The Patagonia R1 Hoody is a staple in our outdoor clothing arsenal. It's not just one of our favorites, but the top choice of dedicated outdoor enthusiasts for years now for its untouchable performance. It incorporates all the most important aspects of a mid-layer with its breathable grid fabric, perfectly-fit balaclava hood, chest pockets, and thumb loops. In this category, the Patagonia R1 TechFace Hoody is a phenomenal piece of gear for activities like climbing, hiking, and as a midlayer for backcountry skiing.  So this is the hand pocket just to give you an idea. The size of the hand pocket and the other side the drop pocket. You can fit your whole family's ham, sandwiches in there you could probably fit three or four ham sandwiches and then your lacroix or tall boys over here, whatever you need to fit mittens glove beanies. All the stuff, big drop, pockets and again tiny zipper right here and um

 The material itself is really really comfortable. I would say one of the most comfortable garments i've tested from them before and then the hood hood nice and tight scuba hood right there. So it doesn't get in the way when you're looking around very cozy. In fact, i had the hood on last night as i'm camping in our sleeping bag, so uh stretch cuffs as well, so you can, you know, bring them up a little bit if you want to or just have them nice and tight and low so there it Is the patagonia r1 air there's a whole line of r1 air products, pullovers quarter, zips, hooded non-hooded jacket and so forth men's and women's available we'll have links below where to purchase? Patagonia R1 Air Hoody - Ultra Breathable and Comfortable

 So it doesn't get in the way and in fact, sometimes like to pull it up as warmer out and just rest. My sit right. There hasn't comfortable and the pockets of pretty ideal they're higher up to accommodate for wearing a backpack, which is I do when you do athletic activities, but not so high up that you can't wear for street use so very sizable hand pockets a zippered on both sides. Nice smooth zipper and then the court adjustment isn't ESI to so that's a nice plus so they'll hang it down getting anyway

 You will notice the tried-and-true, r1 fleece material, so very comfortable weather against your bare skin or layered over like a lightweight breathable layer and then the outside you have that very smooth tech base. So that's the name as you can tell it's a kind of slim profile, which I really appreciate: I'm not a big fan of the boxy fitting petticoat new stuff. This is a size large, I'm six foot, one two hundred and some pounds, maybe 205. This week, 45 inches chest 33 inch waist

Patagonia R1 TechFace Hoody Review - Sean Sewell of Engearment

If you go with a a 2lb framed pack and a double wall trekking pole tent 21-27oz you are probably going to be shooting for the 13lb base weight range. (with additional changes)  If you want to get under 10lb you will definitely need to cut harder and at least go for a single wall tent.

A patagonia R1 is pretty heavy.  It is a very nice layer for if the temps are cold but most of the time in the summer a lighter fleece or no fleece will suffice.  Take this advice or leave it depending on what temps you expect on a per trip basis.

Your down jacket is a bit on the heavy side.  you could get down to 6 or 7 oz with something like an enlightened equipment torrid apex.  Don't spend money on this until after your pack and shelter have been sorted though.

Is that rain gear weight including rain pants?  switch to a rain skirt? or no gear for your bottoms at all.  But it sounds a bit wet where you are for that.

1. Gaiters (Potential upgrade to MLD superlight?)
2. My pants (What are some lighter options?)
3. Platypus (Definitely lighter options out there, please suggest)


I'm really hoping that more seasoned ULers will be able to pick apart some of the items on my list that I don't think are heavy but really are.


**For shelter:**

I am 6'0 and 150lbs (skinny fuck)

I am literally open to anything **for a single hiker** (except hammocks) as long as my nerves about weather can be calmed (cold ocean and torrential rain). This means I could accept a tarp+bivy combo, or any non-freestanding shelter. Protection from bugs is required and so is some sort of ground sheet / bathtub.

There are so many options I've been running in circles for multiple days. I really like something like the Durston XMid 1p but it seems(?) rather heavy. The ZPacks Hexamid Solo Tent seems like a good option but the setup process seems like a big hassle when there are other options. Also ZPacks has a shitty reputation on this sub and I am very down to boycott shitty companies in the hiking community. The MLD Solomid XL gets too expensive to be honest ($1000USD). Ideally I also need some material (tarp, vestibule etc.) to tuck my gear underneath due to the rain, but I survive with a pack cover and am open to suggestions in that regard. **I am all ears for brand / product suggestions.**


**For backpack:**

150lbs, small frame, generally fit small/medium backpacks.

