The next two days is where they really shined, once everything was skied up I spent my time charging crud. My lord these skis busted through anything and gave me the confidence to rip without hesitation and the 94 underfoot felt so solid especially when landing any air.

 Hey, what's up everyone? This is Andrew from the Ski Monster. Today, I'm going to talk about one of our favorite all-mountain bindings, the Marker Griffin. Before I get started, first and foremost, we always recommend you see a certified shop technician to make sure that binding is properly adjusted to your ski boot, but if you find yourself in a pinch on top of the hill, I'm going to go over quick ways to kind of adjust your bindings to make sure your boots are properly fit. One of the most common issues we see with a binding that's not properly adjusted is wiggle room in the toe, and that's due to the AFD not being properly adjusted to the toe height of the boot

 When I first looked at it it looked a little bit flimsy. All my field testing has quickly debunked that. The carbon-infused plastic is lightweight so skinning is very easy, straightforward, doesn't feel too bulky but when you lock it into ski mode with your traditional alpine style toe piece skiing down feels smooth, bomber and you know that it's a little bit safer because you have that elastic travel up in front. So I've taken the shift out into the backcountry a few days

 All told, the Salomon Shift is one of the most versatile ski bindings on the market for backcountry skiers, resort-goers, and those who like to split their time between the two disciplines. Uphill Performance With its nearly 4-pound weight and single climbing aid, the Salomon Shift binding might not seem like a great climber on paper. But in practice, it’s been surprisingly capable on the skin track. For starters, the Shift uses traditional tech toe inserts in walk mode, which allow for natural range of motion and excellent mobility for kick turns and climbing wandering routes

 In the end, we’d throw the G3 on our dedicated backcountry set-up, but the Shift’s one-quiver versatility makes it the better option for the majority of skiers out there. The final competitor is a throwback: Marker’s Baron EPF 13. Right off the bat, the touring performance with this binding can’t come close to matching the Shift: It’s significantly heavier at over 6 pounds for the pair, and the frame-style setup is clunky and harder to pivot while climbing. But on the downhill, it’s a proper alpine design that matches up very nicely with the Salomon in security and power transfer

 I’ve completed multiple full-day tours in the Mount Baker Wilderness with no shortage of ascending and didn’t think twice about the binding, which is high praise. All in all, the Shift has proven itself as a capable uphill companion in conditions ranging from icy crud to deep, fresh powder. That being said, my biggest complaint about the Shift’s uphill performance is that the locking brake lever at the heel can pop up occasionally, releasing the brakes while skinning. Though slightly annoying, this release thankfully doesn’t lock the boot into ski mode, which can be an issue with rotating heel designs like the G3 Ion and Dynafit ST Rotation

Switchback Travel | Salomon S/Lab Shift MNC Binding Review

 We've got a toe piece and a heel piece and it's DIN certified. Now these bindings come from 10, a maximum of 10 DIN setting, a maximum of 30 now which is fantastic. So getting the skis into uphill mode, number one you flick down here, ideally you want to keep your gloves on.  It is the next generation of binding for skiing so me and Dukey have come out today to explain exactly how to use this binding and what it's really good for, the pros and cons. Now just to let you know I'm not actually sponsored by Salomon or Atomic, I just get a discount so this is actually an honest review. Now I've had these bindings for two winters now and the last two weeks because of the lifts not running I've really put them to test. I've actually been climbing up to around 9,000 metres in two weeks with clients and I've really tested these bindings

 Again lift back, push down. Now the last stage is actually putting your toe piece in the binding, so you've got to make sure that your boots have got holes in, pins, and then what you want to do is you actually push back on this jaw here, push back on this lever, open the jaw, line up with the holes and there you are in. Just to secure that, you then lift up and you've got this two marks here and you need to pull, use the Martin hook and make sure it's closed. So these bindings are great because you've got the capabilities of actually going uphill in the pin and then coming down with alpine performance

