Elgato Facecam, you will think you're in a studio. That thing is pretty expensive so I don't recommend it to non-professionals but it's badass for those who always demand the best quality.

I got a Macbook Air back in 2019 and the camera quality on the thing is just awful. I've been using the webcam from my desktop when I have to use the mac for video chatting, but I was wondering if it's possible/worthwhile to upgrade the camera hardware itself. Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Is it possible to upgrade the camera in a Macbook Air?

 With the new software update from Elgato, the flickering green lines issue seems to have been fixed. This is a good webcam choice from the ones I’ve tried at a reasonable price point. If you are thinking about doing anything streaming related with OBS and this webcam, would highly recommend getting a Windows PC. Soo many issues trying to use a Mac, which all seemed to go away when I tried the same workflow on a PC, and the CPU usage was dramatically better on PC

97 and got much better results.  Thinking about keeping this Facecam now. It’s easier and more convenient to set up than a DSLR camera as a webcam.  Update: it’s been 4 months now and I decided to keep the Facecam

I might return this and get an old unlocked iPhone on eBay and try to use that as a dedicated webcam instead. It would be nice if Apple put iPhone cameras in MacBooks.  Update: used a different usb c to usb c cable plugged directly into laptop and got the same flickering green lines when recording in OBS on the MacBook Air 2020

 Also night quality is slightly grainy but good enough than other versions of face cams that I own!

 This is a microphone test of the Logitech C615 webcam, this is the kind of audio you can expect. When we sat naturally at our desk with our ring light on, you can see that we are looking overexposed on our face, with it looking quite washed out. Unticking the exposure setting in OBS, and playing around with the slider, and we were able to get a much better image. We did notice that if we turn on a light behind us, then there's an erratic change with the colour on our face, but you can manually set the white balance to prevent this from happening

 Beginning with using a ring light on our self, and it doesn't look bad, the movement looks good, and it looks as though we are getting the full 30 frames per second. We do look a little overexposed when we get close to the lens, but we are currently using the default settings, so I imagine we can get a better result if we manually change this. The colours are looking natural too, using natural light coming in through the window, and we do lose some quality. The movement still looks decent, but it is a lot more juddery than what we were getting with the ring light

We do look slightly out of focus too, and the autofocus does try and refocus occasionally, but never quite getting us back into focus. And if you do use this in a dark environment, then you can expect a lot more judder to the image, and a lot of grain too, so it will be usable, but as with all cameras, it's best to have some lighting on yourself

Logitech C615 Webcam Footage Review

 Now this little area that folds down right here is actually where you can mount it to a monitor or a laptop. So as you can see it has a very big piece of rubber right here that'll add some grip. Then it has a very large section to actually fit the monitor and then more rubber on this lip. And just for an example here I have a Chromebook

 So I'll have links to both of these in the description below. Alright so now all the video you're seeing and the audio you're hearing is coming from the Logitech C615. Now this is what I would consider low light so it may look a little grainy there may be some motion blur when I move. Now when I turn on my lights you can kind of see that the quality goes up it's a little bit less grainy and you can see what that full 1080p looks like

 Alright so in this review we'll be going over first the design and the build of this, how easy it is to mount this on a laptop or a Chromebook, something like that. Then I'll show you how to set it up and use your computer. And then we'll finish up with a video test and a microphone test as well as a quick video comparison with the Logitech C920 which is another HD camera from them around the same price. Alright so the Logitech C615 actually has a pretty unique design when it comes to webcams

 So if that was something you're interested in you could pick up a very large area with this camera. Alright and so now we have a quick comparison we have the C615 on the left and then the Logitech C920 on the right. Now as you can see the video quality is pretty similar I would say the C920 might be a little bit more high quality but to me the colors and the skin tones come through more realistically on the C615 so it's really going to be up to your preference there. One thing to keep in mind with that the C920 is going to be probably about 20 to 30 percent more expensive than the C615 so that's just up to your budget as well

 It too gave me an error message that my OS is not compatible with it.  So, I decided to try letting windows load its own drivers, and then re-install the Logitech garbage using the LWS 280 installer. The Windows drivers indeed got me sound, because I was able to test the microphone using Windows Sound Recorder, but when I loaded the Logitech software, it would not even let me select to create a video. When I went to video options, it acted as if I was crazy when I attempted to set the resolution to 1080P

 I then went back to Logitech's web site and researched the camera and the available software thoroughly. The recommended program does not say that it supports Windows 8 64 bit. There is a grid, and in the grid, two of the three programs recommended for this item support windows 8 64 bit, but not the one that their auto-detect recommended. This is just too much hassle, but I am learning that you get a lot of bull from Logitech these days

 Logitech misinforms you on every page of their web site. Only if you ignore the idiots at Logitech will you get this camera working in Windows 8 64-bit.  I will attempt to install Skype next, and then I will try turning on some additional lighting before I decide that the whole camera is just a rip off, but if the clarity does not improve, then this item will likely be going back. It may have higher resolution capabilities, but as for practical use of this item, it does not even compare with the OEM Asus HD webcam in mine and my son's laptops

 When Windows finished loading the drivers I tested the microphone again using the Sound Recorder program, and I had sound again. I then loaded the Logitech software and it allowed me to record a video, and it even had sound.  So, in summary, I did get the video camera to work, apparently (although I have yet to install Skype and test it in Skype). There is just no excuse for this kind of run around

I have to say though, it is incredibly disappointing to see a company you've trusted and appreciated, and basically loved for so long putting 3' cords on these stupid things just to save money.  This was a problem for me, since my chair is black, so it seemed like no matter how I tried to use this camera, it didn't quite produce the best quality image.  That said, I'm giving it four stars because as a consumer product, without having to worry about production values and similar, it is a good webcam. If you're not going to rely on it for web content, it will do the job and work for you for a long time. It does record in native 1080p, even if not with the best picture quality

Good consumer product, falls down for content creation

My son needed a video camera for his online class and he ordered this one since the ratio size was 1080p. He ordered one prior from Walmart that was 1440p and the video was too wide it showcased my entire apt. We just needed a camera that would focus mainly on the user and not the entire house. So, this Logitech HD Laptop Webcam C615 video camera in 1080p worked perfect for our needs

  We'll see how long it lasts, as that's the only thing left to really tests, but time will tell on that front. For now, it's doing its job.

 It even did very well in my room where I am typically backlit; the other built-in webcams I've used require me to have a light on my face and the light behind me turned off, but this one managed just fine, which I appreciated!  I also received good feedback on the audio quality, so no issues on that end either.  The webcam doesn't have a clip to attach to the monitor so I ended up using a command strip, and this thing will be unplugged while not in use as it also does not have a privacy cover.  We'll see how long it lasts, as that's the only thing left to really tests, but time will tell on that front. For now, it's doing its job
