Is It STILL The Best Webcam? (Logitech C920S HD Pro Webcam Review)

That’s underselling it a bit, though. It’s basically on par with the Logitech Streamcam in its ability to produce a satisfying picture with good exposure, although the image was fuzzier than I would have liked for the price. Picture quality aside, the build quality is excellent, and its stand lets you easily mount it on your monitor, or attach it to a tripod. But, this might be a more attractive option if it’s discounted

But assuming you simply want to purchase a webcam, our goal is to make it easier for you to find the one that matches your needs and your budget. Here, I aim to decipher which USB webcams are worth your money.

Each camera’s video quality was judged by using it with Zoom (where footage is prone to compression, as it is with other web-based video calling apps), as well as with OBS Studio or VLC to see how it compares with a locally-stored recording.

The C920 is significantly more affordable than dedicated streaming webcams while still being a high-quality device, which makes it a perfect entry-level streaming camera.

In essence, the Logitech C920 is the perfect webcam because it's perfected giving you exactly what you need at a reasonable price, and with very little fuss. Sure, you could throw $200+ on something really fancy, but the C920 provides exactly what most folk need in terms of performance, affordability and ease of use. Truly the peoples' champion of webcams.

The design certainly isn't going to knock anyone's socks off but its bar design is highly recognizable, to the point where it's likely that other brands have taken inspiration and applied a similar look to their own products over the years. The camera lens is located centrally on the 'bar', with LED lights that turn blue when the camera is in use and microphones on either side. 

Now that things have calmed down somewhat the recommended price has dropped to $79.99 / &pound;89.99 / AU$145, but given the age of the product you can get your hands on one for much less than that.

 The Windows Logitech Camera Capture software averts the desynchronization by likely using Nvidia's NvEncoder, as I have a Nvidia Geforce 670 video card. Took me awhile, but I now have 1080p/720p stutter free on my Linux box, substitute "-video_size 1920x1080":  $ ffmpeg -f v4l2 -input_format "mjpeg" -video_size 1080x720 -i /dev/video2 -f alsa -i hw:0,0 -pix_fmt yuv420p -acodec aac -c:v h264_nvenc -pixel_format yuv444p -y /tmp/output.mp4  First, we specify the "mjpeg" instead of the "yuyv422" stream provided by the camera, as yuyv422 is rawvideo and still to heavy on resources here. Then the output alsa and h264 codecs, along with the output filename

  Update 3: I almost never write reviews. I feel that I must alert other potential buyers of the experience that we should now call ill-Logitech. Through multiple e mails they gave me instructions on how to use the web cam with a PC despite my repeatedly, in the title, telling them i have a Mac. Each time they wanted me to provide information and now, for a return, asked for a receipt that is not a cut/paste receipt from Amazon

 I have a Logitech keyboard, mouse and tomorrow my webcam is going back. I wouldn't take a Logitech product if it were free.  Update 3: I almost never write reviews. I feel that I must alert other potential buyers of the experience that we should now call ill-Logitech

The Opal C1 webcam is both an exciting indication of things to come in the future of webcams overall and also a niche product that probably won&rsquo;t appeal to most users. If money is no object, then yes, this camera probably takes the best photos and video on this list. At the same time, it costs $300, its software is Mac-only, and said software costs $4 a month.
It&rsquo;s an easy-to-use software suite, sure, and there are convenient features such as bokeh and an AI powered touch-up function. But we&rsquo;ve seen similar functionality for cheaper elsewhere, and it doesn&rsquo;t make you sign up for yet another &ldquo;service.&rdquo;

Would you consider buying a $299.99 webcam? That’s the cost of Opal’s C1, which is now available to purchase on an invite-only basis. My guess is that many of you will say no. Others, who are on the never-ending quest to look good for all of those Zoom meetings, might have a list of questions in need of some really convincing answers, and rightfully so

Opal has good answers to those questions. But having a chance to try the webcam itself was more convincing than any answer I received. The C1 aims to — and mostly succeeds at — supplying DSLR-like image quality (complete with plenty of background separation or bokeh) for far less than a decent camera-turned-webcam might cost you, without all of the dongles and other hardships that sometimes come with the territory.

 My guess is that many of you will say no. Others, who are on the never-ending quest to look good for all of those Zoom meetings, might have a list of questions in need of some really convincing answers, and rightfully so. Like, why pay this much when there are so many other more economical options, including using your phone as a webcam? And why go with newcomer Opal over legacy brands like Logitech?

 Compared to my MacBook Pro’s built-in microphone, my voice is just as clear, but through the C1 it has a little more resonance and depth to it. When I was recording a sample, some home construction next door started, and while its noise cancellation effects weren’t great, it was capable of picking my voice out from all of the noise.
