 Welcome to our 2021 ski test videos. Today we're going to talk about this big, awesome K2 Mindbender 116 C. 116 underfoot pretty squarely puts this ski in the freeride and I'll just go ahead and say powder category. This is the widest of all of the Mindbender skis and it uses carbon, hence that C

 So if you're really looking for float, powder performance but also stability, you know, maybe you live somewhere out west and you really like skiing all the open, steep terrain regardless of whether you have fresh powder or not, this is a great choice because even on those lower snow days, it's still going to perform pretty darn well. And yeah, nice and light too for a ski that's 116 underfoot, definitely lighter than the Mindbender Ti models. So super, super fun ski from K2, I have a lot of fun on these, I wish we had, you know, I wish every day was a powder ski so I could ski a ski like this every day. But a lot of fun, if you're looking for a powder ski that can also do a little bit of charging now and then, Mindbender 116C is a great choice

 116 underfoot pretty squarely puts this ski in the freeride and I'll just go ahead and say powder category. This is the widest of all of the Mindbender skis and it uses carbon, hence that C. So with the Mindbenders we get Ti models and we get C models. The ones with C use spectral braid and they also use carbon boost, which is essentially carbon woven into the fiberglass layer of the ski in a longitudinal axis

 So both those are obviously powder skis, they actually both use spectral braid but they use it in slightly different applications. So this Mindbender 116, a little bit more stable at speed, you know, you get actually pretty good amount of camber in this ski, plenty of tip and tail rocker too but those Reckoners have more pronounced rocker and softer flex too. So this ski has kind of proven itself to be a pretty strong ski in even like mixed snow. So definitely good in the powder, you know, you get a great shape for powder, plenty of rocker, some nice smooth early taper through the tips and tails

 If you want to ski fast and smooth in-bounds the whole day then my best bet has been on heavier skis like the Revolt or Kartel/Jeffrey. I'm not the best at freestyle, but I can butter and manage rotations decently well on my Revolt 121s.

Mainly wondering how much does weight effect float and surfiness? 
As well as if a burlier ski is needed for control
At high speeds when in soft snow. 

Not concerned with performance in non powder conditions as I have other skis for that purpose.

Adding a powder ski to the quiver

 And then through the tail, they're a little bit straighter, and that gives the ski more playfulness and surfiness on the end of the ski. So it's built to kind of mirror the titanal Y-beam that they use in the Mindbender 108Ti. They just use carbon in this one to lighten the load, get this thing a little bit more playful, a little bit softer, has a really nice flex to it, and you can tell that this thing is going to float and smear through fresh snow. No problem whatsoever

 Tapered down as well, right about here is the widest part of the ski. That's going to make this thing pop right up out of the snow, give it that really playful and fun personality. We see that same theory applied to the tail as well, very low, long, kind of minimal splay. That's a nod to the directional aspect of the ski, you know the more free ride ones are a little bit more bowed out with more dramatic splay at the end, but these definitely fall in line with that more directional philosophy and combine that with that carbon

 So this one here is the 186 and we are looking at a 22.9 meter turn radius. So that's pretty straight, that's kind of what we're used to seeing for these mid teens, hundred teens underfoot skis, really adds to the free ride playfulness of it. It's neither hooky nor grabby as a result, you can kind of take a straighter line, throw these things sideways, really access all of the performance features of the ski

So obviously the ski is going to work really well for some people and not so great for others.  So it's coming in with a maple and polonia wood core. So the maple is a nice hardwood, damn really solid, but being a hardwood it's pretty heavy. So they pair it with a polonia wood core which is a really lightweight core which keeps this ski nice and light paired with that carbon spectral braid. So a really nice ski for midwinter ski touring or if you're just looking for a nice comfy ski for moshing at the hill

 What K2 has done they've made the shovel of the ski along with the tail of the ski the side cut to be pretty flat so it'll be nice and easy to break loose and you're not gonna feel really hooked and too too hooked into a turn. Yeah so this is the K2 Mindbender 116C from K2.

 You can see nice early rise in the tip and then a little bit flatter of a profile in the tail just to give you some nice sturdiness and a little bit more support especially if you're hucking cliffs and going big you're not gonna wheelie out. So this is coming in the tip 143-116 as the name implies underfoot and then a generous 133 in the tail. So these guys are coming in at a 22.9 meter radius in the 186 length

So the X's in the front lead to more torsional stiffness and then in the back it leads to a little bit more of a drifty feel. And they do flex pretty well

 I mean it's a very consistent when you're just hand flexing it. Like this is exactly what you're looking for out of a powder ski for sure. And then in the tail it's just a little bit more playful from side to side but it does have that, you know, it does have enough support to hold up to stronger more aggressive skiing. It's pretty light too, you know, this is the 179 and for 116 underfoot it's 1818 grams

I think their use of carbon in Polonia really kind of add up to that nice lightweight free, you know, free ride fun in that more directional format

 And then they use their carbon boost stringers that run vertically through the ski and then they use their carbon boost braid technology. So what they're doing is they're altering the flex of the ski in specific areas. So it's a tighter weave or a tighter cross hatching of carbon stringers in the shovel and then it just gets wider apart and through the tail. So it's very much, you know, X's like this in the front and then like that in the tail
