Long Story short: This game is absolutely wonderful! This (according to many board game review sites) is set to be the top game of 2017, and I 100% recommend getting yourself a copy, though it will likely be difficult/take some time. Its definitely a HOT selling item and I was lucky enough to pre-order mine a month ago before other folks started seeing it listed on Amazon. This is definitely worth getting and will make a huge hit to your gaming nights! A more detailed breakdown is below. (Note relating to pictures: The game does NOT come with painted miniatures

This game is absolutely wonderful!

 You can then upgrade to the full GH experience later and can bring the classes across so its literally win win. One massive downside to GH is the organisation, the 3rd party inserts are a godsend but can cost almost as much as the base game.

Some friends and I split $25/each and bought my sister Gloomhaven as a Christmas gift - on my suggestion. I bought it from our local shop today and the size &amp; weight immediately had me worried... because **a primary reason we were buying her a new boardgame is that she has a hard time getting people to play Dead of Winter with her (a game she** ***really*** **likes).**

I have no clue where I got this idea, but I thought Gloomhaven would be something she could more easily get people to play. Anyway, I have since learned the error of my ways.

I felt pretty confident that she would at least really like the game and could find a regular player in me (we live together) and at least one other friend. So I've been thinking about doing all the setup/organization for her beforehand... but if I do this, there is no turning back. I can't return the game. And I'm starting to doubt how much she'll like it... I may also be panicking...

I did buy another game for her that's half the price, with much easier setup and simpler rules, just so she has *options...*

**TL;DR - I split Gloomhaven as a Christmas gift. Should I open it up and start the setup/organization process, voiding my ability to return it? Or should I just return it? Did I buy my sister a burden?**

Some additional gaming background on my sister:

* She enjoys DnD a lot. We played regularly for 4 years until I had to quit DMing after going back to school
* She really likes Dead of Winter for it's Co-Op gameplay, Narrative Choice mechanics, Variable Player Powers, and tense *moments*
* Dead of Winter is the only medium weight board game she owns
* The next heaviest is Betrayal at House on the Hill
* Root is a medium weight game she has also really enjoyed
* She seems to really like boardgames and seems to want to delve deeper into the hobby, but hasn't yet
* BANG!, Coup, Pit, Catan, Ticket to Ride, Secret Hitler, and Fake Artist Goes to New York are all games she's liked and enjoyed, but they're all light weight and don't scratch the same itch
* We've gifted her expansions for DoW and Betrayal in the past. We want to buy her a new, medium weight game

Bought Gloomhaven as a gift - Return it or start organizing?

Easy to follow rules on how to play and my jr. high high and high school kids can not stop playing it with me.

Amazing game you must get!

 Using the analog system included in the box is manageable in the early days, but as the game develops this becomes a literal accounting nightmare.  This is not the kind of game you can just pull off the shelf and have a good go at it with uninitiated friends. Expect a newcomer to need a good six hours of exposure at least to come to grips with the genius of this game and begin to truly enjoy themselves.  In short, a gamer (or group) needs to approach Gloomhaven as a hobby with all the commitment a hobby entails to get the most out of this experience

 You then use the top action on one card, and the bottom action on the other. These are then placed in a discard pile and the cycle continues. Once you are unable to play a pair of cards on your turn, you’ll have to rest to get them back. Fortunately, an online search engine allows quick answers to vague gameplay concepts.  Second, as mentioned above, some of the concepts need more explanation than the rules provide

 So I'm gon na take this and I'm gon na set it up just like this, so she walks into the patio. Now, if you notice down at the corner here of the patio, there's a special symbol, that symbol means that it's time for me to draw one of the cards when, as soon as I draw a landing or a room card with that symbol, my movement stops. And I draw the card and perform what that card tells me to do okay, so I walked into a room with this little symbol on it now that means it is time for me to draw a card from the deck that has that same symbol. The little squiggly line that is an event card once my character enters into a room with that symbol

 That'S a closet. I put that in this room so that the other players from here on out where they entered this room, knows that they have an opportunity to do this once during explorers turn the Explorer can roll to dice to open the closet and, depending on what they receive On those two dice rolls tells you what will happen so I take two of the special dice that come with the game, roll them, and you notice that on my dice roll, I have a total of two pips pop up and according to that, it says that I draw another event card, at which time I would draw the next event card, read the flavor text again and follow its rules once all those items are finished. It is the end of my turn and we go on to the next player. Okay

 The task is *almost never* as simple as killing the traitor. Sometimes the traitor character is removed and the traitor only controls monster tokens to achieve his goals. Sometimes, the traitor attacks simply to interfere with the heroes as they attempt to flee a ticking countdown. Sometime his goal is to flee the heroes, get to a certain place, perform a ritual of his own, or other nefarious things

 The Haunting is when one character either openly or in secret (depending on the scenario) becomes the traitor, controlling the monsters and scenario that challenges the heroes (all the other players) while pursuing goals known only to him. The heroes, to win, have a set of tasks to perform. Sometimes the goal it simply to make it out alive. Sometimes to find a room and complete a ritual

