Best Approach Shoes of 2022 - GearLab

When thought of as a hiking or trekking shoe this category wouldn’t matter that much, but as an approach shoe we must consider how pack-able the shoes are when it’s time to don more technical rock climbing shoes and in this case these shoes are quite heavy and bulky. While that extra weight equals more support and durability there is a definite trade off if you need to clip these to the back of your harness or stuff them into a small climbing pack.

 Because of this added weight and stiffness these would make a great early Spring/Summer alpine approach shoe if you need to occasionally cross snowfields. They will be able to edge in Spring snow better than lighter weight models and would match well with some Kahtoola Microspikes when added traction is needed.

Comfort is most important. Comfortable boots will let you enjoy your hikes and get you out there more often. Try on several brands, styles, and models. As for brands, I would recommend LA Sportiva,  Merrell, Keen, Salomon,  Vasque, and Asolo

Suggestions for hiking boots

 I tried Lowa this round. So I will see how many years they last. The Swiss swear by La Sportiva for its resoling.

Discovered that I had $240 in REI dividends today, so my Salomon 4D 3 GTX and Darn Tough merino wool socks came out to just $9!!! Happy deal hunting everyone!

 So really nice lacing system with the Boulder X, moving down to the middle of the shoe we've got a board lasted construction, so that gives the shoe a lot of really good stiffness and torsional rigidity. So it's going to maintain its edging power and climbing precision when you're on those more technical climbs. We do have a micro pore, EBA midsole. So it's a really high density, really thick midsole, but it retains a really light weight

 So that's going to offer really good protection for those steep rocky climbs or possible 5th class, climbing so really nice extra grip extra durability, all the way around. With that rubber toe Rand, we do have a really unique lacing system, with the shoe kind of what they've incorporated into some of their climbing shoes with La Sportiva. It'S got kind of that methis lacing system. That goes all the way back around behind the heel

 It is a little water resistant, although not fully waterproof, so it will shed some light precip. But again it's not a fully waterproof shoe. So keep that in mind we do have a mesh lined rear section, so the back half of it has a really nice mesh lining adds a lot of padding and comfort to the shoe and the tongue of the shoe is also mesh lined and padded. So again you get really nice comfort with the boulder X in that back half, where your heel and and the top of your foot is, we do have a fully wrapped rubber toe ram

 We do have an Eevee, a sock, liner or insole, and that's really resilient and comfortable, so it rebounds nicely to provide optimum comfort. So nice insult and a nice midsole in the shoe here, moving down to the outsole we've got a durable but soft and grippy Vibram outsole, it's great for those smoother ascents or those really technical, Rock scrambles. It'S going to give you really good smearing power with its low profile lugs, you get a lot of surface contact there, so really nice grip and it's a little softer than some of the other Vibram rubbers. So again, that's going to really enhance the grip that you get from the boulder X

La Sportiva Men's Boulder X Approach Shoes

While we love Sportive products in general these shoes run small and we waited too long to return this pair. So we had to modify the back with a slice down the heel section.

The La Sportiva TX4 is a fantastic choice for big wall climbing or when you need to carry big loads. The leather uppers are up to the task of scraping up thousands of feet of granite, while the stiff and supportive midsoles can take you to your dream wall, whether it be roadside or deep in the backcountry. These shoes are comfortable for hiking and standing all day, and they climb well enough for low-5th class terrain and alpine scrambling. 
They aren't the best climbing shoes on the market, and their heavy weight makes them a poor choice for carrying up and over multi-pitch routes where weight is a concern. That said, the TX4 is the shoe we want to be wearing while schlepping heavy loads to the base of El Cap, standing in aiders, performing occasional free climbing moves, and carrying the whole kit back down to the meadow. Are long approaches to remote backcountry objectives in your future? The TX4 has the support and comfort to take you there, heavy pack and all.

 I'm Tom from Cotswold Outdoor in Harrogate and I am really excited to talk to you about the

 La Sportiva TX4 Mid Gore-Tex. I'm absolutely in love with this men's boot. I've had a pair

 for about three years now and I absolutely love the precise feel you can get with it.

 It has fantastic lugs which shed the mud very easily if you are walking into a climb that's

 a bit further away, easy climbing, scrambling and it's also got La Sportiva's climbing zone

 so you can get a really precise feel on smaller holds when you are scrambling.

 It is a Vibram sole as well with a midsole for a little bit of impact cushioning.

 It is fantastic because it doesn't sacrifice feel or precision at all.
