 I was using my 300mm f/4D AF-S plus Nikon 1.4TCII, which got me to 420mm at f/5.6. This combo works really well due to sharpness, light weight, smaller size and good reach

4TC II (which holds up really well though it was first announced in 2001!), but plan on buying the 1.4TC III for improved focus, optics and VR with this lens. The TC brings you to 700mm at f/8. I was getting sharp results on subjects that were moving slower, but for flying birds it didn't quite work out

I was looking at the new Tamron 150-600mm G2 and this Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6VR. I decided to go down to Sammy's Camera to give them both a try to see which one I'd like better

 But if starting at 200mm is a needed minimum, then this 200-500mm is the best price performance without adding another digit to the price tag.

As a person that enjoys photographing birds I have been waiting for this lens for many years. I have been using the Nikon 300 f4 for years with a 1.4 to shoot birds but it was never flexible enough for me. This lens focuses very quickly and I've found it to have great picture quality

 Looking at other peoples pictures and I'm left wondering how come I cant get this lens that sharp on a tripod. I recently had the pleasure of taking pictures of a nesting bald eagle. The lens performed ok, giving me usable shots, but still seems the detail isn't quite there. I took the lens to a local dealer with an Tamron representative and they gave me tips on trying to get the best picture possible ,but even they admit the lens might have to go back

 Feels solid in the hands. Overall seems like a great value once i iron out the kinks. Staying positive as this is a decent investment for a hobbyist.

 I do appreciate the rubber edges by the front elements giving a little extra protection from bumps. The mount is plenty sturdy and easy to adjust\ remove. I do not recommend handhend as this is a pretty heavy lens you need to stabilize. The construction of the lens seems to be good

Lastly, the wide angle lock switch seems somewhat unnecessary, as the zoom ring already functions as a lens lock if you push it forward, while the switch only works at 150mm. The marking also feels flipped to me, as when red is showing it's actually locked, whereas in most other safety applications it would mean it's live. Overall I'm quite happy with the lens, and I look forward to taking more photos with it!.

 I compared side by side using Lightroom. Even at 600mm, the Tamron is still clearly better than 300mm on the Olympus. I note that many in the micro 4/3 community like to claim that 300mm is equivalent to 600mm full frame. That is pure baloney

I'm sorry to be the sad sack of the bunch, but I have purchased, tried in real world scenarios, and it is simply not worth the cost. It is soft, throughout the range from 5.6 to f11, from 150mm and worse past 400mm. Now some of you will look at the "raw" image and say "looks great!" but when inspect closely and compare it to other lenses it is just too soft

 What it means is that I will need to improve my technique to get the keeper rate up. Regardless, I consider it a fair trade off because the images that are in focus are excellent and could not be obtained by lenses with shorter focal lengths.

 The additional weight and bulk is a bigger concern for me since this lens at 4lbs already stretches my limits.  This lens is great through 450mm and very good to 500-550mm.
