It was 70 degrees and sunny. But on a rainy night, with whining, overtired kids, setup speed is clearly one of Skycamp’s most appealing features. However, because it was so nice out, my kids spent more time SUPing, so the cartop tent quickly lost its novelty.

However, the hardshell stayed on rock solid. I eyed it in the rearview while climbing a gnarly 3-mile dirt doubletrack to the campsite.

That said, Denver’s largest outfitter, Suburban Toppers, told Hoffman that customers request this setup all the time and they have never seen a load issue. That put me at ease, and we didn’t experience any weight issues during our trip.

Let’s start with weight, arguably the Skycamp’s most standout feature. iKamper has figured out how to build in a cushy, king-size mattress and a canvas tent in a hardtop shell at the industry target weight: 160 pounds.

 So very very strong and durable so very sound construction on the tent itself. And one thing that I do love about the mini in particular here is how versatile it is. But then of course closing everything up you can still keep it nice and dark and have that ability going back and forth. Of course also a staple to the iCamp or SkyCamp designs is going to be as you can see behind me the world map just providing that sense of adventure which is awesome

0 mini is going to be 57 and a half inches in length 55 inches in width and then at the rear here at the highest point you have 13 inches in height and the reason why I mentioned that is because when you look at the tent from a side angle you'll see that it naturally slopes from the front to the rear and that's just to help with aerodynamic properties while you're driving to help reclaim some of those MPGs which is really good. The overall weight on this is about 123 pounds and as you guys can see one of the most notable features that has been updated on the exterior of the tent here is going to be the brushed metal which is really nice as far as the badging goes. So those of you who remember from the current lineup has the chrome look with the red lettering now it has the brushed metal which is a really nice accent to the new line of tents. As far as the shell here goes it is a double layer FRP shell which not only provides an insulation quality but it's durable strong and lightweight compared to the cheaper alternative of an ABS shell

If you are hoping for a more affordable rooftop option, the Smittybilt Overlander is a great choice. It is one of the most spacious and comfortable tents we have used and has enough overhead space to allow campers to easily change clothes or comfortably sit up and enjoy the view from one of its many windows. Included perks like an LED light strip and hanging boot bag on the outside of the tent make it more livable and pleasant to use for longer trips. The ladder is extra wide and feels sturdy when bringing gear, kids, or pets up to roof level for the night. And don't let the lower price tag fool you into questioning the quality of this tent. The Overlander is built with durable 600D polyurethane material to weather gnarly storms.
The lower price tag is likely due to a do-it-yourself assembly and installation. The initial installation of this Smittybilt is more complicated than average. The tent itself is pretty heavy, and it only comes with a very basic tool kit. Most of the components come unassembled, and the whole thing just takes more time to complete. Once you have the tent properly mounted, converting it from travel mode to camping mode also takes longer than average, although luckily, it is not too difficult. Our final gripe with this tent is that there is no convenient place to store the travel cover. It removes completely from the tent, which means you must find a place to fold and store it instead of rolling it up and letting it hang from the side of the tent as in other models. However, if you are prepared to devote a little more time to set up and tear down on each trip, the Smittybilt Overlander is an excellent way to adventure on a tighter budget.

Though the Smittybilt Overlander is a more moderaly priced option for those on a budget, but it still comes with several included extras. It arrives with a very cool LED light system that includes 12-volt extension cords that go all the way from the tent to your 12-volt cigarette lighter or an external USB battery pack. Another added feature is the included rubber boot bag that hangs outside of the tent, which is very convenient in poor weather conditions. It also has the widest, sturdy ladder of any tent we tested.
These perks aside, the Smittybilt does have a few weaknesses. It's cumbersome &mdash; weighing in at 144 pounds, it is substantially heavier than many of the tents we tested. You also may need to drill holes to get your ladder in the proper location, depending on the height of your vehicle's rooftop. Drilling metal isn't the easiest task to take on, even if you have the correct tools, and taking power tools to a brand new product is a bit unnerving. Also, the cover must be removed entirely to convert the tent from travel mode to camping mode. With all of the other models in this lineup, the cover either rolled up or was able to be tucked out of the way. Still, while this tent might require a bit more effort, it will save you a sizeable amount of money and still perform at a very respectable level.

