X68 good as access point, terrible as router

I have att 1GB fiber running to an ONT feeding the WAN port of a BGW210 gateway/router and was looking to upgrade the built in wifi of the BGW210 which has always had poor range and speed performance. I chose the TPLink Deco product family given the great price point for the features they had to offer. The Deco App is user friendly but very limited in regards to router setup so I had to do most of the advanced configuration on the BGW to get both pieces of equipment to play nice. The BGW has no true bridge mode but I was able to get it to act as a stand-alone gateway for the Deco by setting up ip pass through, disabling dhcp and most of the firewall options

Great replacement for Netgear RBK50

Been using it for a week now and no reboots and complete connectivity with all the computers and devices running. Since I do IT for a living I do hate their app as it is too simple and the web interface is a joke compared to the iPhone app's. The advanced feature just are not there for someone who knows what they are doing but the price is right and when I need my son to get offline I can easily toss him on the deny list and his gaming computer is offline. Don't need their subscription plan for that

Signal Strength

Not the Best Bang for the Buck but Attractive Design

Not sure it's common to all mesh wifi, but Velop needs a lot of node to have the equivalent signal strength and coverage as in my case I ended up using all 6 of it to get rid of dead spot. I knew 3 nodes may not be enough but I expected 4 would cut it. Yet I found myself kept adding more to the mesh. While I was at it, I also grabbed a deal from Staples for 2 dual band Velop mini mesh node, the ac1300, but ended up returning it as its backhaul throughput is too low while wifi signal is as strong as the tri-band, so other than interference it does no good

Going mesh made a huge difference for me. I had/have great overall speed at the main router and anything plugged into it or in the same room, but the signal was not strong in other areas of the house, especially perimeter areas and outside where I had cameras. Switched to TP-Link Deco system and now I get strong signals and speeds everywhere.

Speed

Easy for a novice to set up, good performance, good set of features

I replaced a 'power line' ethernet distribution system with the Velop mesh system and am definitely getting better performance. Velop reports that I am getting >200mbps download speed through my ISP, but on any wifi device (iPhone X) or Ethernet connected device (MacBook Pro) using SpeedTest, I only get a max speed of 120 mbps. SpeedTest and Velop do not use the same algorithms to measure speed, so the comparison might not be fair. The price on Velop continues to drop as other competitors now offer mesh systems with very good performance

There Are So Many Great Things About It, But the Bad Things are Pretty Bad

Its speed is awesome. And its app is very nice to use. If you don't handing the reigns over to the device to basically control itself, then you will probably like this product. I think there is a lot of overlap between the non-technical consumer who wants good Wifi with easy setup, and the consumer who can tolerate a little lag when watching YouTube because their device's connection dropped for 30 seconds

Security

Does not say which one. There are a few in App Store and Google's app place. The setup password appears on a white piece of tape underneath the bottoms of the devices, black ink, about #3 font, includes a character that could be a zero, a capital "O", or a lower case "o". For a company that's been around forever, I would have thought they had at least one employee whose job is to provide common sense to the finished products

Device time limits don't work well

I got this for the parental controls (to limit my kids daily time) and for whole house coverage. You have to pay a subscription fee to get the parental controls, which I did. The problem is that, unless you power the devices off, they download in the background (apps checking for updates, system updates, etc) . The two hour allocation would be used up while they were in school and I'd have to keep adding time after they got home

Setting up a Mesh Network can be frustrating but ultimately rewarding

reason why I am giving this review is because of the patience and professionalism of the tech support lady (call center was in the phillipines)..

So far so good. Had appliance WiFi connectivity issues with the ORBI system and couldn’t get their customer service to figure it out. So I returned it and got the Tp-Link Deco. Now with the Deco, Initially had some connection issues with some appliance WiFi connectivity, however to-link customer service helped me problem solve it and no issues
