 I can't believe how much better the Nitecore is! Petzl needs to step up their game.  [This review is essentially a copy of the one I left on the NU25 page].  Compared to the Petzl, the NU 25: - is half the price - is 1/3 the weight and more compact (important for extended use) - is more water resistant - is able to light up while plugged in to power. (I carry a power bank when hiking, so this is a nice backup mode

I've used Petzl headlamps for a decade and love them. I recently bought both a Petzl Actik Core ($70 model E99abb) and this Nitecore NU25 for half as much. I can't believe how much better the Nitecore is! Petzl needs to step up their game.  [This review is essentially a copy of the one I left on the NU25 page]

 Would you rather have a bit more light but a little less runtime? Hard to say, but both work for my task.  If you kick up the Petzl to high mode you get a measly 2 hours, but the light is insanely bright at 350 lumens. Too bright to just have on continuously unless you're mountain biking. The only time I want that level of illumination is looking for lost keys or trying to figure out what critter made a noise in the woods

Meh. Petzl has gotten sloppy. Nitecore NU25 is way better and 1/2 the price.

2. Changed from the Marmot Hydrogen to the UGQ Bandit 10F, but realized that it was way too warm for the summer so got a used HG Econ Burrow 30F that I use for most of my trips.

0 after another UL guy I met said my pack was too big. I originally looked at other packs, but they just didn't fit. The Ohm 2.0 fits perfectly (I spent a while looking for good fitting) and I think it's a good balance between weight and capacity

Got into the UL game this year and made a bunch of changes based on my needs. Based a lot of my gear from big thru hiker names like Darwin and Dixie, while pulling ideas from Kraig Adams.

2021 Gear - What Did You Change &amp; Why?

-a good quality cooler, or two. I have gone to a two cooler system, one for food and one for beverages. Not saying a Yeti is a must, but you generally get what you pay for. 

-a quality headlamp. I have been through several and my latest is a Petzl Actik core. It’s a little pricey but well worth it. 

Hey all! My boyfriend's birthday is coming up, and I really want to get him like a starter kit for camping. He's been talking about always wanting to go camping, and I have a lot of experience doing multi-day hike/camping trips, so I thought it would be fun to meet in the middle and hopefully go car camping a few times this spring/summer/fall. 

I'm wondering what the best gifts to get him would be - budget is around $150-$200. I'm thinking a 3-4 person tent we could use, plus a sleeping bag and sleeping pad. For the tent, it seems like it's no frills but the golden standard is the Coleman Sundome, so likely going with that. Curious if you all have any recommendations for a sleeping bag/pad (we're in the Northeast and neither of us LOVE cold weather, so likely not going to be camping in cold temps any time soon)? And if I were to add on some other small stuff - what do you all think would be fun and useful? I'm thinking things like a solar lantern or folding chairs or cooking equipment - probably nothing TOO rustic knowing him. :D

Camping "Starter Kit"

 I’ve never had it let me down and the headband still has plenty of “stretch” if it broke tomorrow I would buy a replacement. It has plenty of beam, red function, and it has a rechargeable pack. you can also slap 3 AAA batteries in it at go. Mine charges on micro usb

What do you take camping?

 Yes, I plug it into the computer to re-charge and that does work okay. I am using this on a daily basis. Perhaps I am a hardcore user. As of February I have used this every day for early morning runs and walks

 This one needs some improvements. First, the directions are so minimal, they need to give more info to buyers. Second, the on-off switch on the top is not the easiest to use, needs re-engineering to put it on the side and make not as hard to push in. Last, would have been real nice to have with it a way to re-charge on 110v

 The plastic feels fragile. I guess time will tell. I've been using it for a couple of weeks, and, so far, no signs of wear. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it feels fragile

  I have yet to try this out properly to see how long the "CORE" lithium battery holds out, but that was the main reason for why I decided to try the "Actik" model.  As some other reviewers have said, the design and production quality of the more recent Petzl headlamps is not as good as it was a few years ago. It made me think whether the product was a "fake" Petzl rather than the real thing, but the packaging and headband seem to be of too high quality for that. The production quality of the lamp itself is however, not significantly higher than of cheap no-name brands

' I have since tried it with a new "Kit Adapt" and it works as it should. Perhaps the one I tried it with first was just worn to the point where it will still work with the older TIKKA models but not these new ones. I will up the review from 3 stars to 4 for this.  I may consider buying more of these in the future

Not as impressive as some older Petzl models, but still OK.

 Everyone is obsessed with white 6400k lights but night is campfires and warmth- there's no reason to have a color-accurate daylight balanced LED. They should be 4000k max, preferably 2700k or 3000k. Yeah that's going to be a tough sell because everyone thinks white light is the best, and I hope in a generation this will change. There's no reason for a night light to be pure white- it disrupts the experience of night in just about every way

 The light is bright. And the American consumer is picky so let me be picky for a bit.  1) The Red LED has a very narrow beam. I liked the previous Petzl's LED throw because it was a filter that slid over the white source light so it cast a wide beam

I've had Petzl's for 15+ years. I have always been happy to get a new one, if I needed one. Of all I've owned, I Love this light, the entire system. Great useful light, at any level

 That'S the most important thing anyways so now, let's go outside and let's look at some beam. Shots start with the classic skill mount h03 on turbo mode, brilliant, floodlight, good, color, rendition. Large tier lens does a great job. The workers, hd20 floodlight and turbo about a thousand lumens would be hard to tell the difference
