The Machine Room : Gear Recommendation Questions Go Here!

When it comes to interfaces you thankfully have some more good cheap options. I can personally recommend the Native Instruments Komplete Audio 2 at 170$ CAD. If you need something that can survive a real beating, then spending a litttle extra on a focusrite might be worthwhile but otherwise the recording quality of the NIKA 2 is absolutely amazing for the money.

I'm sure this question is asked a lot but I couldn't see anything on it in the FAQs so I decided to make a post. 

Studying music in school, I normally would perform to an audience, but with my city being in lockdown once again, all my assignments and performances have now gone online. This means that now I have to record myself playing and submit it. I was intending to buy a microphone eventually, but with the situation I'm in, now seemed like a perfect time to buy one.

So should I get a usb mic or a xlr microphone? Call me stupid, but the only difference I know of the two is that one is usb powered and the other needs an audio interface :p. I will be recording the violin and piano and I'm looking for a pretty decent microphone as I will be using it quite a but from now on. I have around 300 usd including the audio interface if i was to go down that route, but cheaper is better for a student like me (as long as it's not bad quality)

The RME BabyFace Pro FS/MadiFace Pro. RME are known for their software support which is why I recommend them so much. They have drivers supporting M1 as they aren't reliant on 3rd parties because they develop their own interface core.

Hey all, I would love some advice on a new audio interface. I’d consider myself kind of a tweener: not quite a prosumer because I make a living with this stuff, but not quite professional level music producer who would know their way around hardware and outboard gear. I’m extremely curious and committed to learning, and looking to improve mt craft every day.

My problem:

I just upgraded my old rMBP (2013) to an M1 Max, and I'm thinking of getting a new audio interface. My current Duet 2 works fine but Big Sur/Monterey broke some of its features and Apogee has been extremely slow to update it. Support looks to be on its way/phasing out. Makes sense as I bought it in 2013…

I am thinking maybe this is a window where I can still to sell it and upgrade my interface so that I can gain some more flexibility in my workflow. 

As for my goals, I want to have two or three main workflows:

1) 80% of the time I teach music remotely. I use virtual audio routing, a lot of screen sharing, and teach on guitar/keyboard/DAW. It isn’t strictly necessary but I think DSP processing would be really nice to have so I could compress on the way in and use a virtual mix bus, offering my clients (especially the ones learning basic music production) better quality audio for their mixes and for ear-training.

2) The other main use cases are recording acoustic guitar and voice (easily accomplished by any interface), and one day

3) possibly do some live streaming, where I am just writing/producing on the fly (I think this is where having the new laptop opens up OBS/Wirecast and all the DAW/external audio whereas my old laptop could not handle it). Internal mic preamps would be nice, but again not necessary.

Obviously any interface will allow me to do these things but I just wanted to explain how I would use it. I'm looking at Apogee Symphony Desktop, Antelope Audio Zen Q, and the Apollo Twin X...

So if I have this correct, my pros/cons are:

Apogee Symphony Desktop
-famous for their converters
-EQ/Compression in both DSP/Native (no DSP reverb, though)
-Dual Path (where both print and/or monitoring effects are linked, and supposedly near zero latency)
-main con is the price

Apollo Twin X
-many of the same pros
-effects are very well-regarded
-more hardware emulations
-Duo is more affordable, but I don’t love the idea of being locked into their plugin ecosystem and all of that can add way more cost, even with the heritage Black Friday deal

Antelope Audio Zen Q
-way more effects (37) than both of the above,
-but hardware and software seem to not be super user-friendly
-I don’t know anything about their reputation, either on the gear/support side of things.

The other route I could go is just super simple, get a Duet 3 or other two channel interface and slowly acquire outboard gear… but that seems super expensive, and ultra slow.

What would you recommend to someone like me?

Recommendation for new USB-C interface

 I also went for RME because their drivers & routing software are top notch. Audio quality played only a minor role tbh because even budget Interfaces nowadays have extremely good audio quality.

I upgraded from a Presonus Studio 26 to an RME Babyface Pro FS last year. My main reason for the upgrade was that I needed something that is portable (the babyface can be powered by usb) but also has ADAT for additional I/O. I also went for RME because their drivers & routing software are top notch. Audio quality played only a minor role tbh because even budget Interfaces nowadays have extremely good audio quality

So, I have a Motu M2. I recently traded and got a SSL 2 as well. I like both of then. But was thinking an upgrade would take things to the next level. I was eyeing the RME Babyface Pro FS, Apogee Duet 3, Motu Ultralite MK5, Antelope Audio Zen Go and the Arturia Audiofuse. Does anyone have any experience with these? And do any of them have to be plugged in externally through an outlet? Price wise RME is probably out of my budget. Are these things that much better quality wise than what I already have. I thought the M2 and SSL 2 had good preamps and converters. But the more I read the more it seems that they are more budget interfaces. And help?

Upgrading to an RME or Apogee audio interface questions

I've had much pricier setups but this is by far the nicest sounding.  I don't ever see upgrading lol.

My Value Forever Setup

 But the reason I am going back to RME, the sound is just a very small part of the consideration when you choose your main audio interface, plus the current-gen AD/DA converters are extremely capable, even the cheaper options are way too good to be blamed on when you can't get a good mix from it. I would endorse RME with all my heart, their analog circuitry is very well designed, both hardware and driver are extremely stable, Top-notch customer support (their support actually know what they are doing and very quick to resolve your problem), Totalmix is awesome and super flexible.
