I need something that is good for carving as being in ski patrol is usually all about. Basically the opposite of my old freestyle board. I think I am getting the Nidecker Supermatic bindings so I can get in and out fast for ski patrol.

 Others were a little indifferent. They liked the performance and the comfort of the binding, but found themselves using it like a conventional two strap for most of the day. And if that's how you're going to use it, your money is probably best spent elsewhere. And they did all agree on one thing, though

 Similarly, the wider footprint of the baseplate might ever so slightly interfere with your board's more natural flex pattern. What I will say though is that the rockered design around the edges of the baseplate are designed to limit this effect. Anyway, the question everyone wants to know. Is this a game changer? Well, yes and no

 Even without the automatic drop-in technology, these would stand up on their own as a quality pair of performance all-mountain bindings. A couple things to keep in mind though. Naturally, the extra components used in the binding do add a little extra weight and volume to these. It's not overly noticeable, but maybe something you do want to be aware of

 It's probably going to take you a day or two to get comfortable and efficient at using the system, but once you've got it, you'll be getting in and out in absolutely no time. Find your perfect strap fit, fix it in place with the locking ratchets here, and you've got the exact same fit every time you step in. But then again, you don't have to rely on this. That's the beauty of the Supermatics

 So the next problem this step-in binding tackles is snow getting clogged up and jammed in Places where your boot would click in if you had a Burton or K2 step-in binding I'm not saying it'll never happen with this binding. All I'm saying is it'll happen a lot less frequently There's only two real spots where it could really happen in this binding and that's gonna be where the hinge makes the connection on The backside of the binding here, but to be completely honest with you guys I rode this binding probably five or six times during the end of main season more into spring where the snow starts getting really slushy And I never really ran into a problem with it So lastly as you can see this step-in binding actually has a strap system to it now with this strap system Don't worry. It's still gonna be able to step in just as easy as any of the other ones However, I find that this adds an added level of security if you will just gives me a little more confidence that nothing's gonna go Wrong couldn't possibly pop out because you know, if you did these straps would save you in a way So now I want to get into how this binding performs on snow Like I said before I got to ride it about five to six times last year We actually got it in early We were able to demo it a little bit before it hit the market and let me tell you if you're looking for a wicked Responsive hard charging binding with all the conveniences of a step-in This is definitely the binding for you now to get into the straps on the binding These are actually pretty cool because it's mostly a set it and forget it type of deal So basically you want to put your boot in here Lock down the straps as needed to where you feel secure on it And then like I said before with this little lever right here The straps will stay in place and you just pull the back out and that way when you lock in Are totally secure in there. You really don't have to touch them another feature

I should mention with the straps as well They have a little color coding to let you know when the straps are unlocked versus locked So when you flip the strap up and you see this orange little block on the strap, that means it can move freely So whenever you are setting it you want to make sure you can't see that orange and you want to have it locked down With any step in binding on the market You're gonna run into a little bit of added weight whether it's Burton or k2 with their boots being bulky and you know inherently heavier this binding there is a Little bit more weight to it. But all in all I didn't really find it too much of a problem So bottom line being if you're in the market for a new step in binding And you're looking for something that rips really hard and is super responsive

What are the “go to“ bindings these days ?

 For the adjustments in placement of this toe strap, there's two different adjustments on the ladder on the medial side. So they have one that's closer to your toe side edge, and then one that's closer to your heel side edge. Just two slight adjustments. So just some micro adjustments there, and then the ankle strap, you know, again 3D contour molded, nice foam injected that's actually stitched on

Now this is size large, and the size large accommodates, you want to remember, it's like, it's basically 10 plus, size 10 plus I think, but gosh that looks good

2021 UNION STRATA FIRST IMPRESSION/ SNEAK PEEK!!

I wouldn't go as soft as the Strata for a board like the Mercury, but that's because I see it as a board to ride all over the mountain, even on some harder lines that benefit from more response. The Cartel X, or the Union Atlas, seem like overkill, though. Too stiff for a do-it-all deck like the Merc. Personally, I'd go Union Force, Burton Cartel, Nitro Team, Ride C-6, Rome Katana

Just bought the Capita Mercury 158 Wide and I’ve been doing research on best bindings. What I’ve seen so far is the Burton Cartel X is the best for being on the stiffer side. Looking for other options since they don’t sell on the REI website. Does anyone have experience using the Union Strata bindings or something similar?

Best bindings for Capita Mercury board

 It's very thin so it's really lightweight, it's not bulky but it's got some decent padding on the inside and it's 3D molded. I've been really happy with it so far. In my experience once you tighten it down it just kind of disappears, you can't even feel it anymore. It's a super super comfortable ankle strap

 You're also going to get Union's new Forma ankle strap on the Strata. I'm really stoked on this feature, it's a really really comfortable ankle strap. It's very thin so it's really lightweight, it's not bulky but it's got some decent padding on the inside and it's 3D molded. I've been really happy with it so far

 You can still feel those little bumps as you're cruising around, you know what's going on under your feet while minimizing those shocks you can feel sometimes in your ankles and your knees as you're going over choppy terrain. The Strata's are a pretty well rounded flex honestly. Like a more medium maybe just on the stiffer side a medium flex. I've found that the high backs are still relatively tweakable

 They grip the boot really well, they grip the board really well as you're mounting the bindings but the big thing is that they help a lot with dampening. They're not passing all those vibrations up into your feet so it's a much more comfortable ride but they're still a pretty good board feel. You can still feel those little bumps as you're cruising around, you know what's going on under your feet while minimizing those shocks you can feel sometimes in your ankles and your knees as you're going over choppy terrain. The Strata's are a pretty well rounded flex honestly

 And the EVA foam just bends easier. Yeah. Or flexes, gives easier. So it allows the board to bend easier

 Get a different angle on your toe. Yeah, if you're on the bigger side, you put it forward. If you're on the smaller side, you put it back. And the toe straps are the best toe straps out there

 Not maybe the best like the Contact Pro or like if you want to compare it to Burton Reflex. These foot beds are just a touch bigger and we touched on that than let's say the Atlas. So if you're one of those people that's like a ten and a half, you can fit down into a medium here. Which most ten and a halfs

 So I think that's the biggest standout straight away about the Stratas. They've changed the ankle strap, it looks like slightly. In the past it was a mix of plastic with some material stitched in, and it looks like they still have some stitching on half of the ankle strap, but the ankle strap has changed up slightly. And then the toe strap has got the webbing as well, so great for holding onto the toe of your boot

 I always lean towards trying to fit into a smaller binding because you just get more of that snug fit around your boot. It says here large is 10.5 plus, medium is 8 to 10, and small is 6 to 7.5

 The flex of the high back feels like a medium stiffness. So more leaning towards all mountain riding. But I know a lot of people do take these into the park as well. But traditionally, I think the Forces, their strength is for riding the whole mountain through powder, trees, carving on the resort
