So the water is still only going through the center 2 inches of the coffee grounds. The other grounds are wet, but they're not getting enough contact to effect adequate flavor extraction. This is evidenced by the fact that I have to use twice as much coffee grounds in the Technivorm as what I use in my straight up manual pour over. The coffee is not as hot as I would personally like when drinking hot coffee, especially if adding cream or milk. Also as other reviews have mentioned the brew time is longer than other coffee makers of this type by about 5 mins or so. I have tried the dark vs medium roast setting and can't tell any difference but I might not be the best judge since I can't taste the September vanilla winds with hints of blackberry in the grapes that make up my wine either lol. So given the high price of this unit I don't really know if I'd recommend it over an other much cheaper non pour over drip coffee maker

They aren't actually "used" at all - usually it just means the box has damage - however sometimes there is more to it than that so read the item description carefully! In my case it was just box damage and the coffee maker was in perfect new condition! Great bargain for me! On brewing - I watched some "expert" videos on recommendations about how to brew in this machine. Some people recommended closing the drip valve and stirring at specific intervals of the brew etc - I tried all of these methods - and I did not care for the outcome. What works best for me is to use a standard "American" ratio of 2T coffee to 6oz water. This takes some figuring out and some approximation because the cups listed on this machine are 4oz cups - so you'll have to do math (the horrors) - but that's the best ratio I've found for my own personal preference

Now with the second maker, the coffee warmer still does not keep the coffee hot (I think this is some sort of design flaw), but now if I put water in the tank, to make coffee later, the water leaks out of the tank into the coffee pot. WTH? I guess I'll try getting in touch with Kitchen Aid again and see if I can get a replacement, but it is quite likely that the warranty is over. I had a Bunn coffee maker that lasted 10 years but didn't make coffee that tasted as good as this coffee maker can make it, but at least it was well worth the money in terms of longevity. I always start out my brew with the basket closed, will take a spoon and stir the hot water and grains before I open up basket to start pouring out. Also, you will NEED to buy a grinder. I purchased one from Walmart for $15 and this little grinder works the bees knees. A fresh cup of incredible coffee starts with the beans and grinding them yourself is a must

Lastly, the price is little too high for the build quality. Kitchenaid is clearly marking up these machines because of the SCAA certification, but the actual build quality is on-par with Kitchenaid's lower end machines. The value just isn't quite there. The price point should be around $130-150

If you have more than one coffee drinker in you family definately go with the 10 cup size. Is it worth the price? If it lasts more than 5 yrs I will say yes, I havent had luck with cheaper models in the past so we'll see.