God there are so many options I just have no clue. I am super worried about not having a frame considering how much food I need to pack. 2lbs of food per day for 8-10 days gets very heavy.

For features, I would like to keep a hipbelt. I would like at least one pouch to have a water bottle on the outside, potentially a second pouch for external snacks. I have looked at the MLD Burn 38L but the load range is 18-25lbs and with food I can't meet that. I've looked at KS, but the suggested baseweight for those is much lower than I'm at. The Gossamer Gear Mariposa looks promising as it has a removable frame, same with the Granite Gear Crown 2 38L.


I'm really hoping that based on everything I've written here you guys are able to give me some very targeted suggestions, please and thank you so much!


PLEASE rip me to absolute shreds for hiking with a hubba hubba and fatty backpack. I want and need to hear it.

Canadian Pacific Northwest Shakedown

 That'S super lightweight, but still breathable and for its weight. It'S very has a very high insulation value, and so why it is that way is because of this material. You can see it's like this kind of like grid of squares here, so this allows it to be. Like very warm, but also very breathable at the same time, and but just note, if you are wearing this as an outer layer, the wind will just kind of cut right through it

 Warm and also really tight to your head so that you can wear it a helmet over top of it. You know if you're, snowboarding or rock climbing or biking or something like that. So it does look a little bit ridiculous if you're just wearing it out and about you kind of get that a kind of ninja look there. So just something to note, you know up to you if that's a deal-breaker or not, and then we just have this little front pocket here

Patagonia R1 Fleece Full-Zip Hoody Review (2 Weeks of Use)

Melly - used primarily for short dayhikes (\~50 degrees) and around the house. Gets really hot when active so the layer usually comes off unless there’s a stiff breeze. Less great for active use and good passive warmth if there's no wind. Pairs well with a wind shell

 R1 air is more on the casual/passive warmth side that's kind of in between the two but most definitely heavier. 

 Mostly used as mid layer in colder weather. For the weight, you might as well get a nano air or down jacket for more warmth. Add in the requirement for a wind shell and the weight offset is a no-brainer.

Features for warm/breathability don’t necessarily correspond to weight. I find myself using the r1 chest pocket + thumb loops for warmth than the melly kangaroo pocket. However,  the melly hood scoop with a cinch is much warmer than when I am fully covered in the r1.

This was replacing an arc'teryx delta LT for me and it is better in every way. Weight is essentially the same (5g heavier in a medium) but it is far, far comfier both in terms of fit and the feel of the material. I also tried on a Patagonia R1 when buying this and the Nexus was significantly comfier. It also blocks the wind much better than the delta LT due to it's smooth outer face which is a massive bonus - I can wear just this and a baselayer when it is windy and in summits instead of having to sweat it out in my rain jacket

Fit is excellent on my 193cm (6'3") 117kg (258lb) frame in the XXL. It's not an athletic fit but is also not baggy at all. Is also a good length in both sleeves and body which is always a problem for me. The best thing about it is that it is extremely comfortable both next to my skins and also over a baselayer - I generally dislike wearing more than one layer if I can help it but I find myself wearing this at home because it is so comfy

Price is the biggest bonus, far cheaper than equivalents from Patagonia (R1) and arc'teryx here in the UK.

Midlayer Megathread

Though I’ve only worn it for about 10 days, I haven’t seen any signs of wear on the R1 TechFace Hoody. It does have a pretty thin fabric, so I’m curious to see how it holds up to years of hard use. So far, the DWR is still performing very well, but this will be another thing I’ll be keeping a close eye on while I continue to spend time in the R1 TechFace Hoody. I’ll update this review if anything changes, but right now I’m not too worried about the R1 TechFace Hoody’s durability

I suspect the long term durability of the R1 TechFace Hoody will certainly exceed that of softer-face fleeces like the standard R1, but I don’t think it will hold up as well as thicker softshells like the Levitation.

The feature set on the R1 TechFace Hoody is very similar to many stretch-woven soft shells on the market now. It has two large zippered hand warming pockets, one zippered chest pocket, a two-way adjustable hood with a laminated brim, an adjustable hem, and stretch cuffs.

 But because it blocks so much wind, the R1 TechFace Hoody is a bit warmer than its light fabric might suggest. While the R1 TechFace Hoody’s fabric isn’t very lofty, its wind resistance means that it will keep you significantly warmer than a non-hard-face fleece when the wind picks up (as opposed to an open-knit fleece like the Rab Alpha Flash, which blocks essentially zero wind).
