When the U67 came out (essentially a U87 but with a tube) it was even better. The condenser mic had been revived and perfected. Moving from broadcasting to recording I continued to love the Neumanns.

It’s over $3,000 for a U87. That’s...excessive. My feeling is that ~$1500 of that is quality components put together by skilled people, and the rest is the little diamond badge on the side. 

Is it a good sounding mic? Of course. So good that you don’t need any kind of significant EQing in most cases. Which for an engineer in the 60s, was incredibly useful. Patching in some cumbersome expensive EQ unit with nothing more than a couple distortion inducing shelving filters was something to try to avoid. Using a great mic made everything easier and cleaner. 

So Neumann made a strong name for themselves, deservedly. But these days we have unlimited crystal clear EQ options literally one click away. Getting it perfect at the source is no longer as important as it used to be. An $800 mic (or even less sometimes) plus 5 minutes of EQ will get you a sound as good as a Neumann. Yet the name has stuck and people are willing to shell out big bucks for it. 

Is there a difference? Definitely.

Will your average discerning listener notice it? I don’t think so. 

Are Neumanns superb mics? Absolutely.

Do you need one for an amazing vocal sound? No 

Will I be buying one? Eventually. 

Gotta love em.
