Toner cartridges for colour laser printers are extremely expensive while ink bottles for tank printers like the Epson Ecotank ET-5800 are extremely inexpensive.

Ink cartridges are so expensive especially when printing a lot of web pages and documents at home in both colors and B&amp;W with previous HP OfficeJet Pros (8600 and 8028e). Also, copying, scanning, and faxing through old fashion phone lines. Do toners last longer? Are laser ones any better even though they cost more?

Time to for an one in one color laser printer instead of inkjet?

 Usually the catch with premium photo printers like this is the crippling cost of the ink cartridges, but with ink tanks, its actually very economical to run. Aside from the high initial cost, it&rsquo;s hard to find fault with the Epson EcoTank ET-8550.

The large 10.9cm colour touchscreen tilts up for easy access and below this you can clearly see the six ink reservoirs. There&rsquo;s something reassuring about seeing how much ink you have in the tank rather than waiting for that dreaded message from your printer telling you to buy more cartridges.&nbsp;

The grey ink that most other printers lack gives the Epson EcoTank ET-8550 a real advantage when it comes to rendering black and white photos. The improved greyscale can make your arty prints look professional, especially when blown up onto A3 paper.

 The paper trays are sensitive to new paper being loaded and the screen prompts you to select the appropriate type and size of media. The Epson Smart Panel app gives you even more control from your smartphone and adds functionality such as templates for greetings cards.

6-ink EcoTank is ideal for A3 photos

 Adding the ink was almost foolproof thanks to the new bottle tips. I did not use gloves and there was no ink stains on me or the desk. Epson really improved this process since their earlier eco-tank printers!  Prnting: regular (text) printing is quick and clear. The pigment black ink is clear and easy to read

All the bell's and whistles for home printing...but expect to pay for these options

.. I tried for a variety of shots, wanting to see the colors this printer put out, as well as the detail -- I love being able to see the storm on the horizon in some shots for instance.

 (When putting the paper into the printer, I also go through the prompts on the touchscreen to tell it what kind of paper I've loaded. Telling it in both places has resulted in EXCELLENT print quality thus far.)  At this point, I just need my rear paper feeder to stop jamming/crumpling paper, and this may well be the best printer I've gotten in a LONG time.  I tried to make a short video showing some of the pictures I was able to print off of this Epson, the pictures have been taken over the past 10-15 years, so some of them are off older digital cameras, some of them were taken with 10x zoom

Pages come out of this printer feeling like they have a lot of ink on them, and I have found after several days some of the 8.5 x 11 borderless printed images have started curling at the edges, I think that is because of the large amount of ink put on the paper.

The cartridges yield roughly 1100 black pages or 740 color pages, which is significantly less than the Epson but still great. There are higher-yield cartridges available, and it accepts third-party ink, which may help save some money. Also, this model comes with a six-month HP Instant Ink subscription, a service that delivers new ink cartridges when you run low. Its printing speed is great overall, but at 16 black pages per minute, it's much slower than the Epson.

Overall, the Epson is a better choice because its ink tanks yield significantly more pages, and it prints much faster. However, the HP is a great alternative if you want something cheaper that can still get the job done.

 I also printed some high-quality wedding pictures and clearly noticed that the Epson printed them out daker and less clarity. In fairness I didn’t dink with the print settings and decided to return. Its possibly my new ET-15000 was just a one off??  So I bought the HP 9025e which had improved results in scanning and printing (see pic) along with all the other functions needed. Scanning Photos, scanning & creating PDF Searchable documents, and quality photo printing were my top requirements

 Luckily for me, the connection magically worked a couple of days later.  And this is about 1 month in.

 I had a problem with network connection to a Synology NAS. I started a chat window for support - no indication of how long it would be. It literally was answered about 10 hours later. I was asleep

 Problems - initial ink tanks are pretty much for demonstration only - will take more than $100 to replace then in the first month. Complete scam, in that regard. - Document feeder does NOT duplex. Not at all clear to me when I bought it, and that pretty much sucks

 Alright so this is basically what the back part looks like. This is where you plug in the cable right here and this is what the back part looks like right here. So right here we have some more cable slots that you can plug in your cable for like the ethernet and etc right here and I really like this part right here because once you guys pull it out, it's very space saving so when you guys are done using it, you guys can push it back in like this and then push the two buttons on the side right here and here to push back in and then you guys can save a lot of space that way too. And then right here you guys can put in like your papers and then your envelopes in here if you guys want to print stuff on top of the envelopes or on paper right here and then the bottom slot right here, you guys have another slot to put paper here as well and right here we have a USB input if you guys want to plug in your cable right here with a USB as well and then here's a brand logo right there

