Kelty Cosmic 20 Degree Series Review

 It was May near Boulder River off 530 (assuming OP is also a Washingtonian) and that’s when my n00b ass learned the hard way about down fill power (I have since swapped for a FF egret 20 YF) and the critical differences between ground and air temps. If the ground had been warmed up all summer and there was a cold snap, I would have likely been okay. It was May and ground temp was probably just about 40°. Cold hips and back all night

I’m looking to winter camp at Rainier this weekend where it’ll be sunny and 45 F during the day with lows of around freezing. However, there’s still snow on the ground. Would I still need a sleeping pad with a R value around or above 5? I have a Nemo tensor insulated (R3.5) and I’m debating whether or not to pick up a CCF pad. 

Also, I have an overstuffed FF Petrel 10 which is probably overkill for the temps but my 30F REI quilt won’t be warm enough. Would warmer bag be able to overcompensate for the less insulated pad? I’ve seen the reverse of this question asked before but not the other way around.

<p>Edit: so I went and picked up a CCF pad (thermarest z lite sol) so I could test with and without it. I was reading in my tent with just my nemo tensor and I could definitely feel losing heat from the bottom, but it wasn’t terrible. I also noticed that even with the CCF pad, as I went to sleep, it wasn’t super cozy. However when I woke up in the middle of the night to pee and also in the morning, I was super toasty with my stacked pads and I was only wearing my base layers. Not completely sure as I didn’t go to sleep without the foam pad but I think it would’ve been fine without it as my sleeping bag was super warm and I wasn’t wearing my puffy or any other layers. The foam pad makes it cozier for sure though. Two others on this trip had sleeping bags that weren’t warm enough even with the stacked CCF + air pads, so if you’re not sure on how warm your bag is then I wouldn’t risk it.</p>

r/Ultralight - "The Weekly" - Week of April 11, 2022

Used this bag several times now in a range of temperatures so feel I like can give a good review. Probably the best thing about this bag is that, for the price, it comes with DriDown, which resists moisture in humid or damp air (does not prevent your bag from getting soaked if exposed to rain though). Solid bag for late fall camping, but, this is not a 20-degree bag.

 The pocket in the bag is not big enough for my iPhone 7 Plus, really disappointed about that (large phones won't fit). Zipper is often difficult too, bag is not roomy for my 6 foot, 180-pound frame, I am basically at the limit of fitting in this bag and would only recommend the regular size to someone smaller than me. This bag functions adequate for me at a solid price, but I also wouldn't buy it again if I had to get another bag.

 I just knew any lower temperature and I needed to start adding layers to my legs. The "20 degrees" is "you won't die but you'll have a rough night". The pocket in the bag is not big enough for my iPhone 7 Plus, really disappointed about that (large phones won't fit). Comfortable only to lower 30's. DriDown is nice. Pocket not big enough for most phones.

 I own synthetic and down - down is way better for size, weight and warmth so bite the bullet and get down especially for fall or winter camping.

 Used a good pad to keep me warm. Love the little pocket to hold my cellphone. Nice stuff bag and very lightweight.

I just received this sleeping bag. I will update when I go backpacking next week- but my biggest concern was that it says it fit up to 5'8"..

5'9" and I fit!

 Is a decent value for the money but I'm unsure if it was rated correctly. I will still use this but maybe just in warmer weather.

A number of leading ultralight tents are built with Dyneema—the high-tech fabric commonly used in boat sails and praised for its strength-to-weight ratio—and the Zpacks Duplex is best in class. With an incredibly low all-in weight of just 1 pounds 5 ounces (counting stakes and using two trekking poles for support), it’s by far the lightest tent here, yet still sleeps two and includes a bathtub floor for protection from the elements. In use, we found the Zpacks to feel decently roomy for its weight with a 48-inch peak height, and you can adjust the dimensions fairly easily depending on the campsite and conditions. In the end, no ultralight tent is perfect, but the Duplex is a high-quality option that has been relied upon by serious thru-hikers for years.

What are the shortcomings of the Zpacks Duplex? We’ve had no issues with water entering the tent—even while camping in snow—but the open sides and thin materials definitely can make it feel drafty in certain conditions. Second, with a trekking pole design you don’t get the steep walls of tents like the Copper Spur above, making the Zpacks a feasible but cramped option for two backpackers. And third, setting up the tent is more complicated than with a freestanding model, so we recommend practicing before heading out to make sure you know how to get a taut, even pitch. I want bug protection and rain protection because I don't like bugs (f ticks) and sleeping out gives me the creeps sometimes, so not really into the tarp and bivy. It seems to me like the Zpacks Duplex (occasionally bring my wife or a friend) would be a good option, being 19oz and having bug and rain protection integrated (not a tarp or bivy system, so it's simpler i.e. one piece)

Gossamer The Two vs. Zpacks Duplex

 One of the biggest benefits to the Dynamo material is that it's waterproof. This tent is 100 waterproof. I've never had any sort of leaking. I've had no issues

 You don't have to worry about the coatings aging and having to be reapplied. There's very little here with this tint that's going to age and that's not the case with copycat versions of this tent. I know that I've said a lot in regards to this tent, so let me wrap this up. in the end: this is a very impressive tint

Everyone Copies This Tent For A Reason - Zpacks Duplex Ultralight Tent Review

 So I won't go into any more specs on it because I'm sure you can find a lot of information out there about it. Let's talk about my opinion of this tent after 3,000 miles on the trail and what I like about it and what I don't like about it. So first off, obviously what I love about the tent is how insanely lightweight and roomy it is. ZPacks Duplex 3,000+ Mile Review

 However, the ONE thing that is bad about BOTH tents is the way the end tie outs are sewn and sealed. The tents BOTH leak at the tie out points. This is due to the way they are sealed. It seams as if the seam seal was applied FIRST and then the tie outs sewn into the fabric

UPADATED AGAIN: I have purchased both the 1 and 2 person tent. Seems like very well quality and lightweight. However, the ONE thing that is bad about BOTH tents is the way the end tie outs are sewn and sealed. The tents BOTH leak at the tie out points

 The tent leaked at both ends where the tie outs are sewn into the fabric. These points are seam sealed, so I do not know why or how it leaked at both points. The water on the floor of the tent was about the size of a quarter. I have since sprayed all of the fly seams and the tie out points with silicone treatment

Very lightweight.

 So we just/\s/want to lower that down and make sure you're/\s/ not getting rain splatter and wind coming/\s/into the tent so we'll just open the doors. We'll take our trekking poles which/\s/are set to around 120 centimeters now/\s/ Zpax recommends 122. But for a storm pitch you/\s/can come down to 110 or maybe even lower and/\s/ you can see that just brought us down a bunch. So/\s/now we'll just tighten this guy line a little bit/\s/ redo our doors, tighten our doors, you can/\s/see how much lower that even brought us/\s/ Now if we go ahead and do the same to the other/\s/side or we could technically even bring this lower/\s/ and we could bring yeah, if it was really storm and/\s/then we'd want to bring this in basically as tight/\s/ as you can for the doors
