Leaf Shave Twig Razor vs Merkur Heavy Duty Safety Razor 34C

They're just not sharp enough. I shave daily, and using a DE razor I can achieve a great smooth shave with 2-3 passes (with a touch-up); but using the Twig with the Leaf blade, its at least 3-4 passes and then multiple touch-ups over and over and even then I can't get the smooth finish I get with a DE razor. So I am trying a few other razor brands in the Twig.

Use a sharp blade. One of the great advantages of the safety razor shave is that you use one blade at a cost of perhaps 50 cents each so you have no excuse for leaving a dull blade in your razor. I’ve been looking at more videos and instruction manuals, and apparently the razor works better held flatter to the face with minimal pressure to directly activate the pivot. Instead, I was holding the angle with the reference surface itself flat to my face making it work more like a standard safety razor with the pivot acting in the background. I find it ironic that it’s taken years to figure out the best angle to hold this razor when it’s supposed to have a built-in angle by design, and find the learning curve to be similar to a standard safety razor.

Shower before, soak razor and brush in warn (not hot) water in sink, apply shaving cream and even if your technique is not perfect this razor is very forgiving. Only strict word of advice is don’t press hard. Just let the razor do the work. If you get that angle right it takes almost no pressure for the razor to do it’s thing
