insures your item from these types of mishaps

 There are not a lot of frills, but with your car as a storage system below, they are not really necessary. This item is a big investment. It is very expensive, but it is built to last. Make sure you inspect the tent when you receive it and do a couple of test setups to make sure everything is in order

 There are MUCH better models on the market now (albeit for more money - but you get what you pay for here).  Review: I have been an off-roader and deep country backpacker for decades now. I have written for outdoor magazines and done several reviews. I put my gear through it and I expect it to preform

 2. The zipper itself that holds the cover to the base separates, and while some zipper wax has alleviated the problem, it is very clear that this zipper will have to be full replaced relatively soon. 3. The screws that hold the center frame into place fall out under vibration

 The customer service sent bungie cords to help with this (which I have yet to test) but the rainfly is still going to be an issue. Honestly, this makes the entire setup pointless. 7. Ripped tooth - In a mid size windstorm one of the "teeth" the holds the rain fly in place ripped

 Yet another band-aid for a poorly made product. 6. Folding failure - this has to be my biggest complaint. When folding up the tent the fabric doesn't fold properly inside meaning that I have to climb up onto roof of my rig and fight to get it all back in there

Nothing but Problems

 I have it on a 2019 Jeep Cherokee trailhawk on Thule crossbars with stock roof racks and it is solid.

Amazing tent. Arrived with no damage, first night in it I put the rain fly on before bed (thank god) then we had 60km winds and major rain. No leaks and barely any condensation as it has vents built in. Very durable tent and very good quality

Great tent, I absolutely recommend it.

 Do the same for the windscreen as well. Inside the tent, you will find a padded mattress with an anti-condensation mat underneath to help prevent moisture buildup. Large zippered windows with screens are present for when you want to let in some light without letting in the bugs. This tent also has multiple tiered pockets for storage, vents for better air circulation, and two skylights

 The buttons located under the steps of the ladder, when pushed simultaneously, allow you to adjust the ladder further to get the appropriate length. With the tent unfolded, you'll need to insert the supports for the weatherized cover into three locations on both sides of the tent to increase its rigidity. To set up the tent pulls, release the cover on both sides and insert the tent pulls through the seam in the tent into the holes. Repeat the same process to install the tent pulls on the weatherized cover as well for each side

 Today we are doing an unboxing, installation, and product overview on the Thule Tapulee

 This tent is Thule's 3 person offering built for off-road use for your 4x4 trailer or off-road

 The Cucanom 3 is available in two colors, Haze Gray and Olive Green.

 In this video we will be setting up and demonstrating the Haze Gray model.

 This rooftop tent arrives in a large reinforced cardboard box.

 Upon opening the box you will find the tent instructions as well as warranty information.

 As you can see the tent comes out of the box in the folded position mostly pre-assembled.

 Located on the side of the tent wrapped in bubble wrap are the tracks that are used to

 The rest of the hardware and accessories are located inside the tent.

 Release all of the straps and carefully unfold the tent to gain access to the opening.

 Located inside will be 4 things, the tent cover, the telescoping ladder, the tent poles,

 and a bag with the mounting hardware and supplied tools.

 To begin setting up the tent, start by inserting a nut into each side of the track.

 Located on the inside of the tent under the sleeping mat will be a set of 4 holes.

 Insert the bolts with a large washer on them from the inside and place the tracks on the

 Tighten the bolts with a supplied wrench to secure the track to the tent.

 The brackets for the ladder will need to be installed next.

 Thread the bolts from the bottom, add a washer, and tighten them with the wrench.

 To attach the ladder to the brackets, place a washer onto the bolt, set the spacer in

 between the bracket and the ladder, and thread the bolt through the hole.

 Place a nut on the other end and tighten both sides with the wrenches.

 The ladder should be able to move freely when fully tightened.

 Buckle the strap that extends over the ladder to hold it in place.

 To install the cover, slide it into the channel and up and around the tent.

 Zip up the bottom and fasten the straps.

 To install the tent on your crossbars, insert the mounting hardware into the track on the

 Route the bracket under your crossbar and thread a nut onto the end of each bolt.

 Tighten each nut with the supplied wrench.

 You'll need to do this for all four corners until the tent is secure on your crossbars.

 Finally, insert all four end caps into the ends of the tracks.

 To set up the tent with it mounted, you will first need to remove the cover.

 To do so, start by releasing the straps.

 Next, pull the Velcro apart to reveal the zipper.

 Unzip the tent all the way around and pull the cover off the tent.

 Release the straps all around and unfold the tent fully.
