 And if you guys need help finding the right snowboard for you, feel free to click the link in the description and reach out to me or one of the other experts on Curated. Never Summer rates this an 8 out of 10 on their flex scale and it was very comfortable at pretty much any speed I was able to take it at today, regardless of condition or uneven terrain. It felt very damp. There are inserts between the bindings that create a little bit of stiffness, but once you really begin to press into them, especially at higher speeds, it creates a nice locked in feeling that really puts triple camber in the category of free ride

 Today we're at the gorgeous Powder Mountain and I was able to test the 161X Never Summer Proto FR. Just so you guys know, we are not sponsored by any of these companies. All of these reviews are completely unbiased in my opinion. Never Summer claims that this is a free ride snowboard

 That was not the case on this board. In terms of tree riding, I took it in the woods. It was very sticky and the sport handled great. It was very maneuverable

 I ride a NS Swift Split for deep pow days and it slays and floats like a dream. Sometimes the uphill is meh but once you master the uphill technique it’s just fine.

 Alright let's start off talking about the flex, I'd say it's definitely going to be on the stiffer side of medium getting quite stiff and the personality is going to be more on the aggressive side of the spectrum, it's a very powerful snowboard, the feel kind of reminds me of the Proto Ultra but in a directional shape. This is going to be a very energetic snowboard as well, pretty much any tension you're able to load up in this board it's going to give right back, it's going to offer a lot of pop, it's going to have a very snappy feel to it and when it comes to butters and flat ground type tricks you are going to be working against that stiffer flex and the additives in this snowboard to get any kind of presses going so it's going to be more challenging to find those balance points and it does have a very precise feel to it so I'd be paying close attention to your edges for that kind of stuff to make sure you're not catching up and generally it's not going to be the most butter friendly just because of how aggressive and how precise this board is. This is going to be a very energetic snowboard as well, pretty much any tension you're able to load up in this board it's going to give right back, it's going to offer a lot of pop, it's going to have a very snappy feel to it and when it comes to butters and flat ground type tricks you are going to be working against that stiffer flex and the additives in this snowboard to get any kind of presses going so it's going to be more challenging to find those balance points and it does have a very precise feel to it so I'd be paying close attention to your edges for that kind of stuff to make sure you're not catching up and generally it's not going to be the most butter friendly just because of how aggressive and how precise this board is. I also want to talk about the carving experience on the Proto FR and there's two specs I want to highlight, first is the waist width so at a 160 you're going to get a 25

 There's also multiple dampening technologies built into this snowboard to help smooth out the ride and iron out any chatter or vibrations you might get as well as a sintered base which is known to be a higher end base material that's harder, faster and more durable compared to an extruded base but you do want to make sure to wax it regularly to maintain a nice fast glide out there. And that's going to be it for a quick tech breakdown, let's get into how this board feels out on snow.  The Carbon model is about just under 20% lighter than the regular model, which allows you to save that energy on those long approaches and for those steep ascents. The best description of the Backwoods in general is a freeride board hidden behind a powder shape. The nice wide nose gives the board more lift and float in the deeper snow, and the shorter tail gives the board more power and maneuverability. The camber profile of this board has early rise in the tip and the tail, and it features camber underfoot to lock in those hard carves

 One of the things I like most about the Backwoods carbon is that weight is always an issue in the backcountry, and this board and model has allowed us to really push the boundaries of what's been possible for all ultra-light splits.

 All this tech results in an ultra light split board that comes in at 2780 grams in a 157. Even with this weight difference, this board rides very closely to the regular Backwoods in terms of flex in the nose, middle, and tail. It's not as stiff as a door. The overall flex of this board we rate at a 7 out of 10

 This is our lightest weight core and allows us to improve pop and dampening. Sandwiching the core, we utilize the Triax Carbon Fire Layup instead of fiberglass. All this tech results in an ultra light split board that comes in at 2780 grams in a 157. Even with this weight difference, this board rides very closely to the regular Backwoods in terms of flex in the nose, middle, and tail

Weston Quiver Series: Backwoods Carbon Splitboard

 Sandwiching the core on the Backwoods we use a polyurethane sidewall which increases dampening as well as durability while reducing waste and manufacturing. On the base of the Backwoods we also use a high-end standard 4000 which means it's super fast and because it's black dominant it's super easy to repair with core shots using P-tex. And then to finish it all off in the split board specifically we utilize a number of features that we call split tech. One being we actually shift the touring bracket forward on the board to give a pivot point that's a little bit higher up which means the nose is going to come up as you're breaking trail in deep snow and make kick turns a little bit easier

 The only difference is if it was a really steep and a little bit more variable I might lean towards the ridgeline but otherwise for a standard day in Colorado the Backwoods is my choice for 90% of the time.

 Because we built for the backcountry as well the camber underfoot has a dual purpose of increasing edge hold as well as skin traction on the uphill. For the core on the Backwoods we also use a blend of poplar and bamboo stringers. This provides a nice surfy damp feel so the board's going to ride smooth while still having a good amount of energy. As we mentioned with the Backwoods it is a hybrid freeride powder board so the flex is a little stiffer at a seven but it's still pretty approachable and nice for all mountain riding in general

 The shape of the Backwoods is a tapered directional shape meaning it has a nice big wide nose which tapers on down to a narrower tail. The wide nose up in front provides float and deep snow and the narrow tail helps with maneuverability and giving those turns through tight trees. To complement the tapered directional shape on the Backwoods we use a freeride camber profile meaning we have camber dominant between the inserts that goes into a reverse camber section in the nose and the tail. This is a progressive camber meaning we have a mellower section of reverse camber up in front that's prolonged while it gets more aggressive and shorter in the tail to provide a little bit more power and drive through your turns
