First, instead of a USB C to USB A cable, I got an empty bag. Either 1) this was a return that was sold to me as new or 2) MOTU’s quality control is really bad if they send empty bags instead of cables.  There was also a handwritten serial number on the instruction card, and the box was mangled. The former seems weird, the latter not so much since I often get mangled boxes from Amazon

 I’m replacing a Steinberg interface that I’ve used for many years (many months with this particular Mac), and I’ve never heard anything like this. An audio interface has one main job, to send and receive audio, so I find this unacceptable, especially a few minutes into using it.  I did some searching and found several others that reported this, and some of them said a new cable fixed it. Others said it did not

 I often switch from speakers to headphones or vice versa, and on my Steinberg, I would just spin one knob up and the other down quickly. This would take a tedious minute with the knob on the MOTU, so instead, I’d have to do this in software.  On the positive side, while I had it, it was really loud and clear, a significant improvement over my Steinberg, which by comparison was weak and a bit muddier.

 They're so easy for me to tote around and they have so many inputs and outputs and routing capabilities that it works for me. And especially if your device gets a little bit buggy sometimes, when you read through the notes of the firmware, sometimes you learn that the company has heard a few complaints and they've done something about it. So I think it's a really good sign when a company is actively, occasionally, hopefully not too often, hopefully there's not so many bugs that they need to update the firmware every month. But if they're updating the firmware once a year or something like that, or twice a year, I think it's worth looking at to see if it's going to improve the functionality of my device

The Machine Room : Gear Recommendation Questions Go Here!

When it comes to interfaces you thankfully have some more good cheap options. I can personally recommend the Native Instruments Komplete Audio 2 at 170$ CAD. If you need something that can survive a real beating, then spending a litttle extra on a focusrite might be worthwhile but otherwise the recording quality of the NIKA 2 is absolutely amazing for the money.

I'm sure this question is asked a lot but I couldn't see anything on it in the FAQs so I decided to make a post. 

Studying music in school, I normally would perform to an audience, but with my city being in lockdown once again, all my assignments and performances have now gone online. This means that now I have to record myself playing and submit it. I was intending to buy a microphone eventually, but with the situation I'm in, now seemed like a perfect time to buy one.

So should I get a usb mic or a xlr microphone? Call me stupid, but the only difference I know of the two is that one is usb powered and the other needs an audio interface :p. I will be recording the violin and piano and I'm looking for a pretty decent microphone as I will be using it quite a but from now on. I have around 300 usd including the audio interface if i was to go down that route, but cheaper is better for a student like me (as long as it's not bad quality)
