In opinion if you can afford it that's where I'd start for fun and comfort and general trail riding. Just get a trail bike like the process 134 or the fuel ex for example. Full suspension is going to be easier on your back and more fun through tech and chatter and it'll be easier to stay in control going faster. You'll be able to do more descending before fatigue sets in

Hello! Been lurking around this thread and finally decided to make an account and ask some questions about mountain bikes. I have always been interested in them but never got into them due to the sheer amount of bikes that are offered and the cost. Been riding a fixie for several years, but always talked about trail riding.

Recently a friend bought a gravel bike and we talked about how we always wanted to go to bike parks, so we'll be taking the plunge soon. Money is still a factor for me to really get into it, but I'm now able to put a little more into it.

Personally, I am looking into a hardtail cause I believe that full suspension is not something I'll need since I am a novice. I've noticed a wide range of categories which were confusing, but after reading the faq, it made a little more sense.

Is it a dumb idea to buy a mtb that's in the 2k range? Or would something like a GT Aggressor which I found on sale recently be a better buy? Is there a benefit to buying from a big brand or specialty company? 

I appreciate any feedback and hope to enjoy this sport with you all :)

Following modern trends, Polygon lengthened the reach and wheelbase, slackened the head tube, and steepened the seat tube, bringing the Siskiu's geometry up-to-date. These changes have made it more stable at speed and confident on the descents, yet it still retains its maneuverability, responsive handling, and versatility. The steep seat tube angle lines the rider up in an efficient and comfortable seated position and the Siskiu T8 is an effective and well-rounded climber. Thanks to Polygon's consumer-direct sales model, this affordable bike comes with a build kit you'd normally find on bikes that cost significantly more. We feel the quality component spec and stellar all-around performance make the Siskiu T8 an exceptional value.
We found little not to like about this versatile and well-rounded ride. Our biggest gripe was the touchpoints of the bike, most notably the grips and the saddle. The grips felt thin and firm, and they didn't do much to dampen vibration or enhance comfort. The saddle also felt short, and it had a unique shape to its tail that we didn't get along with on steep descents. The Tektro brake levers also weren't our favorite, with a somewhat cheap look and feel. Otherwise, we were very impressed by the new Siskiu T8, it's an affordable mid-travel ripper that looks and performs well above its asking price.

Best Mountain Bikes Under $2500 - GearLab

My goal was to lose 75 lbs and when I did, I could get a brand new mountain bike.  Today after 4.5 months I weighed in at 224.8 lbs and get to order my new bike

I do have a concern about warranty since I wouldn’t be buying it from a local bike shop

Looking for a solid, rideable, 29er full suspension trail bike that also has a modern frame/geometry that I can get away with upgrading as things break or by feel as time goes on. Looking to get a new bike so I can ride it for a good handful of years.

Commencal Meta TR 29 - Love the look and frame but the origin is lacking in specs off the bat.

 They've never felt good to me when riding them. This one is kind of trail bike in suspension length, but enduro in frame geometry.

 My recommendation is to either go for the Deore build, or bump up to the SLX build. The Shimano 1x12 drive train operates so much better than SRAM. The pedaling efficiency of the DW linkage and that the bike feels natural to ride is the selling point for me on top of not being overly expensive.

Sorry for the long post.  I’m looking for a new bike after not riding for over 15 years.  My current bike is a 1996 Klien Mantra Pro that was part of my compensation package when I built the Klien website for Gary Klien back in 1995.

Over the pandemic I started watching a bunch of mountain bike focused YouTube channels and realized just how much mountain biking had changed.  Not just the bikes themselves (modern geometry, 29” wheels, disc brakes, no front derailleur) but also the places to ride.  No more riding on hiking trails but riding on trails that were actually made for biking.  

Seeing that I had several mountain biking areas close to me I decided to get my Mantra Pro tuned up and go riding this last Memorial Day.  Sunday, the night before I decided that it might be a good idea to ride around the neighborhood and get used to the braking and shifting again.  Got on my bike and the suspension bottomed out.  Tried to tell myself that the shocks just needed more air, but the truth was at 300lbs, I was just too heavy for the bike.  So on June 1st Memorial Day instead of going riding, I started getting in shape. I made two changes and a goal.

