The La Sportiva TX Guide distinguishes itself from the rest of Sportiva's TX line with its stiffer midsole and trail running shoe last. It also has a narrower toe box than its cousins. The result is a shoe that climbs incredibly well &#40;for an approach shoe&#41; without sacrificing hiking comfort or support for heavier, climbing guide-sized loads. A precise toe box is the first thing we noticed when scrambling in the TX Guide. Its shape gently places the big toe in the power position, so the shoe feels more balanced and sensitive, without being radically asymmetrical and uncomfortable like a climbing shoe. The super-stiff midsole makes edging feel more secure and standing in aiders more comfortable. These shoes are equally adept at big wall climbing as they are for long ridge scrambles. 
The narrow toe box that makes these shoes excellent for climbing will cause many wider-footed climbers to look elsewhere, especially if long approaches &#40;4 hours with a heavy pack&#41; are more of a priority than pushing technical grades in their approachies. We tested the synthetic version, and unlike the leather TX4, there is little room for stretching or expansion when your feet swell on a long hike. Though they're somewhat pricey for an approach shoe, we think the working guide will appreciate these kicks every time they can avoid changing into climbing shoes — and for those who have narrower feet, these shoes will be perfect for just about everything thanks to their trail running shoe last.

If you’ve been around climbing for long enough, chances are you remember the La Sportiva Ganda. A favorite of experienced climbers and guides, the streamlined Ganda was the shoe to wear while climbing 5th-class rock. Now, after a multi-year hiatus, the TX Guide brings a high-tech approach shoe back into Sportiva’s lineup, and we like it a lot. Compared to the TX4 above, the Guide is lighter, leaner and more sensitive, and stickier too—in other words, it’s a far better option for technical climbing and scrambling. Remarkably, it’s also soft and flexible (touted as having the cushioning of a mountain runner), which is great for comfort and speed on the trail.

It’s important to note that the TX Guide is built on a different last than other models in the TX lineup, which is considerably narrower in the toe box. Further, you do give up some durability with the mesh upper (Sportiva also makes a slightly heavier leather version), and the Guide’s sticky sole won’t hold up quite as well as stiffer rubber compounds. But these tradeoffs make it wildly impressive on technical rock: our tester forgot to pack her climbing shoes for a six-pitch 5.10+ in Washington State’s alpine, and the Guide proved to be a surprisingly capable substitute. Our favorite approach shoe is the La Sportiva TX Guide. This shoe can do it all, from climbing moderate rock pitches to hiking through rugged terrain and aid climbing on big walls. It is supportive, lightweight, and precise, excelling in every movement test we threw at it. The sole is perfectly designed for smearing and edging, and the foot locks into place thanks to a narrow lace pattern. These shoes are nimble climbing machines, and they walk and hike pretty well too. 
One major downside is construction quality. We noticed alarming construction defects early in our test period, and confirmed these fears with other users. However, we still think these shoes are worth the DIY shoe care that might be required, because of their jaw-dropping climbing performance that can eliminate the need to bring climbing shoes on many objectives. Also, the shoe is narrow, and wide-footed users report discomfort in the toe box. The Salewa Wildfire 2 is a good choice for an all-around approach shoe for those with wide feet.

 The Guide Tennie has a devoted following among climbers and does shave off about an ounce per pair, but the TX4 is more comfortable, hikes better, and gets the edge from us as our favorite leather approach shoe.  Leather approach shoes like the TX4 and Guide Tennie are at the top of the pack in terms of durability and fit, but the synthetic Arc’teryx Konseal FL 2 isn’t far behind. At 1 pound 3.6 ounces, the Konseal FL shaves weight with a ripstop mesh upper and streamlined, climbing-focused build, making it even more capable on technical rock than the TX4

 Additionally, the leather upper gives a tangible boost in protection—especially compared to popular mesh approach shoes and lightweight hikers. The Grand Canyon was rife with rocks and sharp plants along the trail, but the TX4’s leather guarded my foot where the mesh of the TX3 would have fallen short. Scrambling With a leather upper, stiff and sticky sole, and generous rand along the base of the foot, the La Sportiva TX4 also excels on technical rock. While scrambling the low-5th-class approach to the Monkey Face at Smith Rock, I was able to perch on small edges and smear on slab with confidence

 I even consider the TX4 light enough to carry up a climb on my harness, especially if I need support and protection for the approach or descent (such as for the rugged canyon approaches in Red Rock or glacial commute in the Bugaboos). If I’m climbing in an area with simple access (think Squamish or Tuolumne), I’d instead opt for a lighter design like Sportiva’s TX2 (1 pound 2.6 ounces on my scale) or the Evolv Cruzer Psyche (1 pound 0.8 ounces)

 However, now that I’ve tried it, there’s no going back. The leather upper of the TX4 offers much more durability at an insignificant cost and weight increase (less than an ounce and $5). Further, like the Five Ten Guide Tennie, the TX4 doesn't lose its shape when wet, which is a common complaint with leather approach shoes (the La Sportiva Boulder X, in particular). All told, La Sportiva’s TX4 is a thoughtfully designed shoe that will stand the test of time

The La Sportiva TX Guide is made from an Ultra-weave Jacquard, sewn with TPU PU-Tech-lite Heel & Toe Caps. In English, a synthetic top reinforced with thermal plastic urethane. This gives the shoes much superior breathability compared to other approach shoes. I personally found they got much less stinky over a summer of use, a common problem many climbers can relate to

 These things are stiff, like very stiff, and they stay stiff. Keep in mind when sizing that the toe box does not “give” or “pack out” much. Unfortunately, I have a medium-wide foot and these shoes never really relaxed enough for me.

 Combined with the oddly-long toe and narrow forefoot design, I think this shoe could benefit from some minor tweaks in the future. Unfortunately their reliability leaves something to be desired and its for that reason I can't bring them on any extended backcountry trips.

I acquired these shoes about a month ago and they are exceeding my expectations of comfort. I have been walking around in hiking boots as my approach shoes and while they are very supportive, they aren't really the most fun for my feet. When I bought the TX Guides my feet thanked me. I could hike with out my feet fatiguing
