You are looking for a ski that is stable at speed but good in powder, stability means weight. I think you are on the right track looking around mid 100's width for versatility. If you go too wide you are going to have a weird quiver and you can always add a really great dedicated deep day ski later on, think K2 reckoner 122, K2 Mindbender 116c, Bent Chetler 120 or w/e.

I'm an advanced skier when it comes to groomers, I've skied the past few years on 86mm under foot skis and primarily stuck to the groomers. I want a second pair of skis to get more fun out of the deep days, ski in powder bowls, trees and tight terrain. I will primarily ski Stevens Pass and Whistler.

Last year I demoed Rossignol Black Ops Sender and thought they were a step in the right direction, but I'm not sure if they are enough ski for me. Should I get something that is even wider? I regret not demoing wider skis, but I had no idea what to expect moving from my 86mm.

Other skis I'm looking at:
- QST106 these seem very similar to the Senders I demoed but have extra mm underfoot. Would they behave similar?
- Black Crows Anima 115 - significantly wider, I have no idea what to expect out of these, but reviews make it seem like a good fit for me. Except they mention the ski isn't good in powder with a forward stance. Coming from years of carving, I ski in a forward stance by default.
- Dynastar M-Free 108 - I liked the reviews, but I also like speed and seems like they don't have good stability at speed. Otherwise they seem interesting, definitely a different ski from the one I own.

 Hi everyone, my name is Jed Yiser. I'm the ski product director for K2 Skis, here to talk about our Reckoner 122, which is the widest ski in the Reckoner collection and really focused on being the most stable, playful, and confidence-inspiring sort of freestyle powder ski out there. A lot of what gives the Reckoner 122 that ability is the way we've implemented spectral braid on the Reckoners. So what we're doing is we actually have a looser braid in the tip and tail to allow that ski to release and butter nice and easily, but it goes to 45 degrees underfoot, so you still get really precise power transmission to the edge

 The Reckoner 122's sort of blend of playfulness and stompability comes from its flex profile, where the tips and tails are soft and sort of supple enough to let you butter and press around, but still stable enough so that you can send it off of cornices, big backcountry booters, and land switch off of anything.  On groomed snow, I struggled to find the right stance for the ski. If I got too far forward, I usually found the turn initiation to be unpredictable. If I tried a more centered stance, I would often get kicked into the backseat pretty quickly, and lose control of the rest of my turn. All in all, this was a tough ski for me to have a good time on

One of the technologies you'll find in the Reckoner 122 is our Reckoner-specific spectral grade, and what spectral grade allows us to do is it allows us to really tune the torsional stiffness of the ski throughout its length by varying the fiber angle of this spectral grade material. So in the Reckoner spectral grade, we've got a very loose angle in the tips and tails, which are going to make the ski a little bit more surfy and playful and really be beneficial for butters and presses, while underfoot, you've got plus minus 45 orientation, which is going to increase the torsional stiffness and really help with your ski control and stability, especially on harder snow

 Any depth of snow, these things are going to pop right up and stay on top of. And that taper shape too. So the widest part of the ski, they really bring it down to right about here. So just this massive shovel, you know, just a ton of surface area here at this part of the ski

 We do see a pretty nice, forgiving flex, so when you're in the powder, it's nice to have the ski bend with the snow, and that's what you're going to get with this 122 here. You know, no metal in this thing, so it's going to wiggle around pretty darn good for how wide it is. Not too heavy either for the amount of just sheer material in this ski. They do a really nice job with that carbon spectral braid, keeping this thing nice and light, so it's going to be surfy and maneuverable

 Those theories carry through to the tail, long, long rocker, you know, starting about here, pretty gradual, but because it's so long, we do see that pretty dramatic splay in the end. And then in the taper as well, pretty early taper, nice and thin here at the very tail, widest parts down here. So that's going to give the release portion of the turn when combined with the, you know, softer flex due to the spectral braid. All those things combined to make just a really playful exit to the turn