  Unlike some of the reviews here, the pieces in my game are sturdy, well made, and in no cases thin and flimsy. And those 1 star reviews pearl clutching at finding ghosts, demonic rituals, the undead, Satanic and/or Chthulic influences, and (gasp) a pentagram room in the game, what were you expecting from a game about hauntings, monsters, and betrayal? Did you not read the back of the box? Go back to playing Clue.  Two caveats: lots of pieces so get some baggies to separate them and it requires at least a folding table to play on. A small kitchen or coffee table isn't going to do it

Your goal is to explore the house and survive the eventual haunt during the first phase. Each player takes turns, exploring different levels of the house

 And we picked up betrayal at house on the hill, which probably wasn't the best idea, because it takes a lot of reading to follow the rules and figure out what to do so. We actually couldn't play it that night when we first got it, but eventually we learned the rules and then we played it yeah when we first started getting into board games. We had that scenario.  So if you decide to move for a door you'll take a tile from the stack and you'll place it adjacent to the tile that you're on you can orient it any way you want, but it has to be door to door and you can't block access to A particular floor you've also got to remember that when you draw the tile, it has to match the floor that you want it's, no good, placing an attic tile. If you are in the basement, you know what i mean, and some of the tiles may have a bit of text on it. So you'll have to follow the text you might have the gallery, in which case you could choose to fall to the ballroom. If it's in the house - and if you do, you must take one diet of physical damage or you might draw the spiral staircase, in which case you may spend two spaces of movement to move to any landing

 So what do we like about betrayal at house on eel? So the first thing that we really like about this game is: it's got a really really good. Fun sense of exploration, the fact that the house is going to be completely different every time you play it is really really wonderful and the expansion adds more sort of tiles more on that later, but it's really really fun seeing how the house progresses that the way That you might have a treehouse next to the ballroom, it's really really funny, and it keeps the game fresh. The fact that the tiles always come out in a different formation, every game. You know i mean second thing we like about betrayal house on eel is the fact that they've, given you pre-painted, miniatures all right, they're, not painted by john blanche by any stretch of the imagination, but the fact that you've got these pre-painted minis in here and they're

 So you might have the secret stairs, and this says that a horrible creaking, sound echoes all around you. You'Ve discovered a secret stairwell, put one of the secret stairs tokens in this room and a second secret stairs token on an existing room. This means that these two secret rooms are adjacent or you might draw the hideous shriek. It starts like a whisper but ends in a soul-rending

 One thing you got ta remember this imperative that you remember is that once you've finished your turn and you've drawn an omen card, then you will have to make a haunt roll and what you do. You'Ll, look at all the number of omen cards that are in play and you will have to roll six dice and if you roll less than the number of omen cards that are in play, then the horn will start. So once the haunt starts, then the haunt revealer will cross reference, both the tile that the horn was rolled on and the omen card that activated the horn and then look at the table in the rule book and that will give them the parameters for the horn. Someone will become the traitor, in which case they take the traitor's time and then the other players will band it together and they will take the hero's book right

Betrayal At House On The Hill Review - Still Worth It?

 Additionally, a room tile and character card have some small tears on them. The characters are all made of cheap plastic. One of them was not set properly and leans so much it barely stands up. I have some friends that own an older version of the game and it is of much higher quality than the game I received

 All of the small monster/item/etc token pieces require you to punch out the pieces from a large sheet. A large portion of my pieces ripped and tore when punching them out. Additionally, a room tile and character card have some small tears on them. The characters are all made of cheap plastic

  I do want to mention that I reached out to Avalon Hill about the torn game pieces and they are sending me replacement pieces. The customer service was great, but the actual replacement parts are going to take 5-6 weeks to ship to me. It's rather disappointing for a new game that is rather expensive to buy. I expected higher quality

5 minutes, that became 2.25 minutes, until we reset with 10 seconds of so in a brand new game. I'm up to start, I roll, start the clock, flip the first time since I'm moving to the first open room and flip over the box omen card, winning the game with about 2.3 seconds left

 Not too thin. Just the right amount of thick. This is indeed a question that I ask myself anytime I consider buying a game. "Sure, it sounds like it's totally fun to play, but how thick is it?" A game that is overly thick just isn't welcome in my house

And sure, a game might be easy to learn, but if it's not thick enough, can it really even be called a game? A diversion, maybe. A distraction, sure

The perfect thickness

 Once either the betrayer's or the rest of the players' victory conditions is met, the game ends and an epilogue wraps things up quite nicely.  This game really captures the B-movie horror/thriller/sci-fi vibe amazingly well! I love thematic games that immerse you in the game and allow you to create your own stories and Betrayal At House On The Hill definitely gives you those tools. The art and all of the components are great and add to the feel of the game. While the combat rules can be a little clunky at times and a few of the clips used to keep track of the various stats were a little loose and wouldn't stick, there is so much about this game to love, that I have to recommend it wholeheartedly! If you like co-op games, exploration, hidden traitor mechanics, or have ever wanted to play out an episode of Scooby Doo or a B-movie, do yourself a favor and check out Betrayal At House On The Hill!