 And I've been on anything from Friches to Denafit to frame bindings like the Duke and Kingpins, but this was really impressive and changed kind of how I skied a binding like this, so pretty psyched. Cool. So, let's compare it to kind of some other stuff out there. I know you have a full TechFit setup, you think this binding gives you a little more confidence on the downhill, do you feel hindered on the uphill, what do you think? You know, originally stepping into this binding I wasn't really sure what to expect, and then as we got into it and clicked in, I was blown away

 And you know, in recent years, there's been demand for that, there's been demand for a binding that on the way down, it's just an alpine binding, you can ski it every day, and it still has a tech ability, or a touring ability rather, and pretty much leading up to this, your only choice was a frame binding. So I think comparing this to a tech fit binding on one end of the spectrum is really important, on the other end of the spectrum, I think you have to compare it to a frame binding. Right. And I don't know what you felt, but I thought, just after testing it a few days, I thought you know, it gives the ski a natural flex, sometimes frame bindings can kind of give you a little dead zone of flex right underfoot

I must agree, I think that you know, with that plate here, you know, you're getting that dead spot for sure. And with a tech binding, people are looking for that lighter binding because it's you know, no frame and it's got the toe piece that's much lighter

 I actually didn't ski it like a tech binding, I kind of skied it like an alpine binding, and it was really interesting to see this type of setup and be confident to ski it and kind of be aggressive on it. Yeah, that was kind of my initial reaction, you know, when you first look at it, it's a brand new thing, so I would say for me, my first maybe five to ten turns, I was a little hesitant, and you know, Salomon, part of the design, there's been a lot of R&D that's gone into it, Salomon's basically, they claim it's matching the performance of their driver binding, which is known for being a really high performance binding. And you know, I think they're right, I think it pretty much does after, like I said, after a couple turns, I personally felt totally confident. I really do think they nailed it with it, as they're marketing this in a way as an alpine binding with tech capability, so I mean you can, it's an alpine binding, and if you want to go uphill, you got the ability to go uphill, but when you want to go downhill, it is an alpine binding, and you ski it like an alpine binding, so you're not losing much functionality with the downhill at all, which a lot of people are looking for that binding where they want to ski on an everyday basis, but they're kind of worried about the toe and the pins and everything, but when you're in alpine mode, you're skiing alpine binding, and when you want to go up, you click it down, and you're in that functionality of a tech toe fitting, so I think they've really nailed it with that

2019 Salomon S/Lab Shift Binding Review

 My boots of choice are the Scarpa Freedom RS with a flex rating of 130. These too lean towards downhill performance. Shifting into downhill mode is very easy with these bindings, though it does require stepping completely out of the binding. I don't consider this a problem, as speed during transition isn't my highest priority

 It's a good idea to pivot the boots to clear any ice from the inserts. Lock the pins into place by pulling back hard on the front throw. I'm not very adept at positioning the pins accurately, and these bindings lack a convenient boot stop, such as that found on the G3 Ion or Marker Kingpin, so getting the pins engaged reliably can be a bit tricky. Once locked in, however, they provide a foolproof and secure fitting

 After mounting the Shift MNC 13s to a pair of Liberty variant 97 skis, I was ready to put these bindings to the test. My evaluation consisted of five days in Aspen snowmass with ample time skiing uphill and down to get a feel for the performance of these bindings. Between dawn control sessions with the dog, following my kids on green and blue groomers, and doing laps at Highlands Bowl, I experienced a variety of snow and terrain throughout the week. Setting up to tour is relatively easy with the Shift binding

 Without the budget or interest in maintaining a quiver of skis for all possible conditions, I was looking to create an all-mountain setup that would serve my particular style of skiing, which is 70% inbounds and 30% backcountry. With no intention of racing uphill or down, my primary objective was to achieve a well-balanced, all-purpose, affordable ski setup that was biased toward downhill performance, reliability, and varied conditions over lightweight, touring-specific, or powder-only use. After mounting the Shift MNC 13s to a pair of Liberty variant 97 skis, I was ready to put these bindings to the test. My evaluation consisted of five days in Aspen snowmass with ample time skiing uphill and down to get a feel for the performance of these bindings