 Welcome to our 2022 ski test. I've got a fun one for you today. This is the K2 Reckoner 122, a new graphics refresh for this year, but still that same pretty one-dimensional, soft, deep, snow-oriented ski, widest one in the Reckoner line, just a fantastic floater, super playful, you know, high-level freeride skiers will pretty much find everything they need in a ski with this Reckoner 122.  So looking at the shape and profile, this is obviously the widest in the Rallybird lineup. As I've pointed out in other Rosignol skis and the Rallybirds, as you can see here we have this air tip technology and the damp tech technology which is just this approach that they take where the tips are a little bit more maneuverable and you can see right through actually, I don't know if you can from there but I can see just the light going through them so it's just this super maneuverable feel from the tips and then you get just full camber underfoot with rectangular full sidewalls so you get that really powerful edge grip and hold underfoot and then you get this kind of dramatic taper and early rise in the tips. In this 104 I believe it's a 13 meter turn radius so pretty short for this size ski and I think what adds to that and what makes it so is that because of this early taper the widest point kind of is closer to the midpoint of the ski so it gives it this shorter more snappy edge to edge and then in the tails you get minimal splay in the tail, definitely more of a partial twin tip directional shape so you really just get a lot of power coming from the tails all the way through the tips of these skis and despite how burly I would consider these skis they are just so damp and maneuverable and that for me just makes for a really well rounded ski for how I like to ski and like I said I had the chance to kind of take them all over in various conditions and they just handled themselves really well on fast firm snow and kind of softer more springy like snow so just a range of capabilities but I would say they're definitely geared more towards expert skiers who want a hard charging ski but one that can definitely you know have some fun and have a playful feel and just make for an all-around awesome time so I really love these skis definitely recommend heading on over to SkiEssentials.com to learn more and we'll see you on the slopes, bye

 So jumping into the construction, we have a Polonia wood core so as we know from lighter wood materials we get that nimble agility maneuverability like I was just saying. We also get a carbon alloy matrix which is kind of criss-crossed along the length of the ski and sits underneath that wood core and it just gives it that extra kind of snap and energy and then we also have a titanal beam that's positioned underfoot and that just obviously is where that power and stiffness and stability comes from. This Rallybird really strays from the others in the Rallybird lineup, has a pretty complex construction and Rosignol really took it a step further and wanted to make this ski just as powerful and demanding as it is. So we have the metal, we have the carbon alloy matrix, we have the wood core foundation and then we also have Rosignol's line control technology which uses two strips of this kind of visco rubber material and it's positioned in the forebody and the tail of the ski and that just maximizes a smooth ride, reduces unwanted vibrations and any chatter and as I've said with the other Rallybirds that is a takeaway that I had just as far as how I felt on these skis compared to other skis that have metal in them, they just really were super smooth, I mean initiating turns and releasing from turns, they jumped right into a turn but then if you wanted to quickly get out of it, I mean they just were really intuitive and really moved well with how I wanted to ski despite how strong and powerful they are at the same time

 I immediately had a serious fondness for this ski. I had the chance to try them before the ski test and then at the ski test and it just further proved that these skis are up my alley and definitely recommend them to expert skiers who are looking for a hard-charging, powerful all-mountain ski but that are also capable of a lot more than that. They're super maneuverable, super damp and smooth, just a really solid ski, loves to go super fast down the fall line. When I was skiing them they just wanted to go yet I felt super in control and then upon bumps and tighter terrain they were just really maneuverable, I felt very comfortable controlling them so just speaking to their well-roundedness and their overall performance, really loved these skis

Great for every condition and terrain

 Not a tremendous amount of splay, but enough to make it so that this is going to be a good floater as well. Not crazy taper, a little bit of early, but definitely that wider part's a little more towards the front. This kind of leads to that more directional characteristic and personality of the ski. And that theory and philosophy carries through to the tail as well

 So this Ti version starts with a Polonia wood core. You get Rossignol's carbon and alloy matrix as well, so that crisscross shape of carbon and alloy material in there really stiffens the ski well, as well as a titanal beam, so that metal found underfoot delivers power, edge grip and torsional stiffness to the ski as well. Also with their line control technology, they get a dual LCT with a VSCO material, which is basically rubber. So two strips of vertical rubber that run through the forebody of the ski and through the tail really help to dampen the vibrations

 This kind of leads to that more directional characteristic and personality of the ski. And that theory and philosophy carries through to the tail as well. So pretty low tail rocker here, minimal splay and minimal taper. So that widest part's just about at the tail there

 Just a great ski here. 13 meter turn radius in this 163. So it does like to turn. You can kind of tell based on that side cut and that bump out in the tail here that this is going to finish a turn pretty darn strongly