 Today we're going to be talking about rooftop tents and more specifically the Smittybelt Overlander XL. There are so many tent options from swags to ground tents, even sleeping in a hammock when you're going out and camping and overlanding, but nothing really is as comfortable in my opinion as a rooftop tent. Rooftop tents give you a nice flat surface to sleep on. Many of them come with a foam mattress, high-density foam mattress inside and the Smittybelt Overlander XL is perfect for us in our size family

 Just depends on your setup and how much you're opening up or not. The Smittybelt Overlander XL is a budget-friendly tent. Well, I say budget-friendly. It all depends on the budget that you have, right? So you can opt for a hammock or a ground tent

 So that is a downfall to me. The next downfall is the retractable aluminum ladder. This thing is horrible. Now they have come out with a new telescopic ladder, which is so much better, but this one on this tent is ridiculous

 We'll start with what I like. I love that it's a rooftop tent. I don't have to worry about sleeping on the hard, uneven ground, worrying about sleeping pads, sleeping bags and animals, insects, all that kind of stuff. Being able to sleep up high on a flat, comfortable surface with a five-inch mattress is super, super nice

 This thing is horrible. Now they have come out with a new telescopic ladder, which is so much better, but this one on this tent is ridiculous. It gets stuck all the time, the pins get stuck, dirt gets in the track, and at the very top when you come out, the top of the ladder, we had to wrap it in tape because it was rough, sharp metal around the edge, and so we would come out, we would scrape up our legs coming out of the tent. That is not good

  Setting up is easy: Remove the cover which has hook and loop to secure it, undo the hook and loop straps that hold the tent together, all six of them, loosen the double D strap that secures the ladder, pull the ladder out to use as a lever and pop the tent up. Adjust the ladder so it is stable on the ground, there are spring loaded pegs that lock into holes in the frame of the ladders, and insert the poles that hold open the awnings.  We found a few problems with the above mentioned straps. Right out of the box we had to repair one of the straps as the thread was pulling free

 With the rainfly removed this gives real ventilation and a view of the stars. We used it with the rainfly attached and the roof open with the screen in place for great ventilation. The tent never felt ‘stuffy’ even when we had everything closed up during a rainy night.  Two things about the rainfly

 Again, the material of the tent itself should be enough ward off up to a moderate rain. Having slept in wet tents before, I don’t really care to find out.  Even if we still had the plastic rails on our Jeep the low weight of the tent would have not exceeded the recommended weight.  At the below $900 price tag I feel that the price overcame the drawbacks. I have written Smittybilt to see what they will do about the cover. It will be interesting to see about their customer service

 As I mentioned, we had to repair one strap right right away and I have a feeling it won’t be the last one. The material and the stitching just don’t feel that strong. The cover is the other weak point. On our sixth night out I found the stitching on one of the corners giving way

 The RTT was delivered on time, install was simple and setup was easy. The construction is sturdy and durable and I cannot find any flaws in the craftsmanship. I’m actually surprised this RTT costs what it does. It’s a steal of a deal

 Weather was coming early in the morning and I did not want to pack it up soaking wet. With my headlamp on I folded the RTT and had it covered in about 10 minutes (again, this was my first time and I was alone). The cover is durable and seals up great. I haven’t been on the road with it

 I have no worries this RTT will last me many, many seasons.  All in all I give this RTT 5 stars right out of the gate. The RTT was delivered on time, install was simple and setup was easy. The construction is sturdy and durable and I cannot find any flaws in the craftsmanship

