Even lower-cost hitch racks can still be pretty expensive, but we recently discovered a new hitch-mount rack that we feel is an excellent value: the RockyMounts MonoRail. It costs a significant amount less than the highest-priced hitch racks, yet it provides similar features and performance. Like most great platform racks, the MonoRail holds the bike by the wheels, so there is no frame contact. It offers a high level of versatility, with well-designed wheel trays and the included ladder strap extenders that can handle everything from skinny road tires up to 5-inch fat bike behemoths. Testers were also impressed with this rack's user-friendliness, including a one-hand tilt release mechanism at the end of the main support arm that can be used with bikes loaded. It comes with a long noose-style cable lock and hitch pin lock that secures both the rack and the bikes it carries.
The MonoRail appears very well made with a sturdy metal receiver arm, main support arm, and bike trays. However, there is a fair amount of plastic in its construction, including both the folding front wheel and pivoting rear wheel trays, which could pose durability issues if used carelessly. It also employs a standard threaded hitch pin to attach the rack to receiver on your vehicle. Although this works just fine, it's far less user-friendly than the tool-free tightening and locking designs found on some of the competition. Regardless, we feel the MonoRail is an excellent rack that performs above its asking price.

I was having an issue with the hanging type bike rack where the bikes dangle from metal posts. My bike, Trek hardtail, would mount with no problem and pretty much stay in place whereas my wife’s, Schwinn girly bike, would bounce all over the place. The reason why hers would not stay in place was it required a special arm that attached to the seat post and the handlebar. I constantly had to stop and reposition wherever we went

Better than the hanging bike rack types

I am giving this 5 stars for now as I have had the rack since June of '17. It works as advertised, easy to load bikes on without having multiple lock downs. Holds my mountain bike securely and has very minimal wobble. It is a bit heavy, but no more than other racks I have used

  Today 9/27 while I was removing it from my car, the locking nut inside the hitch tube that allows you to secure the rack to your car hitch snapped loose, rendering the rack useless. On examination you can tell that it was welded in place very poorly. I have contacted RockyMounts for a solution to fix this issue today and will see how their customer service responds. I will update when I hear back from them

Great Rack, but?

 I used to take the rack off each time I used it, but the threaded bolt makes it difficult to constantly take on and off, so it is on for now. Hopefully nobody steals it, because I can't find hardened locks for the security bolts. In addition to this, the included security loop is pretty flimsy.

 I admit this was user error, since I didn't put the wheel hook right next to the fork, but the instructions don't point this out, which is pretty darn important when carrying expensive bikes at (potentially) highway speeds.  * The security is lacking, and the security locks and bolts aren't standard (You won't be able to find better locks at hardware stores like Ace Hardware). Decent product overall

 My only concern is the two locks. There is one for the hitch pin and one used to secure the bike cable. They do not look solid at all, I bet I could knock them off with a hammer. Other than that, this is a great rack and I'm very happy with it

It is also quite large and it will take up a good amount of storage space when not in use. The 70-pound weight limit will be more than adequate for most users most of the time, although for RV use that limit drops to 60 lbs, and for off-road use, Yakima reduces that limit to 42 lbs per bike. The loading ramp is also an awesome feature for e-bike users, but it is sold separately and will set you back an additional $99 on top of the already high price of the rack. Those concerns aside, this is the best Yakima hitch rack we've ever tested and a highly versatile, heavy-duty option that won't disappoint.

25 inch and a two as well as a charcoal color and this white vapor that we have here. Some of the cool features here are the tool free speed knob which locks it into the hitch and it can actually use the same key to lock it in place. You have integrated cable locks that use that same key system which is what they call the SKS system as well as a tilting design so you can access your hatch. Putting the rack together is pretty straightforward

 The other really nice thing about this rack is the fact that you can move it out of the way so even with the we can grab the handle and then tilt downward so with that for most vehicles you should now have enough space to actually access the back of your hatchback or in our case the bed so you can see a pretty slick setup here you can see another angle of the rack with it tilted downward so you can see plenty of space to actually access cargo tailgate no issues. Then you simply pull up on the rack especially with two bikes on there it is a little bit heavier but definitely manageable and then you're ready to ride again. Now unloading the bike is really simple as well so to unload it you obviously want to unlock it if you have the lock set up so we'll do that first slide it back through then you want to loosen the rear ratchet so simple plastic ratchet and then pull up on the front fork and slide it out of the way. So with that the bike is free and you can pull it off and then go riding

 Now one of the cheaper aspects about the two-stage is this little handle so it's a plastic handle you can see it's already cracked on ours and this allows you to actually adjust the angle so when you want to store it upright you just pull up on this and you can hear the lock and then you can tilt it downward as well. So if you want to access your hatch you can easily do that and then to bring it back up you just and you should hear it lock back into place. So it does feel a little cheap but definitely works and you can also use this again to tilt it upward when you want to put in a storage position. The two-stage also has a number of really nice safety features integrated directly into the rack on each of the tire holders you actually have an SKS cable lock integrated directly into it so they're provided two keys both of them work on the locks so it's the same one for both and with falls inside of the holder so it slides right in when you're not using it and it has a little tab here that holds it in place when you want to use it obviously just pull up on it wrap it through your frame and then wheels if you'd like so it's fairly short and then it has the little hook on the side