 The bottom one's a little bit more tighter, the second one on top is a little bit looser. So now if you want to put in the ink, you guys want to open this part right here and it should come out right here. So you guys want to turn it on right here, alright so it's loading and turning on right now. So you can see the indicator light right here to show you guys when it's on and this is for the Wi-Fi connection right here for the wireless connection

 Same thing for the back part as well. And the reason for this is because if you guys look at it side by side, this paper is actually a little bit smaller than the one that we have right here. And that is the reason why. So what I do recommend is that if you guys do end up wanting to scan the piece of paper that doesn't fit correctly on here, I recommend using the actual scanner that's on the actual printer itself

 I love like all the different features on the product, how you can print it and scan it like a regular printer. But it's pretty cool because it has all the other features that a lot of other printers doesn't have or doesn't work as well, such as like the wireless connection option to wirelessly print your stuff. If you're getting a color xerographic laser/LED printer^(1), you might want to spend closer to $1,000 than $400. Sub-$500 color xerographic printers tend to have high cost per page, and higher-end cartridge-based inkjet printers like the HP OfficeJet Pro 9025e can be a lot cheaper to run. While this assumes genuine OEM supplies, even with third-party toner, higher-end models will be cheaper to run.

After browsing this sub for a couple of weeks, I’m still clueless as to what brand of laser printer maker allows the use of third party timers. I am leaning towards Brother, but some say that Brother doesn’t let you use third party toners anymore. 

I am a college student who prints off PowerPoints and study guides often. I would say my page usage is 300-400 pages a month. I need the option of duplex printing. 

Does anyone have any recommendations? 

I’ve browsed staples, OfficeMax, Best Buy, etc, and have read hundreds of conflicting reviews. 

I would appreciate any kind of guidance here. 

My price range is $300-$400.

Looking for a laser color printer that uses third party toner

Printer was brand new, new drum, new toner. No signs of previous use. Been in use for 2 months no problems. Considering it cost less than replacement cartridges for my previous HP OfficeJet, I feel I got a great deal!

I'm looking for a laser with specs as noted below. I am replacing a 13-year-old Samsung ML-2510, manufactured in early 2010. I haven't replaced the cartridge in probably 10 years, and it's starting to run out. It seems like the rollers are getting dry and it's having trouble picking up paper. Getting parts and supplies are becoming a problem, and I don't want to invest $70-80 in a cartridge for this printer when it can't pick up paper off the tray.

I'm looking for:

* Small form factor
* No AIO
* No DRM on the cartridge
* Wireless
* Auto-duplex

Something like the Brother HL-L2315DW (assuming no DRM) would be fantastic, except I can't find one actually in stock anywhere (including brother.com) at a price I can swallow. Brother was always my default go-to for users like me when I worked in retail, and I have had family members buy them with excellent results.

If DRM is absolutely required to meet my other demands, I at least want a cartridge that won't expire. If I have to choose between third-party supplies for a printer I can't get and a printer I can get but have to use genuine supplies on, I'll take what I can get as long as I'm not forced to buy a new cartridge or drum after a specific period of time.

Low-Use Laser

 My biggest gripe is the small touchscreen. On the 8620 the touchscreen was almost 4 inches across, on this OJ Pro 9015e the touchscreen is a little over 2.5". It is hard to precisely touch the buttons you want

  I'm currently at 2+ hours and downloading additional software to try to get it to work on my PC trying to access it without the HP Smart app.  Good luck to you if you choose this brand.  Update: Printer now says it is low on ink after printing 46 pages (most were text) and for only about $12/mo HP thinks they could provide enough ink based on my usage. I am going to put the money towards another printer

Printer, if it survives shipping, will work great, IF you can get it to connect.  I got this and didn't try setting it up until it was past the return window..

Expect issues.

 This bad boy cranks out pages like it's going on holiday and it really doesnt eat up that much ink and the cost per page is something like $.029 which is amazing for a non ecotank (cartridge) printer. Setup could not have been easier and I did sub to the Instant ink program because uh FREE Ink for 6 months and you can cancel, why are you guys NOT doing it? If you are an average person who prints maybe once a month or less then this is not necessary for you. However, if you are a teacher or have a home office then you're going to love this printer

 Touchscreen is a nice size and responsive but I dont use it much since I do most through the app. While this is a great connected printer you do NOT need wi-fi, an HP account or a subscription to use it and can get a good ole printer cable ran to your computer. However, the connectivity, ease of use, wi-fi printing from ANYWHERE and "set-it & forget-it" ink program are the main selling points of this printer over something cheaper and older. Overall this printer is a big win for my needs and I will update if something goes wrong but so far it looks like it will last a while
