At a slightly higher price the Faber-Castell Grip is great, and again slightly higher than this Lamy Safari and, for the same price, a Kaweco Sport is a very classy pen (for me at least) that is perfect to carry around in a bag and doesn't look the price.

In praise of cheap fountain pens! Here are mine. Which are your faves?

(As a disclaimer, I don't consider myself a fountain pen hobbyist but simply a user of fountain pens. I don't collect, I'm only interested in the convenience of writing with them.)

I'll start with the pen. You mentioned the Pelikan Twist, which is a pen I'm partial to. E.g

<p>Edit: I am currently firmly in the hobby with a handful of entry-level pens, two mid-range pens, expecting a next-level pen (pilot custom 74), and I have had the luxury to break a couple entry-level pens (always the barrel) and give others my low-end pens and a Lamy Al-Star that I did not enjoy.</p>

Why shouldn't I splurge on pens, if it is something I care greatly about?

 Pelikan, you can do better than this! Returning it is such not an option and requires me to drive a long way that cost me more in gas than the pen is worth. Now I'm stuck with a cracked looking subpar product.

Disappointed by a "patched up" item...

For $17 i thought it would’ve been made of aluminum instead of a very cheap plastic.  i bought a fountain pen for $15 that is made of ceramic. So Pelikan for this one are clearly not up to their name and its well overpriced

So far writes well but it’s cheaply made

I'm a teacher so needed something for the masses of marking! I have bought several fountain pens over the years and this is by far the most comfortable when it comes to grip. My fingers don't keep slipping off.  The ink flow is nice too although I would have preferred a slightly thinner nib. Would be perfect if this brand could do that!

 However the pen barrel is a bit too chunky for my liking... It is far chunkier than Lamy's Safari, hence the 3 stars

Elite - this name is a monument. Probably, the most famous one is "Elite S". In around 1970, "Elite S" became very popular with the TV commercial. "Happa Fumi Fumi"... this marvelous word is it. Of course, function based on the concept is wonderful. "Elite 95s" is inherited the gene. 

Features - "make sense" 
The most common feature is the length. Almost all, this series are short. The length is controllable - this thought is very reasonable. When you don't use, it is pocketable. For this purpose, this pen adapt "spigot joint" mechanism. Not need to turn, also not sound. And the shape is excellent. Especially the streamline shape of nib is very cool. This beautiful streamline - it's like the future vehicle. This black body with gold accent remind limousine. Exclusive driver is you. Of course, the space you stop is problem. Please continue to run, run, run (When you write, length@is long...very, very).

14K, streamline. Streamline shape is very beautiful. Of course, there is not only beauty but also usefulness. The moderate hardness can endure long time writing. And moderate softness tell characteristic repulsion. Good balance. 
Converter is sold separately. Suitable is "CON-20 " / products of PILOT.

 It’s a very classy and elegant looking pen. The fine nib writes beautifully and the capping mechanism is simply sublime. I bought it through Amazon for less than $100, which, for a 14k gold nib with a very unique looking pen, is a bargain in my mind.

Depending on where you buy this pen, it may or may not come with a CON-40 cartridge converter. This particular purchase did not come with a cartridge converter, but with a Pilot branded black ink cartridge. This wasn't a problem since I have a few CON-40 converters handy. But if you do use a CON-40, there is a downside to it: because the CON-40 is so small

NPD - Pilot Elite 95s (f) - Burgundy/Ivory (aka “deep red”)

 Lastly I did not feel confident enough in the caps retention to have it in my pocket. I’m sure it works well in other uses, but I bought it to be a pocket pen.

Poor Choice for a Pocket Pen

Next level (under $100) - Pilot Elite 95s - I have both F and EF - superb in every way. Moderate (under $150) - Pilot Custom Heritage 92 - does everything well. A step up (under $300) - Pilot Custom 823 - great nib, the filling system, hard to beat this pen at any price. Pricey (up to $700 or so) - Pelikan Souverän M1000 Green - beautiful pen, fabulous nib

 There’s a small bit of feedback, but overall this is one of the smoothest fines in my collection. I am in love.

 I never post my pen caps. This pen is very compact and will easily fit into vest pockets or shirt pockets. It is very fine quality and very lightweight. It is one of the silkiest writing pens I have used and rivals pens costing almost a grand