1. No more late night snacking
2. Exercise every day with the goal of hitting 10,000 steps

My goal was to lose 75 lbs and when I did, I could get a brand new mountain bike.  Today after 4.5 months I weighed in at 224.8 lbs and get to order my new bike.  I plan to get down to 200 lbs eventually but expect that last 25 to take a bit.

So I just turned 56, am down to 225lbs, and want to get back into mountain biking and am looking for advice on which bike to get.  To put in snowboard terms, I’m a green rider now with aspirations for the blues but probably won’t hit the blacks. Here are the top bikes on my list. I’ve got some longer travel bikes on there because even when I hit my ultimate goal weight of 200lbs, I’m still going to be a big guy.

Getting my first new mountain bike

 I recent took the plunge on a Polygon Siskiu T8 which was $3,500 AUD (should be sub $3k for you in the States) and it’s changed the game. Modern geometry, dual sus, better drivetrain. Despite the burlier stuff it enables me to do, it overall feels safer. You actually have traction, especially over rock gardens, and plenty of it

 And it still climbs like a champ. The biggest issue in that regard is the extra weight I need to shed!

I've recently gotten back into mountain biking (broke some bones -- thought I was done) and resurrected my ancient hardtail (a Raleigh M80, 1998? vintage) by swapping in a 1x SLX drivetrain. Still on old Rockshox Judy (no idea what model, 100mm travel?), rim brakes, and bomber Rhyno Lite Rims. Head tube angle must be in the 70s -- and I've been sent over it many times.

But, I still have a blast riding it on my local trails (Wisconsin), often beating friends with full suspension. It's light (27 lbs?) and climbs well. Maybe I'm deluding myself, but I think I may have actually developed some technique to deal with its shortcomings. The only times I'm clearly over my head are on steep drops (over the handlebars again) or in larger rock gardens (just get bounced to oblivion). Every ride, though, ends with a big smile and only light injuries.

I continually break one of the commandments, though -- coveting they neighbor's full suspension bike. It looks faster. It *is faster* (can't stop looking at who's kickin' my a$$ on Strava). I imagine bigger jumps and drops would be on my tick list. That looks like fun. I could even try tubeless and not have to fix so many flats. Maybe it's time.

So, I think I'm going to drop $2-3k on a "entry level" full suspension bike. Something downcountry or XC-ish trail. 29". 

* Will I really have $2-3k more fun on this bike?
* Will I kill myself chasing more speed on it? 
* Will I look back with disbelief that I rode the hardtail for so long?

Please, please, talk me out of spending $2-3 grand.

Please...talk me out of spending $2-3k on a full-suspension bike

Siskiu T8 owner here. Polygon Siskiu T7 and T8 are two of the best “bang for the buck” bikes available. Context your skill level and type of terrain you’re wanting ride would be helpful… but unless you’re climbing steep, multiple mile ascents to go down gnarly EWS/DH caliber downhills, it will be great.

After months of research and trying to stretch my so little fund, I set my eyes on Polygon siskiu T7. Wanted the T8 but can't, so should I pull the plug on this?. Please Any objections, suggestions or recommendation? Reason I am choosing T7 is the value per dollar parts it has compared to other MTB in the market on this price range.

Going from hardtail to full suspension, budget can only stretch out to Polygon siskiu T7.

 Fits and Feels great for the limited street test riding so far! Will update after some trail riding...

Siskiu T8

 After a couple hours of trying to get the derailleur adjusted there was no hope. I could not get the bike to cleanly shift between all 12 gears. I had to take it into a local bike shop that had the proper tools and know-how to get the bend fixed. I don't know if the damage was from shipping or not

If you're looking at this bike it's probably because the price point is awesome for what you get. It's also the main reason I bought it. My bike (Jan 2022) came pretty much as expected but with better/upgraded Shimano brakes. Mine came with the Vee tires and I have not tried to go tubeless yet so I can't speak to that experience
