You just flip the front cover of it off, just like that, and you can see it takes three AAA batteries, which they actually include batteries with the pack, so you don't even have to purchase them separately. This is a great starter headlamp that is bright enough for most things you'd need a headlamp for.  Unfortunately, after maybe 100h of total use, the headlamp wouldn't turn on. Replacing the batteries did not help. Eventually I wiggled the inner charging bits and eventually got it to work

 So this is 250 lumens. And I would argue that between the second setting and the third setting, there's not a tremendous difference from my standpoint or my perspective, but it is 250 lumens. You're gonna get a shorter, much shorter burn time than the other two settings. But it is brighter, but it's just, is it noticeably brighter where you would wear it on setting three rather than setting two

 So let's go to the second level. All right, you guys can see that. That is the second power level, which is 100 lumens. And you can see this is pretty bright

It does come with a red flash if you want it and then off. If you kind of leave it on like they're kind of give it a few seconds you can then just turn it straight off.  I want something better than a crappy $5. The nicest one I ever had was REI and I think it was like almost $100, but that was a gift. I really can't justify spending more than $40 or something, especially because these are easy to lose and while the more expensive ones are definitely better, like, how much better can they actually be?  Here's what I like about this one: I like that there are separate buttons for red and white light. Some headlamps make you go through white lights before you get to red, which makes no sense, especially if you're using red to keep from messing up your night vision

  In summary I'd say the sudden shutoff is pretty annoying, but for the price, it's a satisfactory product and the 2 separate buttons, that *don't* turn on in your bag, is something I really appreciate in a headlamp.

Mostly good headlamp for the price

 The red LED setting is very bright compared to its peer headlamps and the fact that it has an independent switch for on/off is amazing -- I never understood why manufacturers would put a red LED option to preserve your night vision yet force you to toggle through the white light settings before you could get to the red setting. It has a high quality head band fabricated from elastic and nylon vs. the frizzy cotton or cheap nylon that appears to be so popular with the competition. I gave it four stars simply because the access to the battery compartment is a compression fitting vs
