 I've got to give it to Ibis for really putting a new perspective on what we can expect from this category. All right. So who is this bike for? Well, it's an incredibly versatile trail bike that's just his home on long, epic rides in the mountains. As it is on a short local lunch lap, I have no hesitation at all taking it to the bike park

 It's a different world these days, and the building wave of bike innovations seems to continuously swell with no crest in sight. But the latest and greatest isn't what defines our enjoyment. And you know what? I'll be the first to admit, I sometimes get a little too lost in the luster of those new shiny parts. So when my buddy Sean at N Plus One Bikes asked if I'd be interested in reviewing the Ibis Ritmo Af, a sensibly priced aluminum frame trail bike that's been wildly praised for the last couple of years, I actually saw this as an opportunity to see just how things have trickled down to the very core of it all

 Still fun to ride. It's not just a great bike for someone coming into the sport, it's a bike that even a seasoned rider can have a total blast riding. It's modern, progressive geometry, can tackle all sorts of terrain and handle very aggressive riding, but it's also not so long in slack that you'll be penalized for approaching this bike with more relaxed attitude. The Dw link suspension design is known for its well-balanced feel and great climbing efficiency, but still sits in that sweet spot of offering calm and controlled performance on the descents

Is the Ibis Ripmo AF still the best value in 2022?

Geometry and suspension are where the money should go, so I applaud Ibis for focusing on that with the Ripmo AF. All the Deore reviews say it works as well as the more expensive Shimano stuff, so it’s really just weight, which shouldn’t matter much for a bike in this category. A top end drive train might save you a pound or so—who cares? And the 4-piston Deore brakes should be great too, no big loss there.

The Ibis has a very good suspension platform and suspension components, although the other components (drivetrain/brakes) are worse than similarly-priced direct to consumer brands. Would you consider the better suspension package worth the trade-off on drivetrain/brakes? What are your overall opinions on the Ripmo?

Opinions on the Ibis Ripmo AF Deore?

Currently my Ripmo AF sits at 39lbs for bike park. Usually around 36 for pedaling season but I am 5'9" 140lbs with a fused ankle and skinny lets due to a motorcycle 10 years ago left me with a limp and a lot of pain so exercising mass/power into my legs is near impossible. I have the endurance but the power just isn't there. I'm ready to upgrade to something lighter and all around better

 So the larger volume uh what they call reactive tune, They've actually been. Foxy Trek have been running this for a long, long time. Initially developed with Penske, the Uh Motorsport Specialists over in America. it's basically a uh, digressive tune within the shock that gives it a really, really kind of crisp pedaling platform, which I've already really felt coming up the hill, but still loads of supple travel

 If you can just see it in there, that's basically a little eccentric flip chip on between the seat stay and the rocker link there that changes the angles by about half a degree, which means it goes from 66 to 6.5 degrees at the head and 75 or 75.5 degrees at the rear. And it also makes a tiny difference in the chainstay length

I've been a Professional Biking Kitchen reviewer for 25 years and today I'm at The Wheelbase Big Demo Day in Hampstead Forest for a super quick first ride on Trek's Alloy all-rounder The Evergreen Fuel Ex8. So I'm just going to do a quick static check on the bike before we, uh, hit the trails properly here at Humsley and as you can see alloy Frame it's the Uh top alloy bike in the range above. Above this you go to the 9

 You know, because there's a real reason for both bikes to exist, which I wasn't sure there was. But yeah, proper crisp charger is this Ex8 And again, going back to the top fuel comparison, I think a lot of that comes from the fact that a larger carcass tires that doesn't make sense in some ways tend to feel stiffer on the same rim even though I'm only running these at 18 psi because you've got more airspace. There's a weird pneumatic rule that means they actually don't conform as easily they feel stiffer. But also, you've got a more supple fork I think in the Sid, and you've definitely got a higher spec rear shock on the top field as well because you've got that Rockshox Deluxe Ultimate

 But a real neat party trick on this hub is the hub itself comes with 54 teeth of engagement and you can upgrade that to 108 teeth of engagement for just a few dollars in pawls and springs. I'll have a link up in the title card above so you can see how to do. that is a hugely recommended upgrade in my opinion. So now that we've taken a look at this Trek Fuel Ex8, let's go ahead and find out what this thing weighs

 Now on the back end of the bike, we've got the Avp suspension, but the way you change the geometry is by flipping this minnow link. so they add in this limiter to keep that from happening. But if we take a realistic point of view, how often are you ever riding with your handlebar turn that far? And at least in my experience, I've never noticed that to be an issue out on the trail. I should mention Trek does sell an adapter that you can add in to run any stem and still retain the knock block feature

 and the extra small and small versions are both available in a 27 and a half inch wheel with a curved top tube for extra standover clearance and then small through double extra large is available with a standard straight top tube like we're looking at today, but with 29 inch wheels, so that means that the rider that would take a size small can decide between a 29 or a 27 and a half based on their fit and how they feel. You also have those two curved top tube options in case you need a little extra clearance. Now speaking about the geometry, we're going to talk about that famed medium large size. So in that size the head tube angle so up there is 66 degrees or 66 and a half and that's because that Minnow link will check out in a second

 you know? This bike is set up with 140 millimeters of front travel, 130 millimeters of rear travel with their Abp suspension design, which is one that does a great job climbing and descending while being reasonably efficient. And then they add in neat things like adjustable geometry with their Minnow link system and a nice modern reach and head tube and seat tube angles to make this bike a really nice all-around performer. Now I might be biased because I do own a 2020 Fuel Ex7 and I've been super happy with it, but checking this out for 2021, I feel like this Fuel Ex8 might be the best value in their lineup. And the reason for that is is this bike is gonna run their Alpha Platinum aluminum frame which does have partially smoothed out welds

 This time I stayed with the mechanic as we took apart the crank. Turns out the bottom bracket was broke on both sides. Honestly I was a long time Trek lover and only purchased a different brand for myself at the beginning of the pandemic because nothing was in stock. Now I would be hesitant to recommend them

There are a couple of manufacturing flaws on the frame that look like small dents here and there. Nothing major but still annoying to find something like this on a new bike.
