Elgato Facecam, you will think you're in a studio. That thing is pretty expensive so I don't recommend it to non-professionals but it's badass for those who always demand the best quality.

I got a Macbook Air back in 2019 and the camera quality on the thing is just awful. I've been using the webcam from my desktop when I have to use the mac for video chatting, but I was wondering if it's possible/worthwhile to upgrade the camera hardware itself. Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Is it possible to upgrade the camera in a Macbook Air?

 With the new software update from Elgato, the flickering green lines issue seems to have been fixed. This is a good webcam choice from the ones I’ve tried at a reasonable price point. If you are thinking about doing anything streaming related with OBS and this webcam, would highly recommend getting a Windows PC. Soo many issues trying to use a Mac, which all seemed to go away when I tried the same workflow on a PC, and the CPU usage was dramatically better on PC

97 and got much better results.  Thinking about keeping this Facecam now. It’s easier and more convenient to set up than a DSLR camera as a webcam.  Update: it’s been 4 months now and I decided to keep the Facecam

 The image quality seems similar to a laptop cam, maybe a little better, but less than a cell phone cam. I might return this and get an old unlocked iPhone on eBay and try to use that as a dedicated webcam instead. It would be nice if Apple put iPhone cameras in MacBooks.  Update: used a different usb c to usb c cable plugged directly into laptop and got the same flickering green lines when recording in OBS on the MacBook Air 2020

 Also night quality is slightly grainy but good enough than other versions of face cams that I own!

The Opal C1 webcam is both an exciting indication of things to come in the future of webcams overall and also a niche product that probably won&rsquo;t appeal to most users. If money is no object, then yes, this camera probably takes the best photos and video on this list. At the same time, it costs $300, its software is Mac-only, and said software costs $4 a month.
It&rsquo;s an easy-to-use software suite, sure, and there are convenient features such as bokeh and an AI powered touch-up function. But we&rsquo;ve seen similar functionality for cheaper elsewhere, and it doesn&rsquo;t make you sign up for yet another &ldquo;service.&rdquo;

Would you consider buying a $299.99 webcam? That’s the cost of Opal’s C1, which is now available to purchase on an invite-only basis. My guess is that many of you will say no. Others, who are on the never-ending quest to look good for all of those Zoom meetings, might have a list of questions in need of some really convincing answers, and rightfully so

Opal has good answers to those questions. But having a chance to try the webcam itself was more convincing than any answer I received. The C1 aims to — and mostly succeeds at — supplying DSLR-like image quality (complete with plenty of background separation or bokeh) for far less than a decent camera-turned-webcam might cost you, without all of the dongles and other hardships that sometimes come with the territory.

 My guess is that many of you will say no. Others, who are on the never-ending quest to look good for all of those Zoom meetings, might have a list of questions in need of some really convincing answers, and rightfully so. Like, why pay this much when there are so many other more economical options, including using your phone as a webcam? And why go with newcomer Opal over legacy brands like Logitech?

 Compared to my MacBook Pro’s built-in microphone, my voice is just as clear, but through the C1 it has a little more resonance and depth to it. When I was recording a sample, some home construction next door started, and while its noise cancellation effects weren’t great, it was capable of picking my voice out from all of the noise.