 I’m 6’3” and have a lot of experience lifting heavy construction material. I was able to heave the 116lbs RTT on to the rack with no problem. However, if I had help I would have used it. I do not recommend doing this on your own

 What we did to fix that was we actually have a two inch memory foam pad that we got on Amazon that we throw on top of this. It's not in here right now because it doesn't come with the tent. I'm just kind of covering what you actually are going to get when you get the tent but it helped out tremendously. Another negative I had to pick one would be that this canopy pole that runs up to support this outer canopy over the ladder is not very heavy duty

It's had this tent for just over a year now and so far we've had it to about six off-road parks and we've used it just about every other month for the past year. So we've got some seat time in it as of now

 I'm just kind of covering what you actually are going to get when you get the tent but it helped out tremendously. Another negative I had to pick one would be that this canopy pole that runs up to support this outer canopy over the ladder is not very heavy duty. Here is the veranda support pole is what Smittybilt calls it. Essentially it's just a cheap flimsy piece of aluminum that supports the canopy area over the ladder

 So that's why we went with the lashing straps. And we will put a link to them in the description below. Another item on the tent that will eventually wear out are the compression straps. There are four of them, two on each end

 This is the cover for the rooftop tent. We haven't had any trouble with wearing spots or tears or rips anywhere on the cover so far. It's made of a very thick material that has a woven component to it, so it's very well made. Also, underneath the inside edge is Velcro

 Is there a way to purchase replacement parts for it? Things like a new rain fly, travel cover, and flex poles that hold up the window and the door awnings. Smittybilt responded fairly quickly, saying, hello, yes, we have replacement parts for our tents. So I don't know how you're supposed to get them. I would suppose that you would contact a Smittybilt dealer or contact Smittybilt directly and arrange it

1 Year Review Smittybilt Overlander Roof Top Tent

 All cars are rated for a max dynamic roof weight of 150lbs (stability and safe turning). Sturdy roof rails are key! Preferably, I’d like to add a 3rd roof rail for weight distribution over the long term. The ladder is a shining spot. It’s nice and wide and safe for those late night restroom trips

 Hello and welcome to Omega Gear YouTube channel and today we're looking into the Smittybilt Overland Rooftop Tent that is currently on top of our RAV4. The first thing I'd like to talk about is actually the very first part to our puzzle which is the rubber, very durable, very waterproof cover that is protecting our tent. It is made out of great material, it is easy to put on, easy to take off, it's foldable and I can put it into the pouch that the tent came with. If I am parked somewhere for a prolonged period of time and I have the tent out this way the cover is not being exposed to the element when you're not using it

 Ž Ž Ž Ž Ž Ž Ž Ž So, let's talk about the cons of the Overlander XL tent, and really and truly, I only have two cons of this tent, and one being the installation, actually installing it, getting it on top of your six-foot or taller truck or jeep, it's going to be kind of tough, because this thing does weigh 140 pounds, and it is awkward, it's really big, so if you can't get your arms out big enough to lift it up and put it up there, it's going to be kind of hard to get it up there. I did it by myself, but I do not recommend it, it was really tough for me, so I do recommend, I mean, even if you have to get four people to help you get it up there, I don't like to set it up against it and push it up there, I just want to set it up there, don't want to scratch, damaging anything, but once you get it up there, it is relatively easy to install after that. Now, that said, I actually came up with this pulley system right here, I built a little cage around my jeep so I can drop the tent onto it and take it off really simple like, so you might want to think about building something like that if you're going to own this tent. And the only other problem I do have with this tent is that when you're jamming down the freeway, you have a big block on top of your jeep, so that means there's going to be a lot of wind noise, a lot of wind noise, and it's going to take a little bit of miles per gallon off of your jeep or truck too, so make sure you think about that before you get it

 If you were looking for a lot of room, get the XL version and not the regular one. Now, setup for this is a breeze. Not only is it easy, but it doesn't take long at all. In this video, it'll show you that I do it in like 20 minutes, but I was taking my time
