Nikon D3500 vs Sony Cyber-shot RX100 III

Get the Canon if you want 4k video capability and a fully articulated touchscreen, but if you're new to DSLRs, the Nikon is a great alternative budget option.

I tell myself that if I want 30 frames per second later I can always reduce the frame rate during the editing process. Also, 60 frames per second allows for smooth slow motion, only 50% slower true, but it is full HD, unlike the 120fps mode, which is unpleasant to use and outputs poor quality video. So yes, I love 60P video and it is now all I shoot. My love of the 60P mode also helps me get over my biggest gripe about the camera

it sucked lol. Using a D3500 with a nikon 17-55 2.8 lens. I couldnt auto-focus on anything because it was so dark, and the lens wasnt letting me manually focus! I switched it to M instead of MA on the lens but when I was spinning the dial it wasn't focusing, I was trying to make it infinty focus

But it is VERY good for the size and price. The zoom range is nice: 24-70mm. To be honest, I'd like it to reach 100mm like the earlier models but then I'm not ready to trade the smaller aperture for that ;-) A couple of other features I enjoy: you can shoot video in black and white .

You can pick up a Nikon D700 or Canon 6D in the used market for less than $500 and they give you better, sharper images than the two new cameras you are looking at. In fact, the newer Nikon D750 FF body costs around $700 used, and it is definitely a better buy than a new D3500. The D700 and D750 WILL also autofocus with AF and AF-D lenses since these high end Nikon cameras have an in body focus motor. If you do not mind buying a used camera, I would recommend shopping for a used FF model instead of buying a new APS-C camera

First off, the price is a little high and considering the price drops after the new versions are released, I thought this might be a little cheaper. It isn’t a big deal and you really can’t go into the RX100 line thinking that you’re just getting a point and shoot. Second, I would have loved to see a touch screen on this camera. In fact, if the MKIV included a touch screen, I would have happily paid the $200 more for a well implemented touch screen

To be honest, the only reason why I bought this was because all modern digital cameras lack the manual control functionalities of the camera. Nowadays, everything is "automatically" managed by the computer within the camera which, in most cases, ruins the pictures. I am so glad that I made the switch to this camera! It does everything that my other cameras does not do! It allows me to manually adjust the focus, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and so much more! I will admit that the camera can be a bit "much" to those who are new to the DSLR universe, but I will say that after you play with the camera for a while, you will know all of the menus, options and their locations like a pro! What I love about this camera is that you have the ability to switch out the stock lens for a macro lens (those insane close up photos) or for a telephoto lens (for those far distant pictures) if you choose! For me, personally, the stock lens does more than enough, but if I have the urge to buy one of the other lenses, I can do that because the camera is made for expand-ability! Contrary to what others may say, personally, I believe that the JPEG images are super clean and crisp. While you are not supposed to use JPEGs for post-production, I believe you can get away with some minor post with these files

My biggest issue with Canon cameras was the poor battery performance. I used to lug around three spare batteries to feed be beast with Canons. With this camera I can shoot all weekend with one charge. I must also mentioned that the the great deal Amazon gave me on this camera on the Black Friday deal

I also hoped to replicate the AA battery size used by my old Canon, so that I can buy replacements most anywhere when they go dead at just the wrong time. But again, alas, the DSC-RX100M3 uses a lithium one, only rechargeable while in the camera (~230 minutes to full charge!, according to the manual), unless one buys a separate charger. The stock Sony charger that comes with the DSC-RX100M3 is basically just a not-very-powerful USB charger (output 5 volts at only 0.5 Amps), with no way to charge the battery directly

But I'm willing to order refurb direct for the VR edition of the lense. Got the standard option because I hate lenses with no IS (or VR in this case).

And I find that holding the camera up to my face while using the EVF gives me the 'feel' of a more stabilized shot. And my pictures look better to me. This is important to me because now that I am in my 60's, try as I might, holding the M2 or my smartphone without an EVF - is not as steady as I'd like it to be or as I remember it was when I was younger. And I need image stabilization in lower light
