For many, looks and aerodynamics are key purchasing factors. If you want an ultra-thin rooftop tent that still houses a super comfy mattress, we recommend the Roofnest Falcon 2. At only 6" tall in travel mode, this model is about half the thickness of every other model in our review and is as easy as it gets when converting from travel to camp mode. Open a couple of latches, and let the hydraulic pistons do the rest. When it comes time to switch back to travel mode, the Falcon 2 only takes a few more seconds to fold up than the fastest models we've tested. While in camping mode, this tent has tons of storage, including several pockets around the tent, a large pocket array on the roof of the tent, and two boot bags that hang outside to keep your grubby shoes out of the sleeping area. It comes with dual USB-powered LED light strips that fully illuminate the whole tent when plugged into a power source. If you so choose, Roofnest has optional crossbars available so that you can store kayaks, paddle boards, or bicycles on top of the Falcon 2. 
Because of the slim profile, there is a lack of storage space while in travel mode with the Falcon 2. The tent shell barely fits the tent and mattress, so you really cannot leave anything inside while traveling other than maybe a summer sleeping bag and a couple of books. This model doesn't even have room for its own ladder, so make sure to consider where you're going to haul these things if you decide to go with this tent. Perhaps the biggest drawback to the Falcon 2 is the price tag. If you want a low-profile state-of-the-art rooftop tent, it will take its toll on your pocketbook.

 I wound up having to climb on top of the tent and put my weight on it to push it together. It's not a huge issue — after all, the ladder makes getting up there easy — but it's certainly not the most dignified method. (Roofnest's explainer video shows an employee shutting it from the ground with ease, suggesting that either my example was an aberration or the company only employs people with super-strength.)

It's well-made. Roofnest's line of tents (they make two others, in addition to the Falcon and Falcon XL) are pitched as premium products, and they certainly look and feel the part, from the sturdy exterior to the thick waterproof canvas skin to the shockingly comfortable memory foam mattress. Roofnest claims it’s able to handle storms and cold weather alike; of course, my night in it was a clear one in balmy July where temperatures barely dipped below 70, so I’ll have to take their word for it.

The quality of the fabric and materials are good. For a couple more hundred bucks i could’ve upgraded to the gen2, but did not know until i got this xl tent but hey it was on sale, plus i needed it early on this year before the crowd. So far i liked it, just needed to upgrade to telescoping ladder, and maybe a see thru rainfly on the top. Kept us warm inside with 30-40 deg temps at night

Didnt know about the Gen 2 till i got this one

 Not really suited for someone over 6’. I’m 5’9” and it fits me with room. It’s cheap material and needs careful care to not damage. Get a mattress topper if you are a side sleeper or have bones in your body

I’d buy again

I installed tent and was so happy till I went to put away and found they sent small cover not xl well can’t drive it as it needs the cover and it’s going to rain. I called smittybilt they said they knew this was an issue but had no covers but would see what they could do and would call back in no more than 2 hrs after 4 hrs I called back and was told they will have one to me “soon”.UPDATE: they have sent out a correct cover. Hope the tent held up under the tarp till it gets here

 We sleep up top and have room to stretch out and have our bags up there as well. I’m 6’-04” and she is 5’-10” and it’s perfect. We have been in other RTTs and they would be ok to sleep in but no room for bags. We like that so we don’t have to go back and forth to the car

 It’s a maze to walk through the annex when they are there but it works. This tent is amazing for the price. We eventually want to move to a hard shell RTT but this one has been great and a fourth of the cost of the hard shell we want. We love the Velcro LEDS that come with the tent and the quality is great

Mostly good, the aluminum u-bar to hold out for entrance buckles in rain storm had to make new one. Have had this for 2 camping seasons now and the straps to hold it together while stowed are all frayed and had to be replaced dont believe they were weather proof. Did add an extra 3" memory foam pad to sleep more comfortably. All in all a good tent and would purchase again

Great tent , needs better quality straps

  Edit (9/16/16): We have camped out in the tent once in the backyard to try it out before we take it on a long trip. We have had the tent setup for about 2 weeks so the girls can play in it and we can make sure it can "weather" a decent storm. It had stayed dry through 4-5 heavy rain storms with winds gusting 25-35 knots.  Also, we figured out how to remove the rainfly so it is for sure removeable

 Design is good. I can’t imagine it being able to withstand the stated weight rating, but my family is all on the skinny and short side, so I don’t foresee an issue. Glad I went with the XL. Although I know Smittybilt does not recommend these for vehicle top mount (they say for only trailer use nowadays), it fits great on the top of my LR Discovery 2, and I don’t feel like the added weight up top will be that terrible

Possibly the best value in roof tents

This tent is huge, I have a 2017 Tacoma long bed and it fits just right on there. If you have the short bed, this will be too big The inside is huge, we have taken it camping several times and I feel like 4 people can easily fit in there. Two adults and a German Shepherd slept in there just fine. The ladder is a little funky, when you open it up the side that sits on the ladder side feels really weak
